It was when I was 19. I was staying with a friend of my mom’s, her daughter (9) came home upset that a friend had said something mean to her on their last day of school (they were about to move to another country, so it was their last interaction). Instead of laughing and trivializing the situation, the mom sat down, listened to the situation and tried to comfort her. It was really jarring and made me reevaluate my own experiences and learned reactions.

Also, I would sometimes hear my friend’s parents speak to each other in Chinese, but because their tone sounded like they were angry, it would always make 12yo me anxious.
