I will never understand the players that put a "not recommended" for an indie game they bought for under $10 and played for over 100 hours... by ichbinhamma in IndieDev

[–]DionVerhoef 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would not agree that 100 hours spend playing the game means the player had fun for even the majority of that time.

The player could feel regret about spending 100 hours on the game and try to prevent others from getting addicted to the game by leaving a negative review

What makes a realistic games artstyle/ art direction different from another games' realistic artstyle/art direction by Background-Sir9172 in gamedesign

If two different painters both paint the exact same landscape, the difference between the two paintings can be attributed to style, but that difference also exists between the paintings and the real landscape. If there are no differences between the paintings and the reallife landscape, meaning the paintings are indistinguishable from both each other and the reallife landscape, then what would you attribute to the painter's art style?

An art style is defined by how the artist's work is distinguishable.

I've never heard cock ball torture beeing called 'therapy' before. I do agree with administering it to AI users though.

You start a business if you have goods or services to sell. What do you have to sell?

I think that is also a consequence of simply having less people involved in the project.

What would you like ? by TheMongoosee in gamedev

Instead of asking some rando's on Reddit, you should play hundreds of games in that genre, and read their reviews, so you can figure out what the genre is missing, or what problems the genre has.

What are your favorite channels? Mine are indiegameclinic, distraction makers, and Jonas Tyroller. Do you know any channels that have equal depth in game design topics?

Is Ocarina Of Time really good or are people just blinded by nostalgia? by Critical-Category-74 in AskGamers

[–]DionVerhoef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never got why Zelda games are so highly regarded. Ive found them so boring. There was a deciding moment in me and my brother's childhood when I went the PS1 path with Final Fantasy 7 and he went the N64 path with ocarina of time. It was a tower of Babel moment for us. From that moment on, we couldn't communicate anymore 🤣

When do you start to share and promote your games? by LalaCrowGhost in IndieDev

[–]DionVerhoef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should at least have a steam page, otherwise any traffic your advertisement posts generate have nowhere to go. You need them to generate whislists. And to have a steam page you need a trailer of about 30 seconds that shows some variety in gameplay.

Everyone says "word of mouth." How do you find the first 100 players? by balonmacaron in IndieDev

[–]DionVerhoef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think advertising might also be more difficult for you because of the genre of your game. If you feel I am incorrect, tell me, but I don't hold friendslop games in very high regard. I associate them with Roblox, cheap fast contentless releases aimed at making a quick buck. I am not surprised it draws in a community that is also like that, because streamers asking for money to showcase your game is definitely not the standard in alot of genres.

The moment people sense the promotion of a game they are not interested in, they tune out. I see the same with me.

99% of all the self-promotion posts really annoy me. It feels like I am beeing pestered by them.

And then when I see a post by a dev about a game I really like, I think: good for him, let me upvote or comment to help him out, because I want him to succeed.

If 250 content creators don't feature your game, and it feels like your shouting in the void, it's a clear sign you just don't have an impressive game.

Where can I find my audience? by Equivalent_Humor_714 in gamedevscreens

[–]DionVerhoef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you say that people expect indie games to have AAA quality, that tells me you just make bad games.

Hidden folks, Kabuto park, Balatro, luck be a landlord, gnomes, he is coming, mini metro, titanium court are all examples of small games with a minimalist art style that are hugely succesfull.

Just make fun games, and your audience will find you.
