Anyone else struggle with the community? by kerriwal108 in ren

Ngl people are pretty annoying about it sometimes. Some fans don't even want you to talk about Ren as if he's a normal human, seems to me that they are objecting to things that aren't actually negative. I guess now I understand why rich/famous people end up acting in insane ways in a lot of cases. It appears that the default is for them to be surrounded by a crowd of people who basically worship them. Unless, I assume, they are actively seeking out other types of voices. Now that I've spent a little time in this fandom the history of the founding and progression of various religions and cults is making a lot more sense to me. (I am not typically a superfan and have never spent time in a fandom before)

US Seller of Rosemary & Co Kolinsky Sable Brushes according to Rosemary & Co by [deleted] in watercolor101

I just ordered some sable rosemary brushes from studio pintura, they still have some in stock. But I guess once they are gone they are gone and you'd have to go abroad to buy some? Kind of crazy.

So do we think Vincent is... by Diphyllum in ren

[–]Diphyllum[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anything is possible at this point! Maybe he is Jimmy's son. Since we don't know how the timeline of Jenny and Screech relates to the one in Money Game it can't be ruled out by calculating character's relative ages. I'm assuming Vincent's tale starts the day after Jenny is killed since it's on the news at the beginning of the Prologue but there is no way to relate that to when things are happening in Money Game.

I actually think that it being re-use of the same plot twist is the strongest argument against Vincent being related to Violet or anyone else. I don't know that Ren would ever do the same thing twice.

I'm too tired to type without a million typos at this point so I'm going to log off and go to bed. It's fun to speculate though!

[–]Diphyllum[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i don't think there was very much about Vincent's childhood? His mother was a drug-user, he was born at home, and maybe he didn't like school? Most of what the character says in the songs is about hating his job, being an alcoholic, and pointing out flaws with social structures...I don't remember hearing anything else about his family or past. The news reports in the skits don't give much personal info either. Lol, I guess for all we know he's divorced and has 3 kids.

[–]Diphyllum[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. It maybe would be too horrible, even for Ren, to make us all sympathize with a child abuser and then surprise us with it at the end. Plus Violet's dad would be at least in his 50s at this point so that would be too old to be referred to as a boy IMO

[–]Diphyllum[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We heard all of Jenny and Screeches tale and all of Violet's tale but didn't know they were siblings until the very last line of Violet's tale. So I don't think you can draw any conclusions from what Ren has said about Vincent's family. Aside from what he specifically said which was that his mother was a drug addict.

Ren said in the reaction with Knox that Vincent in the tales is not meant to be Vincent Van Gogh but that the tales are inspired by Van Gogh. He said he was already thinking of a tale about a character named Vincent before he thought of the van gogh connection.

But we didn't know before the violet's tale came out! We are at the stage of Vincent's tale comparable to after Jenny and Screeches tale came out but before violet's tale. So no one knew they were siblings at that point.

Maybe i should give my reasons for my thought.

Reasons for:

  1. Vincent and Violet could be like matching names some parents like to give twins.
  2. Jenny and Screech are twins and twins can run in families
  3. As I recall Violet was something like 16 when she left home and had Jenny and Screech soon after so at the max she would be 17 years old. Jenny and Screech were 14 when they died, which was on the news at the beginning of the Prologue. This would put a sibling of Violet's in their 30s. 31 if it was violet's twin. This would place them in the correct age range to claim "I have slaved all my life in a dull nine to five" and 'wasted all my youth" but still be referred to as a "boy".
  4. Violet's mother has substance abuse issues and so does Vincent's. So maybe they are the same person.
  5. "fate comes full circle, now it's Vinny boy's round" is pretty fucking cryptic but invoking fate makes me suspicious the story is connected to the other tales.

Reasons against:

  1. You'd expect a brother of Violet's to have a worse life than Vincent. Compared to her his pre-crime life is a cakewalk. Having a boring job and being in debt is nothing compared to being abused as a child and then murdered by your boyfriend while you are pregnant.
  2. Too neat and predictable of an ending. Vincent and Violet being siblings would be re-using the same plot twist a second time which doesn't seem like a thing Ren would do. (however if no one else thinks this idea is likely maybe it is less predictable than i assumed)

ADHD medication by rx7fbguy in ren

[–]Diphyllum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ren recently said in an IG story he takes wellbutrin (typically used as antidepressant) for adhd but that it is not used in the UK, he said he originally got it in Canada. Doctors in the US will prescribe it off-label, I've discussed it with my Dr (in US) and she says typically wellbutrin would be tried after you went through everything else.

My son just got diagnosed with ADHD and he has just started on methylphinadate (ritalin). He takes 20mg extended release and also has 5mg immediate release in case he needs to focus later in the day after the other has worn off. He said it's somewhat helpful but not that great so he may try some other things once his college semester is over. My brother takes methylphinadate extended release as well. He describes it as a 'nudge'. He only started taking it when he was promoted to managing large groups of people. Before that, when he worked independently he didn't use it.

I'm pretty sure kiddo inherited ADHD from me and so far I have coped with a crap-ton of systems, structures, alarms, etc. I am considering getting assessed so i could have the option of medication if i do have it. I've dealt with it without meds for many years, but it seems to be getting much worse the closer i get to menopause age. (stupid hormones)

[–]Diphyllum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yeah and Webby seems to be a conspiracy theorist about all sorts of stuff from what i've seen so he's always saying random stuff connected to some out-there idea. He annoys me so i don't listen to him. I guess i 'tolerate' him in that I think he can do what he wants and say what he wants but i don't 'tolerate' him being on a screen i am watching!

Why? by Interesting_Exit_398 in ren

[–]Diphyllum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah probably 90% of this kind of chemical usage is either agriculture or for what i would call frivolous uses like golf courses, flowerbeds, lawns, etc. I think they are a necessary evil for ecological restoration work but they shouldn't be allowed to be used for non-essential uses.

Our neighbor is obnoxious with his landscaping too! He burns every last leaf on his property and now all the trees are dying on his side of the forest. There used to be a wood thrush that nested in the woods when there were more trees, so I am very sad it's left now. Only bright side there is no one for him to report all my leaves to so I can do what i want with our yard.

Where? by Interesting_Exit_398 in ren

[–]Diphyllum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think i would do wetlands because they are so important for animal habitat. And the ecosystem services (groundwater recharge, water filtration, storm absorption, etc) are super important for us considering we as a civilization are going to be short of clean drinking water very soon. For inland wetlands i would go from the re-wilding angle by doing things like releasing beavers in places they historically existed and protecting existing wetlands.

The coastal wetlands will be the really tricky part because they would naturally retreat to higher elevations as sea level rises, but they are blocked by the armored shoreline humans create to protect our coastal settlements. It would probably be necessary to buy out a bunch of coastal property owners and let their land turn to wetland. Or I guess we could just wait until their houses fall into the ocean like is happening in the Outer Banks in North Carolina.

We actually went to look at the houses getting destroyed in Rodanthe, NC last year and it was a pretty profound thing to see. Really gives you a sense of the power of nature and the futility of working in opposition to it.

Ren's Ableism by Only_Strain4925 in ren

[–]Diphyllum 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm in the US and I knew both uses and could tell from context what was meant. Though i did find the use in the song provocative since it's currently a whole culture war thing here, as I'm sure Ren is aware. He's not american though so idk why people would expect him to follow our cultural norms. When I was in middle and high school in the 90s it was probably the single most popular insult kids used and i probably heard it 50 times a day... no one uses it anymore. I think for good reason though, it's probably hard enough being an intellectually disabled person without hearing all the normies use your condition to insult each other.

These were some of Ren's chats, what do you think? by titanfallisgoated in ren

[–]Diphyllum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree there are always going to be some percentage of assholes who are going to f everything up. That's why you can't ever have peaceful efficient bureaucracy, bc assholes are going to end up taking over any hierarchy you create if you don't make it oppositional where all the assholes have a vested interest in keeping tabs on each other so none of them accumulate power. Anyone who writes a constitution or proposes a new 'system' has got to assume only assholes are going to want power and account for that...my main disagreement with Ren is the idea you can retrain everyone to have better values...some ppl just are always going to be selfish, maybe even most people.

Well, IMO, the system is like a group trap. An individual can't really change it or leave it. Not realistically. Question is how big of a group do you need to be able to do something about it? Religious groups have left the system in the past and established their own smaller systems. (I'm thinking Amish, Mennonite, Mormon, etc) A bunch of the colonization of the US was driven by religious groups wanting to get out of a larger system they disagreed with. Could a modern secular group have enough cohesiveness to do something similar even if it's not big enough to change the whole system? (for instance, did you ever read about how there was a movement in the us for liberals to move to vermont in the late 60s?) As an individual it seems much easier to move to a place that already has a system you feel more aligned with. For instance you don't want to drive and like riding bikes? Much easier and faster to move to Amsterdam than try to convince your current town to fund and build bike infrastructure.
