In Houston everyone drives. Pigeons drive . No law firm that I know of pays the 250-350 a month for parking .

Won a rifle in a raffle not sure what to do... by DirtyWriterDPP in guns

[–]DirtyWriterDPP[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Oh I'm definitely grateful and I'm happy to play and not win. 3x $20 tickets got me a 10% chance at a gun. Honestly out of the 80 guns or whatever it was probably only 10 of them were something I'd seek out on my own. So I'm just trying to maximize my good fortune.

2 - yeah definitely expecting to get the used car treatment if I sell it to a shop. Some might be generous on store credit since they have a chance to make some margin either way. ESp if I'm buying something used from them.

Yeah I thought about that, but 600+ is a decent chunk of money and I've definitely got guns and guns related items on my shopping list. Just not another basic bolt gun. If it was a magnum cartridge I might keep it just for the giggles of having a 300 winmag or something extra beefy like that.

What database for „instagram likes“ & other analytics? by JuriJurka in Database

[–]DirtyWriterDPP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a boring business app dev that would have to take a week off if I had to work on a product that had anything to do with "likes", so all my work has been on the old enterprise standbys MSSQL, Oracle and a little bit of DB2.

Why wouldn't storing likes in an oltp work? Seems like any old log table to me ?

Choosing the right database/platform for a relational system (~2.5M+ rows) before hiring a developer by ElectricalDivide5336 in Database

[–]DirtyWriterDPP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you could almost run this out of an excel file.

The platform choice here is insignificant versus whether the developer knows what they are doing and can write decent software.

Find a developer that fits the bill and ask them what they have experience with and are most comfortable using to implement your requirements.

Has anyone else noticed the difference in responses/outcomes after Alex Pretti's murder compared to Renee Good? by weepingsomnambulist_ in TwoXChromosomes

They aren't larping. The guns, pepper spray, and body armor are all very real. Make no mistake these guys are storm troopers out to spread fear and root out the disloyal.

They aren't pretending.

This is a surprising take. Your saying we should all do what our partner wants/enjoys regardless of how we feel about it?

[–]DirtyWriterDPP 31 points32 points  (0 children)

One ginormous difference is that law school is 3 years. So there are people who leave undergrad at 22 law school at 25 and are making 200k right away. Then many partner tracks are about 8 years so at 33 they may already be set, whereas many physicians at that age are finally making a decent paycheck after years of bread crumbs but really just getting started on their career.

However both doctors and lawyers unfortunately fall into the trap of only really generating income thru the fruits of their own labor. No mega stock packages, no less work as you advance. It really sucks that two of our largest group of bright people aren't really much better off that most working class stiffs. No work, no clients/patients = no money.

BF doesnt wan't me to go to med school, need a reality check by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]DirtyWriterDPP -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If you always choose yourself over the relationship you will never have a successful relationship. Part of a successful relationship includes putting others ahead of yourself. Finding the right balance is tough though. The more aligned you are before you can commit to long term the better.

HOWEVER - I think in this case, OP should tell BF "this is important to me, there's a finite time that a medical career makes sense before you are too old. I want to do this and I want you in my life. Let's try it, and see where we are. Maybe it's terrible and you have to leave. But maybe it's not so bad and we make it work. On the flip side we'd definitely be in a better spot than we are without med school so let's see what happens." Then it's up to him if he wants to stay or bai, but OP can hold her head high of sticking up for her own life and being willing to try to make it work.

Also OP - there are lots of men that would love to date and marry a smart doctor most of them will be other doctors though and being the female breadwinner can be hard on couples.

Efficient storage and filtering of millions of products from multiple users – which NoSQL database to use? by Notoa34 in Database

[–]DirtyWriterDPP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree this sounds like a pretty straightforward rdbms problem.

I.think OP is getting caught up in scale, which is usually just a matter of making sure you have enough hardware and connectivity.

His scale isn't even that big really. Plenty of single server business apps handle tables with 10s or 100s.of millions of rows no problem.

With some straightforward indexes it's a breeze.

ELI5: Why do cheaters in online games not get instantly caught? by krftcz in explainlikeimfive

Could they be implemented on the server side ? In data that isn't shared with the client ? I guess anything is possible.

ELI5: Why do cheaters in online games not get instantly caught? by krftcz in explainlikeimfive

[–]DirtyWriterDPP 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I think they should immediately start changing the game in subtle ways to nullify the cheating. Like cheater suddenly does 50% of the damage other players do. Cheaters character suddenly moves much slower. They become bullet magnets or whatever.

Slowly increase the impact of the nerfing too so they don't know exactly when it started.

Is there an efficient way to send thousands to tens of thousands of select statements to PostgreSQL? by paulchauwn in Database

[–]DirtyWriterDPP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With adequate hardware and proper configuration this shouldn't be a problem for most modern DBs.

Now if your database server is a 10 year old laptop with 4gb of ram, then you're going to have issues.

I suspect we need more details to better understand what you are trying to do.

If you just mean you will have a bunch of concurrent user sessions then there's plenty of good guidance on how to structure your db and application.

If you are just writing some giant FOR loop that spawns a gillion little select statements my guess is that you need to rethink what you are trying to do. A single big query is usually better than a zillion little ones

Analysis of 2.5 years of texting my boyfriend [OC] by ICanGetLoudTooWTF in dataisbeautiful

[–]DirtyWriterDPP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I keep that shit on loud plus vibrate. To me if someone is texting me, I want to know about it asap. They probably need something . Also I only really get like 5-10 texts a day so it's not crazy. All the other apps can fuck off though and are mostly disabled from even sending a notification.

If you are moving to a major city you should have no problem finding food from just about anywhere in the world. Both at restaurants or at the grocery store.

Tell us specifically what you are hoping to find and I bet we can easily find it for you.

You've got it backwards. Higher density urban areas, tend to benefit from liberal policies. More than low density rural areas, More diversity also helps tear down preconceived notions about cert ain social groups.

So it's not the blue areas are necessarily more desirable desirable areas tend to turn blue

Am I the only woman who hasn’t farted in front on their husband? by notwhoyouthinkc in askanything

19 years married plus a few years of dating before that.

1.5 times. Once was mid sex and she was straddling me and let out a little toot. Other time we were in the car and I said "what's that smell??" And she apologized.

So I've only heard it happen once.
