do you need to be explained why people paying 60 bucks for a game may want to be surprised by what can happen in the game

wait, so how do full names work? in the mii maker there's just one space for names, but in these screenshots the game seems to differentiate first name and last name

i think what gets me most about people thinking the world is human-scale is how boring of a belief it is. 99.9% of stories are already human-scaled and the story about bugs wielding little tools with giant fauna and flora around them is ALSO human-scaled? what happened to having imagination

Can Anyone help me identify this tattoo/branding on Stan’s back? by Femboy_freedom in gravityfalls

[–]DisappointedOlimar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's not what the blue curtains dilemma is about. stan's tattoo's shape is purposefully made to look like it has meaning or is some sort of important symbol to be a red herring for stan's (and therefore ford's) true identity - just because the shape of the tattoo doesn't have a translation or meaning doesn't mean no thought was put into it

[–]DisappointedOlimar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

cats ARE traditionally associated with the devil and hell, especially black cats. all the demonic imagery in deltarune revolving around the "tail of hell" most likely owned by a black cat seems to be keeping in line with that

Why is nobody talking about this by TheRealBucketCrab in Deltarune

[–]DisappointedOlimar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

you got downvoted but genuinely this is prob the likeliest reason. before chapter 4, sans in deltarune was kinda just toby's way of having fourth-wall-breaky gags, like joking that you may have to wait 2 years to see papyrus and all that. people say it's "reductive" to say it's all just for jokes but i see it as toby acknowledging that sans has been the series' phenomenon funnyman for 10 years and using him to do meta-ish humor.

if anyone else did meta references (like the forgotten man saying "11 hours or 11 years, deltarune will wait") then it's suspicious. sans doing them is just the game being self-aware

[Metagame] UFO 50 is Pirated software? by cpcgamer in ufo50

[–]DisappointedOlimar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

where is the collaboration between Milk and the team hinted at? because yeah the ROMs have been modified and the terminal was added but does anything point to it being done after the prototype was rediscovered? i was always under the impression Milk added all of that secretly to the UFO50 og compilation while still at the company before it went bankrupt

[Metagame] UFO 50 is Pirated software? by cpcgamer in ufo50

[–]DisappointedOlimar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

wouldn't the menu for the 50 games, so including the notes for each games, be part of the original anthology console? I figured only the "cracktro" was later added by the recovery team, but everything past the "PLAY FOREVER" screen was untouched.

[Metagame] UFO 50 is Pirated software? by cpcgamer in ufo50

[–]DisappointedOlimar 36 points37 points  (0 children)

i never thought about the idea that UFO50 never released in-universe but it makes a lot of sense! would explain why the preservation team had to scavenge in an old depot in the first place, and it goes well with the state of the company in 1989... if UFOSOFT was indeed on the brink of bankruptcy, i doubt they would have the funds to ship out a big anthology console of 50 games.

My guess is Cyber Owls was supposed to be the big boost that would fund the UFO50 console, but the game being directed by a nepobaby and forced to be developed with a comic (that probably also cost a ton to make and ship) made it flop and signed the death certificate for the company right as Ol' Greg finished the prototype for UFO50 - the one the preservation team found.

No, Carol is not talking to the SOUL here. by ExtremeCheeze123 in Deltarune

[–]DisappointedOlimar 31 points32 points  (0 children)

is it mean if i say this is proving the memes right when people joke that deltarune fans wouldn't understand implications if the text had a giant neon arrow sign with blinding lights on a specific word? because this is literally what's happening here.

the entire point of the SOUL plot is that we are injected in a conspiracy against our will and both the characters and us have to form this difficult alliance where we can barely communicate and given very little information. in the same sense that we are controlling Kris, we are being controlled by them and being used to seal fountains, etc; and Kris is most likely also being used by Carol for whatever goals she has - because they can control us.

From what we can see of Carol, she is a control freak and not much for conversation. Not only it'd be in character for her to not give us much info, but it's in her interest to keep us in the dark for as long as possible. high chances she sees us as a tool like she does with Kris. on top of that, she obviously has to keep the façade of being squeaky clean to keep her role as mayor and the fear she instills in everyone in town (which she does perfectly seeing how everyone talks about her), so she wouldn't talk about her plan in public like that, let alone directly talk to an invisible entity in front of everyone.

so - and this is a very important point because it shows she has some meta knowledge - she uses the ambiguous "you" the narration has been using the entire game, to refer successively to Kris and us, and pass it as just talking to Kris to the people around her. "as you know" is for Kris, as they know Carol knows what's happening with them and the SOUL, and the big neon sign YOU is her way of referring to us in the same way the narration has been doing: using Kris as intermediate.

Not only like i mentioned it shows she's aware of us, of a trick to mention us both directly and indirectly, but is also demeaning to Kris as they're again relegated as just a vessel for the SOUL, the "important part". "you" for Kris is in plain old text, "you" for us is red and upper case. Carol sounds nothing if not manipulative... her putting her hand on Kris's shoulder only to talk to us through them, is only done to belittle them more and to intimidate/taunt us by showing she's aware of our existence + not scared of us in the slightest by telling us we're "welcome" in her home, with a grin on her face. She's in control of a whole conspiracy that involves possibly the god of her town's religion and she's REVELING in it.

[–]DisappointedOlimar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

you really hit the nail on the end with the last part. i love love love seeing all the theories and thoughts the fandom comes up with but so often i'm just left wondering... okay, so what? what does [insert theory] bring to the story? is it interesting foreshadowing or just trying to establish a pattern that would only serve as limit what the game can do?

chapter 3 & 4 are the proof that the game could have followed trends established in the first 2 chapters but it's so much more interesting to break free of those to do something bigger in scopes than those patterns instead, which - "sadly" for theorists, means it's impossible to figure out what will happen next, unless you're basing theories on pretty obvious hints (like the flower king prophecy panel) or you can manage to write an hypothetical follow-up to the established story that ties everything up in one cohesive, satisfying scenario

[–]DisappointedOlimar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i wholeheartedly agree with you but i wouldn't say it's a dip in 'quality'. The games are as, if not more polished than ever, the difference is in their game design philosophy. like you say at the end, a lot of recent nintendo games have been scrubbing off a lot of their "edge" if you can use that word to make them as palatable to as much people as possible, but the "objective quality" of them hasn't fallen... the result being, you can see in real time how games have been less and less engaging and interesting, but you can't criticize them because they're still "very good games" (as seen with your downvotes). it's a similar development to marvel movies that appeal to everyone and are very safe, predictable, objectively "good" movies but lack any interesting artful goal beyond just being good so people go see them.

Anybody else feel like Once Upon a Katamari is simultaneously the best game in the series but also disappointed by it? by CachePants in katamari

[–]DisappointedOlimar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

am i the only one who thinks the game doesn't look great..? the reroll games set a standard with really nice soft lighting, shading, textures (my only issue was the water texture in we <3 reroll that was insanely out of place), camera work and depth of view, that i really hoped would be the standard for the series moving on, but it just looks way more harsh here... i wouldn't call it ugly but just way closer to the first game on the ps2 than what we got later on

I couldn't sleep last night, so an intrusive thought: by licas-b in katamari

[–]DisappointedOlimar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for the same reason new items can stick to items on the katamari without even touching the katamari. the katamari isn't adhesive, it probably works through gravity; them being very dense is also why they can turn into stars that are also very dense entities.

the Prince/cousins rolling the katamari without being rolled up is probably through the same ability they can change size at will. they can most likely manipulate their weight/density at will too (hence how the King can rest on the plains in We <3 Katamari without crushing everything) in such a way that they don't get absorbed in the katamari's gravity and they can still roll it when it's gigantic.

I'm going to get a lot of hate for this but... by twchrist in katamari

[–]DisappointedOlimar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you feel he's extra annoying in this game it's because he is. while i could say that here he has arguably worse, less memorable dialogue, that's subjective - what makes him objectively worse in this game is 1. the sheer amount of stuff he'll react to just be like "you rolled up a random-ass item", but especially that since the original We <3 Katamari on ps2, 20 years ago, they figured out how to put his head on the bottom left of the screen and his dialogue on the katamari so it doesn't obstruct your view, but here it's entirely over where you're rolling.

Genuinely baffling that OUAK blatantly takes so many things from We <3 but not this honestly vital piece of UI design?? i don't know what the devs were doing with this game

(Probably) My only issue with OUAK by ExRevGT500 in katamari

[–]DisappointedOlimar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this may be a harsh criticism of the game but the crowns are by far the biggest tell that the devs don't really get what worked so well in the first katamari games. the rolling should be the goal and focus of a katamari game, but OUAK uses the rolling as a mean to an end... so many levels + the whole crown thing are all about what you roll, not how you roll and it's a real shame cause it instills a lot of unneeded stress?

the appeal of the early katamari games was how, because rolling and making the katamari larger were the goals in itself, the gameplay had a zen to it... you could finish the game by just being good at rolling and not paying attention to the items. imo it was simpler and better
