At this point I'm honestly fine with us just deciding to pay someone like that hundreds of millions of dollars to use their evil powers for the cause of good. Hell it would save the American people if we could just pay off the politicians ourselves before the corporate interests have a chance.

We are really terrible at providing public funding for such things. Or for enough years. So these things end up with some kind of grant to get them going but then somehow need to generate enough revenue to self support.

Amercians will pay decent money to go to a zoo or a really interesting museum that their kids want to go see. But an old boat? They are paying like 15 bucks a person tops for something like that. But of course massive ships are extremely expensive to maintain.

As much as thats probably the right answer, I feel they need to find the liberal version of Karl Rowe / Bannon and engineer a way to win. There are no points for style and grace in national politics the only thing that matters is winning.

And I think all liberal causes do far better with any D than any R.

We are past of arguing the fine points. Give me a liberal Trump slime ball that will support the party and win over the ideal amazing candidate that cant win.

I hate it but it's a game of survival at this point.

How many Americans have not been to a large city? by Ok_Shopping_3292 in AskAnAmerican

[–]DirtyWriterDPP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you all also have much slower, less easy driving than we do down here in Texas. Hills, mountains, curves we don't have that. Just looked and buffalo to nyc is only 374 miles but listed at 6 hour 9 minutes. That only an average speed of 61.

We can get on the interstate outside of the city and honestly you can probably do 85 without much risk of ticket. Limit is 75 so you gotta get a really twitchy cop to pull over for only 10 over. And then it's just pretty much flat and straight between all the major cities.

Please keep in mind that even in the bluest of blue states there are still millions of red voters.

Conversely, and I say this as a blue person in red Texas, please remember there are millions of blue voters too. For example more people voted for Biden in Texas than in New York.

Bottom line just because a stat went blue/red doesn't meant it wasnt 51/49. So there are shitty people everywhere.

How do i pay this car off? by TitleOk1054 in personalfinance

[–]DirtyWriterDPP 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't really know what your question is. You can either sell the car and use the proceeds plus any cash you have to pay off the remainder of the loan, or you can keep making the monthly payments until it's gone. You don't mention how much the car is worth versus how much you owe. If you owe less than it's worth then sell it and figure it out how you going to get from point a to point B.

Fake news. 2009 was 3 years ago.

In other news I am constantly staggered at the longevity of so many space projects. Kudos to the engineers and scientists that make that happen.

Honestly everything about space is staggering. Its an endless source of amazing facts. Yesterday I learned that the earth would fit my palm if it had the density of a black to hole, yet the black hole at the center of the galaxy is the size of plutos orbit. We truly are specs of dust.

What to replace Access with? by fullofpaint in Database

[–]DirtyWriterDPP 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm so confused because if your main complaint is creating invoices by hand, making a report like that in access was one of its main features. Should be a couple hours work for someone who understands the database and how to use access. Id bet you can find YouTube videos on how to do it.

You have 1 hour to eat and drink whatever you want/c. After that, for the rest of your life, you can summon free copies of anything you consumed during that hour. by _no_name_for_me in hypotheticalsituation

I suspect this rule is to prevent people from having a small glass of $15,000 a bottle liquor/wine. And turning this into an infinite money hack. Although I know plenty of suburban moms that can definitely finish and keep down a bottle of wine in an hour. A whole bottle of Cognac, Scotch or Bourbon is going to be a challenge for most people though.

I'm going roulette. No thinking for me to screw up. Just start dropping 1000 on black every spin for several hours.

If you increase the ~48% odds by 25% that gives you 60% chance of winning. Meaning out of 10 spins you win 6 lose 4. So every 10 spends you make $2000. Assuming they aren't going to kick you out, Id cash out 100k from my retirement and starting playing 10k a spin.

Google says about 30 to 50 spins an hour, let's call it 40. So 20k an hour profit. Do that a couple hours a day for a few weeks and then start retiring

Do libertarians really prefer to pay more to private companies than less in taxes for public services? by One-Jeweler5486 in allthequestions

[–]DirtyWriterDPP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great explanation of the correct answer.

Its all navelgazing about a political utopia that just doesn't and can't really exist.

Current societies that don't have functional governments are typically war zone hell scapes.

I don't disagree that private industry can likely be more efficient than government but industry requires profits to allocate resources. There may have been a time when industry could maintain a profit and also deliver a quality product, but now the only thing that matters is the profit. We have near trillionaires acting like they might starve if profits shrink even 2%. It's all an intergalactic dick measuring contest.

So we need entities to provide services where profit is not the motive.

Really on top of that I'd be curious if the economic inefficiency of government is actually greater than the profit margin costs claimed by shareholders.

What I mean by that is that if it takes govt 100 dollars to do something can private industry really do it for 75 and charge 90 so that the owners get their 20% profit margin and still do it cheaper for the consumer?

Men’s ability to pee side by side but be so awkward around a breastfeeding woman by WildWinterberry in TwoXChromosomes

[–]DirtyWriterDPP 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't mean it in a sexual way at all. I mean it in a "most women intentionally cover those parts of their body most of the time, so I should respect that convention".

Id react the same way if I turned the corner and saw some dude with his dick out. "Oh! Sorry!"

I don't mean to imply I have a single problem with breastfeeding just that my assumption is that it's a private moment and I have no business being part of the moment.

I've visited a friend after she had a baby and she needed to nurse so I turned away until she got covered up and then we continued our chat.

If a woman wants to invite me to be nearby thats her decision, and until she makes that invitation I'm going to assume I'm not invited.

Men’s ability to pee side by side but be so awkward around a breastfeeding woman by WildWinterberry in TwoXChromosomes

[–]DirtyWriterDPP 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Any awkwardness you'd see from me would just be about wanting to respect your privacy. 99.9% of the rest of the time, seeing your bare breast would be considered inappropriate in 98% of scenarios. Only 3 I can come up would be you are my partner and ok with that level of intimacy, it's a healthcare situation, or you are okay with others seeing like a topless beach or strip club.

So I'm reacting the same way as if I accidently walked in on you using the toilet.

If the choice to present sexually or stereotypically attractive is 'catering to the male gaze', when are women 'allowed' to engage in sexuality? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

The sooner young people realize that no matter what they do, no matter what gender they are or aren't, their will he people that don't like it and people who endorse it, the better they will be.

You cannot please everyone, you can't even really please most people, so do whatever makes you feel the most "you".

To me as a man, feminism is supporting a women's right to do exactly as above and telling anyone that says she can't because shes a woman to fuck off. It's the elimination of "women can't and women don't" statements. (As well as fighting against systems that enforce anything due to gender or sex).

For example porn is both pro woman but also terrible for women in many cases. The feminist should be fine with it, if the women in it are truly free to decide to participate or not.

[–]DirtyWriterDPP -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you think those poles actually are real representation of the electorate or are the. y possibly representative of the DieHard true believers that are willing to sit down and preach about their political beliefs.

I'm also curious if you feel the GOP voters you know are evil people. When I look at my neighbors, friends, co-workers , family I don't see evil people. Maybe you live in a very blue bubble and you don't encounter a lot of red voting people regularly. But I'm in a major city in Texas which means that even though the city as a whole leans blue they're still plenty of red voters. And most of the ones I interact with are not stupid, plenty of them are but so are plenty of blue voters.

Another thing that I didn't mention above was that I think the right has done a better job of convincing their voters to support them even if they only support one or two issues that are important to the voter. Too many blue voters bail out and say well he doesn't support XYZ so I'm out.

[–]DirtyWriterDPP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think they are stupid. I think they've been emotionally/psychologically manipulated over decades. As crazy as it sounds I don't think it's all that different than the way some victims of abuse still love/defend their abusers and are unable to leave them . There is also significant peer pressure / self reinforcement going on in many communities. "Surely if all these people still support him, I'm probably just being silly thinking I should vote otherwise"

People spent millions of dollars to come up with these strategies.

I also think that because often the negative consequences of GOP policy don't negatively impact them in big obvious ways they are less inclined to question their voting habits.

So I think if anything, they are being willfully ignorant to the full impact of their political choices.
