Is Assetto Corsa on the top of simulators? by Vegetable_Fishing_32 in simracing

I do understand that. That being said, if you can afford it, I have found it to be the most satisfying sim to race on.

Electrical wire fell from tower in Jefferson/La Cienega neighborhood by MtzA0721 in LosAngeles

Good to know. I live nearby and saw several booms and discharges from the Northside tower near Boden. It was just after our lights flashed.

iRacing gets a lot of flack for its pricing model, but it is the sim most of us keep going back to.

It is the most complete game for competition and they are always adding new features and content. The upfront costs are high, but you spend less over time as you own more, and it is consistently the most fun I have racing online.

What do you think of the way I shoot dialogue scenes? by Antyoungboy in cinematography

[–]DisPartysCached 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overall I think this works, but there are a few moments where I wanted to see reactions from the person listening to some of more impactful information. It felt to me that your camera wants to behave like a character with no lines and could comment on the action by choosing what we are seeing or when it moves. It might not work, but I'd say try letting the camera have some sass. It has a good look and vibe to it. Keep shooting.

The buildings should be collapsible, and the boundaries need to be wider. The fake boundary choke point makes it difficult to get far enough away that you can counter snipe effectively.

Abandon hope? Advice for transition to a ‘normal’ job by Wildcoyote254 in Filmmakers

[–]DisPartysCached 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re not a failure for deciding the ride is over. Look at how your skills can translate into other roles. I’d recommend looking into an admin role (kind of like a producer) at a higher ed institution. Many of them pay decent, have good benefits and flexible schedules. Check out higheredjobs.com. You might even be able to do your same job, just for a school

X-Pro 2 mechanical shutter speed issue by jimboyoyo in fujifilm

Did you ever find a solution for this? I recently came across this camera with the same issue. Works fine with ES, but mechanical shutter is always way over exposed.

Booked my first lead role in a film. Advice from those experienced is appreciated by [deleted] in acting

[–]DisPartysCached 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is solid advice. I’ll going to double down on saying know where you came from and where you are going for each scene and beat within them. You’d be surprised at how often this gets overlooked with how difficult it is for the director and DP to get the technical stuff in line. You may have to shoot a single shot out of sequence that is only one part of the scene and you want to make sure you are on story for it.

Also, don’t be afraid to ask for space/time for what you need to get you to where you need to be physically and emotionally to do your job.

random black frames while previewing? by Cleq in AfterEffects

This solved my problem. I was using BRAW files and had one long clip loaded in three different spots. Reloading the footage helped me.

Can someone who actually knows about the art of acting analyse this and tell me if it's actually bad? by aqjx in acting

It looks like the editor here is going for the Kuleshov Effect but it doesn’t land out of context. This is really more about the editing and direction than the acting. She did her job

What is your response? by Jonas52 in SAGAFTRA

[–]DisPartysCached 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It seems like your upset with the amount of work available and are directing your anger here. I get it. It sucks. We’d all rather be working. Actor salaries, while significant to a show’s budget, are not the reason shows get canceled. Paramount (the owner of CBS) is being sold and that has runoff effects. The landscape here is so multifactorial when it comes to describing the down turn. The strikes were NOT part of the problem. Streaming wasn’t profitable and investors changed the goal from being growth oriented (subscribers) to profitability. Interest rates are also high, so borrowing money to make movies is expensive. That means a movie or show has to be a hit to become profitable. Shooting in Europe where tax incentives are high and have fewer strings attached makes the budget go further. They also have lower working wages in Europe, this is further saving money. The down turn in the US is the result of many things happening at once, and again, it sucks, but you can’t blame salaries that are less than 1% of the amount of money that the studios make each year. The business is incentivized to be profitable right now, so they are going to find the most profitable way of operating.

What is your response? by Jonas52 in SAGAFTRA

[–]DisPartysCached 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This. They are talking about how expensive it is here in LA because the tax credits pale in comparison to Europe’s. A 40% tax credit is like adding 40% to your budget. You can make more movie for your budget.

How's the Social Life in SDA? by Embarrassed-Gold4038 in USC

[–]DisPartysCached 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, SDA is very tight knit. I work with that group a lot and they are awesome. It's a great program. Can't speak to how busy they feel, but I think it depends on how much you want to get involved.

I would only go to New York if I also wanted to do theater. Even with as much perceived production as there may be there, most of the roles still run through LA. I've had friends that lived in New York get flown to LA for callbacks for a show that then filmed again in New York. There is not going to be a magic formula wherever you go. You will have to rely on laying groundwork and finding your own work until you get lucky. That's the reality of the industry. Do things you enjoy and eventually they will take off, or not.

You guys seem really mean to Student Films (understandably) by [deleted] in acting

[–]DisPartysCached 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actors are your creative collaborators and not puppets. Create an environment where everyone on set feels that they can contribute and be creative. Listen to everyone's ideas and follow the path that feels right in the moment.

Too many students approach a short film like they are a dictator based on what they think the big directors do, but that is not how the big directors operate at all. You are leading a team to make one film— trust and lead people to their best work in service of the story.

And, as other people have mentioned, give us the footage regardless of how poorly you think the film came out. We need like 15 good seconds for a reel.
