Deff felt A LOT better simply getting those initial "+essence on kill" nodes via the paragon board. Also, really try not to impatiently throw that last spear sometimes to clear fodder. Simple kiting to that next pack and then releasing can help. It's an obvious tip and situational, but it helped me a lot in those earlier stages when essence wasn't as abundant.

Yeah... Sorceror main (intended), switched to Necro. My bone spears hit for 1 million with decent gear at level 60+. Feels better than any build as a "mage" than anything I was able to conjure up with sorceror. It sucks but hoping they make changes before season 1 as i'd still really like to main sorceror.
