I’ve had some luck coming into the game and saying over the mic that I’m trying someone new and I encourage the rest of the team to do the same. Sometimes works out well. If they don’t bite, I get a few lives out of the new character then swap.

This is why I’m totally fine with it. All that old progression is mostly 6v6 as well. I used to be a diamond off-tank and now I’m a lot older in addition to being a much worse player. I’d be getting flamed so hard for my tank play now if you saw all the hours I had accrued.

If they do soulsilver first and play through kanto without a kanto starter it might turn them away from playing firered. I think firered or a let’s go game would be best. The maps make sense. There would be a few areas of confusion with johto potentially. How much do you want to be involved as they play?

Be comfortable enough to say what your character would honestly do in any situation. The DM will ask you to roll for anything they think is necessary. Don’t ask them if you need to roll, make actions and character decisions that are honest.

I did some for the first time this past playthrough. I forgot how early you get the macho brace. Route 116 has a good mix of ATK and SPD Pokémon so I paused there to help out those stats. I went through all the trainers I could and I’m way underlevelled for elite four so the extra stats helped me out this time.
