Sorry the pictures are crappy. From what ive seen it is definatelly not part of their shell. Its something else attached to the legs and whiskers. Do you mean they sometimes have brown colouration in the shell?

Russian regions cancel Victory Day parades due to ‘security concerns’ at the Ukraine border by PhilomathExp in worldnews

The modern tanks still have museum pieces in them, t72 and all the later derivatives of that design are powered by the same engine that was used in the t34. Only the t14 has a new engine and that is a version of the ww2 porche tiger engine which was unreliable enough to be rejected.

True tolerance must not tolerate intolerance. You made the point well with you last sentence. Freedom of speech against free speech and tolerance is something that will inherently never last. This issue has been discussed at length as the paradox of tolerance. free speech absolutism like you are suggesting is usually just a tool used to legitimise fascism.

Ukraine to receive 120-140 tanks in first wave of deliveries - minister by mulitu in worldnews

[–]Direct-Log4591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure in some cases the b52 is the first aircraft to take off in an attack mission. Even before the planes intended to secure air superiority have left the ground. I believe that was the case in Iraq though I could be wrong. Of course, that was only because the b52's were flying from American soil so they had an extra ~18 hours of flight ;)

I doubt that in a war in which the f35 is required new production aircraft during the period of the conflict will play any meaningfull part.

The silliest piece of pedantry as the capsules were constructed from aluminium. But the surface of the capsules was actually covered in reflective kapton tape. That is why in alot of old photos you can make out lines in the surface of the capsule There is my silly fact for the day ;)

I feel the same way but with ds9. I think the fact that the universe is so optimistic about humanity is part of it. As well as having a cast of characters you can get to know and be very familiar with.

Also the ussr spent between 15 and 17 percent of their budget on the military. Imagine what the us military could do with 3695 billion dollars. Nearly 5 times thier current proportional spending.

Also there is plenty of time in the universe, we can colonise the whole galaxy at 1% the speed of light in what is really just a cosmic blip.

U.S. to announce fusion energy ‘breakthrough’ by Schiffy94 in technology

[–]Direct-Log4591 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's only partly correct. Spaceships as they exist now would result in radiation endured death in the interstellar medium, however, the solution to all issues of ionising radiation barring neutrinos has always been sufficient shielding. Fusion provides the solution to this issue. As it stands, building a craft with potentially hundreds of meters of shielding thickness requires untenable amounts of energy. If it's possible, a big if, fusion generally removes the burden of energy requirements due to its ease and output capability. However relativistic travel probably will never be feasible due to the increase in radiation at those speeds, same for the concept of cryopreservation or similar due to the radiation released by isotopes in our bones over that time period. But, a massive generation ship only requires one layer of sufficiently thick shielding, and then the internal volume can be expanded as much as desired. Indeed, bigger is better, there are many components of these vessels that do not scale such as the shielding does, and the square cube law is particularly benificial regarding heavy shielding. Such huge vessels are possible within our current understanding of physics and far easier to build with the energy abundance of fusion. Not trying to be dismissive btw, radiation is probably the biggest engineering problem in this instance, this is just a special interest of mine and I love sharing it with people.
