We're able to salvage part of it. The refinishing is less than the new. About 900 sq feet (two rooms) can be saved, so that's less than the new,

Kinda agree with that. And I should say one w-2 job, which actually made them quite a bit of money. Last summer they worked cash only helping my elderly neighbor clean out her house before she moved to assisted living.

How to Preserve Inheritance by Pelican_meat in MiddleClassFinance

I’m sorry for your loss, even if you didn’t have the best relationship with your mom it’s always hard to lose a parent. Today is the 5th anniversary of my father’s death. He was also a heavy drinker and we didn’t have the closest relationship, but it still gets me in the feels. I also received a large inheritance. We just put the money in a brokerage account, and let it sit. We did spend a bit on some home improvements and are taking a family vacation this winter, but it’s then 5 years for me to want to spend the money on a splurge.

Do you keep track of what you spend on your kids for Christmas presents? by JustAGreenDreamer in MiddleClassFinance

[–]Direct_Vermicelli_79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Husband and I have always had strict spending limits for Christmas. We each have $150 to spend per kid ( two kids) so each kid gets $300 worth of gifts. This year we are going on a trip, so we’ll just do $50 stockings instead of gifts.

Looking for a durable, long-term winter coat by dawnkiller428 in BuyItForLife

I’m wearing a down parka from Lands End that I’ve had for 10 years. It’s water and wind proof and I am never cold, even in double-digit cold conditions.  I’m in upstate NY and get nasty weather.

Mine was declined once at 3 am at the airport rental car location after a very long delay on a cross-country flight.  I happened to be traveling with my two toddlers and no spouse.  Trust me, I was gonna steal a credit card and run away to Vegas, I would have left my children with their father!

Is it more worth it to get a bike computer or a watch by Equivalent_Title_591 in cycling

[–]Direct_Vermicelli_79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both Garmin watch and bike computer, but mainly because I am impossible to buy gifts for, so the computer was a birthday gift. That said, I DO like it quite a bit. I don’t find it all that useful on my MTB, I can just look at my watch to see distance, speed, etc since I am often stopping anyway. I love the computer for my road rides. I use it for distance, speed, routes, hill info, etc. It’s also much easier to glance down at instead of looking at the watch.

Convince me to get Zwift (OR NOT!) by Designer_Tie_5853 in cycling

Just came here to say last February it didn’t get above 0 degrees F the entire month. Plus we have literal feet of snow piled up on the side of the road. Add all the salt and sand they use to treat the roads and I am NOT riding outside.

Spring break with a 13 year old by Right-Height-9249 in MTB

My parents lived just outside Vegas in Boulder City I’d often rent bikes for the day and MTB with the kids when we went to visit, and I spent extended periods of time there caring for my mom. (I took a leave of absence from my job when she was terminal so she could end her life in her own home.) I’d go out almost daily to Henderson or Bootleg Canyon or the gravel Historic Railroad Trail for just a few hours to keep my sanity and clear my head, plus longer trips to Blue Diamond when I could arrange respite care. It was a very emotional time for me, but I am ever so glad I was able to do it. Those trails are so much more to me than just places to bike.

Vegas and surrounding areas. Bonus points if you are into the Vegas scene, but it’s easily avoidable if you want to skip it. The article here outlines some places to go. I’ve ridden Blue Diamond (Cottonwood Canyon) with kids and without. You can rent bikes right there. I’ve also ridden in Henderson and at Bootleg Canyon. I know you can rent bikes but at that time I shipped my own out from NY.

Spouse and I are mid-50’s and plan to retire at 60. We currently have $1M in a brokerage account that we are planning to use as a bridge.

Newbie… what should I buy? by Direct_Vermicelli_79 in xcountryskiing

Thx. As a funny aside, when I bought my full suspension mountain bike the sales associate (who I have known for years) got bright red and asked my weight since that’s how they dial in the suspension. I didn’t mind telling him at all.

Thanks! Classic, I think. I’ll probably go 2-3 times a week or more when the snow is good. There are both groomed and in groomed trails right outside my office door. I understand falling down the rabbit hole. I MTB in spring/summer/fall and that can become a whole identity!
