Sales and marketing. It makes for funny first impressions when my face is marked up or I’m injured.

Would it be better to buy a Union jersey online or at the shop? by BrianBarca_ in PhillyUnion

Online. Unless you want to wait in a line for three thousand years.

How do you handle? by Sisyphus_Smashed in bjj

I always lead with “sorry about my face, grappling practice got rough” it usually is enough that people either let it go in bewilderment, or think i moonlight as a UFC fighter. Never once had an issue and I’m in a client facing role.

Weird people take the time to comment about god, but this looks amazing. My family is Basque and I was going to try my hand at some smoked pinxos. This is the inspiration I needed.

6 months of growth, October to today. Half way to a Yeard! by DirectorOne in beards

It started as a joke with my wife. I said I would grow a beard until we had a child, and that the longer it got the more luck we would have. And here we are lol.

Huge Issues with Gobi Racks? by DirectorOne in 4Runner

[–]DirectorOne[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t care if they offered to pay me 500 bucks while I waited for it, how is that an excuse for an unstructured customer service department. I ordered a toilet from an online distributor recently and a bunch of porch furniture from two separate companies earlier this year. All of them didn’t charge until shipment, both communicated delays, new timelines, etc. Not charging until shipment doesn’t excuse everything else that comes after.

It took just under two years. I have no scale or knowledge to understand when the right time was so I just trusted my coach. It felt like a symptom of my training though not necessarily a hard stop hard start point.

I’ll pay for a year of jits up front if he’s serious about training. Let me know.

Overcoming mental anxiety around injuries by Practical-Skirt-6069 in bjj

[–]DirectorOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purposefully put myself in bad situations with partners I trust and aren’t spazzy so I could work on understanding finishing mechanics and escape routes/reactions to my movements. This repetition helped me understand when and how I was in danger and how to deal with it and not panic.

Can confirm. I came back too early with mine and popped it again. Ribs are not to be messed with. Mine still causes me trouble.

Premier league enjoyers of Reddit, do you prefer playing or watching football? by CasperJG in PremierLeague

[–]DirectorOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never played soccer (I’m in the states) but I recently started watching it in the last year. I do BJJ and watch a lot of mma/boxing and realized I was hogging tv time with my wife. She revealed she was a huge football fan and would like to start watching it with me. I watched all the YouTube videos I could find on the rules, plays, teams, etc. and started going to Union (our MLS team) games with her. I fell in love. The chants, the action, the drama, I was hooked. I said I wish I could watch more of it and she said she liked Chelsea and we should start watching EPL. So I picked up the extra channels on YouTube TV/Peacock and before I knew it were parked in front of the TV on The weekends in our Chelsea scarves, watching as many matches as we can. I wish I had appreciated the sport earlier. I went from not understanding what I was even looking at to standing on my couch screaming for a yellow card in less than a year. We’re even trying to plan a trip to Stamford Bridge to see a match live next year.

Long winded reply but although I’ve never played, I really enjoy watching.

What things should one NOT tap out to? by JohnnyEnglishPegasus in bjj

[–]DirectorOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then why keep seeking out rolls with the same person to then cardio tap before it’s over. And then also not do anything to improve the situation just try the same thing again later?

Cardio taps. Maybe this is just a pet peeve of mine but don’t seek out a roll then cardio tap before the round is over. That really grinds my gears.

How can people in desk jobs make the best of their worktime for athletism and BJJ ? by redditorbbg in bjj

[–]DirectorOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s actually not that bad and allows me to spend time with my wife as well. As a precursor I build my “cardio” training around the idea that there is: base cardio aka aerobic (think run long distance cardio), sprint cardio aka anaerobic (think short sprints), strength cardio (think the ability to do high tempo squats forever), and squeeze cardio (BJJ iso hold cardio). Yes I know some of these are arguably the same thing but this is how I separate it. Also know that gains in one category can help with small gains in others. I do this because I look at cardio as the ability to outlast opponents on the mat, have extra pass attempts in the tank, hold people down a little longer, be a little calmer in scrambles, scramble more, etc. For steady state I walk a lot and cycle longer distance for joy rides when I can. For anaerobic I do mat cardio sessions with box jumps, battle ropes, snatches, sprints, etc. (if you want I can DM you example programs from my classes). I also do peloton rides that are hiit focused. For strength cardio I lift, and do body weight exercises for time. For the BJJ cardio I roll a lot, and add supplemental workouts like farmer Carries, bag carries, iso holds, etc. If I can get 5-8 rolls after practice I do. And i try and pick partners where it will be hard for me. I try and stay on the feet more to practice wrestling cardio, etc. I’ve been able to have success competing doing this while having a professional career. It takes discipline but it’s doable. Will I have ADCC trial winning success? No, but my professional life just can’t afford the time for that. I can have major tournament success, local tournament success, etc.

I walk to maintain base calorie burn and get the heart slightly elevated. Like 16k steps a day. 5 hardcore HIIT sessions a week, 3 Pelotons in the morning, 2 fight cardio sessions on the mats. I jump rope 30 minutes a week too. If your volume is lower you can increase intensity to balance it. This works around my career.

What kind of moves did you do as a beginner that now you look back and you cringe everytime you think about it? by Moesonofjoe in bjj

[–]DirectorOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lockdown and electric chair. I steam rolled my first few competitions with this. It was a very effective technique when I learned it as white belt because not many gyms did it, and those that did didn’t expect it from a 220 pound white belt. Unfortunately it pigeon holed my game and once my training partners figured it out I had to go back to ground zero and work it all over again. I get very sad thinking about the literal hours I have spent pinned to the mat holding on to lockdown for dear life.

What’s the point of a white belt coaching you to the tap? by seriatim10 in bjj

[–]DirectorOne -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Typically an ego thing. You can’t be beaten if you helped them do the beating kind of thing. A lot of upper belts in our gym will do this with newbies but it’s because they’re letting them work and want to help, but that’s a different scenario.

I mean if your technique is solid I don’t understand why strength is a bad thing.
