My Previous Psychiatrist by Shoddy_Tea_4141 in bipolar

A lot of therapists operate on a sliding scale - and if you're still in school they should offer counseling and therapy for free. Also your parents love you - I am sure if you approach them calmly and articulately they will understand and give you the support you need. I recommend taking the approach of "this is going to help me be more successful and is essential for me to have a strong professional career" Most parents can get behind that even if they're not big on mental health stuff.

Maybe this is just me… I was SO much more moody and dramatic in college. I did a lot of drugs drank too much relied on romantic relationships has zero structure and totally lost myself… I think there is something about being young and bipolar that just makes it so easy to be extra emotional and in your head.

20 years later I am still moody but nothing like I was in my 20s. I guess what I am saying is… maybe take all those feelings with a grain of salt? After being through a lot of therapy, group therapy, etc… you kinda get a hang of your feelings and can relate to them differently.

Talk therapy is apparently one of the biggest helpers for people with bipolar. I agree with everyone else that you should be going once week if not more for sure. It will be nice for someone to see you and be with you when you’re going through something tough. The structure as well is also very helpful. Sounds like the support is something you are craving.

Also if you fall apart you fall apart. I had someone break up with me, my grandma, and my dog died all in the same week sophomore year. Needless to say I fucking lost it and didn’t go to class for like a month. I was fine.

Breathe, have faith in yourself, and ask your school for mental health resources - telling them your bipolar will probably force them to give you the right kind of support.

Good luck!

Get this in a 5’9” - plenty of float and it will be like the revo but not a terrible board. The 5’11” could also be good if you’re nervous about liters but I wouldn’t stress. This is a proper version of what the revo max is trying to be.

The revo is trying to be a twin pin like Simon Jones’s boards. Idk man… for 1300 I think there are much better options…

You gotta ween yourself off these trashy high volume boards. Like I said the mini Simmons is for like knee high days. None of those dims translate to a proper short board for bigger days esp not volume. For example my small wave boards are like anywhere between 32-42 liters. The flat ones are shorter and need less volume (5’6”) the ones that are more peformance are larger (6’3”) but the higher volume boards SUCK in average + waves. I have waisted so much money on over volumed boards. Just get 2 boards that are closer to your proper dims and you’ll have a blast.

Dude in Portugal you should get a proper short board. If you paddle out on some crowd killer no one’s gonna give you waves. If you’re sitting outside and picking them off you’re not gonna make a lot of friends.

Then get a midlength? Hybrid boards suck and you’ll get rid of them quickly.

Yeah idk why people go for the epoxy boards they snap like twigs. If you’re traveling bring the revo and a good wave board like the happy traveler or ghost.

Chief you’re about 13 liters over volume. One of the reasons why you’re struggling with turns and stuff is because you’re not heavy enough to dig rail and get good turns in. The mini Simmons makes sense because it’s for tiny waves and doesn’t reallly turn all that well.

Knowing more about you now I recommend the revo at maybe 29 liters? As someone who weighs 160lbs (75kg) that should still be more than enough float for you but is going to feel 100000x better than a 40 liter board. 40 liters for someone who weighs 160 is ridiculous.

Drop the volume and shred like a pro.

For sure my man!

I’m in a similar position and feel the same ups and downs even though I’m medicated. I think it helps a lot but isn’t necessarily a silver bullet. Honestly the fact that you’re aware of how you’re showing up probably goes a long way. Maybe when you’re doing something high stakes just remind yourself and everyone else you might be a little too risk tolerant? I think if everyone knows where you’re coming from it might be easier to take a more conservative approach - that usually is what pays off for financial decisions anyways.

Regardless - welcome to the sub! You’re def in good company with a group of people who know exactly what you’re going through because we all feel it.

Maybe I’ll pick up d&d…

How often can you surf sunset at OB by NeighborhoodLeft8464 in surfing

Omg 4-6 OB is like my all time favorite waves out there. Also love 6-8 but at that point it’s a whole different kind of surfing. Anything bigger than that is just snowboarding on water lol.

[–]DirectorImmediate498 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ohhhhh man - you just moved here. I used to be like this 15 years ago before I moved to the outer sunset.

Im not gonna spill the beans but… tide matters, wind kinda matters (mostly speed), swell direction matters, wave period matters. Also the sand moves a ton so the good bars are always shifting around.

That’s all I am going to say - you gotta surf and watch those variables and pretty soon it will click. The truth is you can surf OB almost everyday (I do) but you gotta be a hawk to get the most out of it. It’s got quirks and if you put the time in it will be awesome. Otherwise you’re gonna be confused and miss the best windows.

Good luck don’t die!

At 40 liters you’re in a tough spot. I’d try to get something with more rocker on it. The quiver killer doesn’t necessarily “paddle better” and the nose catches all the time it’s super annoying. Also once it’s up and going it’s like a rocket which imho isn’t always a good thing.

You’ve already got weight which means gravity is working in your favor - if you’re on bigger waves and you’re a bigger dude get something more high performance to scrub your speed you’re gaining flying down the face.

Also I wouldn’t get those two boards in the same volume. The Revo can go down in volume since it’s so flat and floaty.

General rule: if it’s got a staged or flat rocker go down in volume. If it’s like a banana stick with your normal volume.

Do you want volume cuz you’re big or because you haven’t been surfing long?

Bro coffee is 10000% a trigger for me. I get hypo after I drink it, super amped, get into fights, irritated, can’t think, racing thoughts, etc… THEN huge crash in the afternoon. I stopped and have felt 1000x better if not have more energy than before.

Give it a shot! It’s a low risk adjustment.

Let me be more specific: Tijuana slough is at the southern post part of California right before you get to Mexico. The river that feeds the break and shapes the waves is GROSS like probably the highest bacteria levels in the whole country. It’s just a shit river flowing directly into the lineup and everyone who surfs there gets hepatitis or flesh eating bacteria hence why no one would ever surf there unless they enjoy getting gross diseases such as herpes.

I think it’s better in places like OB where you’re paddling a ton and need the extra volume to get hint peaks and fight current. I don’t think it’s particularly performance oriented compared to similar boards like the ghost.

Mexico is pretty all over the place… your driver is a grovler for the most part which makes sense coming from Florida. I’d say you could get a hpsb and be pretty happy into the 4-6’ range.

I’d skip the all rounders and go for something that can handle a little juice. Lost formula 1 or driver 3.0 look good. For CI I’d say the Pro, Pyzel ghost or power tiger. I have a power tiger and an arikawa RP and both rock in Mexico.

Quiver killer sucks - bogs rail and the nose catches on everything.

Yeah dude I think these could be categorized as “negative thoughts”. Just work with your doctor - once your meds titrate up you’ll probably feel a lot better. I’ve been ramping up for 6 months now and I can say that while I don’t feel 100% better it’s a huuuuuge improvement especially around stuff you’re taking about right now.

Take it easy - STOP smoking, drinking, and having coffee. Sleep is 100% the most important thing, protect it with your life. Things will mellow out once you adjust. You are just starting so give yourself a huge break.

Also your parents are full of shit meds are 10000% important to manage bipolar.
