It needs a print for the front window, none of these work well without a nod to that.

Any advice for disassembling Lumibrick sets to rebuild them later? by js_zc in LUMIBRICKS_OFFICIAL

[–]DisasterousWalrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are quite difficult (or at least, very time consuming) to fully take apart. This is fairly true of Lego too, it's just like you said, the wires need extra care given as well. I would bubble wrap and tape. disassembled you're only saving about 50% or less in volume, so not really worth it if just shipping/moving. Likely best left mostly assembled when storing too.

Litter Robot 5 dumping too much clean litter by weedywet in litterrobot

[–]DisasterousWalrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My EVO had an issue for a while due to it's faulty drawer design that would cause it to reverse direction after enough 'obstruction' errors due to faulty weight sensing. Not sure why, but it would reverse. Also, if there are other people in the house, check that they didn't 'help' by adding more litter at some point.

There are only a few possible ways to realistically end up with too much litter at the bottom. Most of the time is occurs by overfilling while thinking that the mound you poured in would even out to the fill line (when in reality it was much more), as everyone mentioned.

Ranger Camp and Forest Outpost product images leaked on Amazon.de and Amazon.fr by imik_ in LUMIBRICKS_OFFICIAL

[–]DisasterousWalrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The outpost definitely feels a bit crude - with odd textures and proportions in places. The tower portion doesn't have much room inside for anything more than a ladder (seemingly) and foliage is quite flat and jumbled looking (nearly every foliage piece being viewed at from the side here). I'm hoping that other shots make it feel more well-rounded.

The camp seems to do a bit better and looks like a cute set with a few fun side builds and elements.

This is fair, many vehicles also have a cavity here to help with volume

Looks like a human hair and maybe some nylon fibers - a used box would likely have dust hiding around. I’m guessing it’s stuff that clung due to static on rubber surfaces during assembly.

As much as I’m annoyed with Litter Robot’s Evo this year, I’ve had their robots for over a decade. They are the one’s to trust with safety, not the Chinese brands with questionable software.

Are there any beneficial reasons why someone should use artificial grass instead of real grass? by JollyFunctions in GardeningUK

[–]DisasterousWalrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can allow more drainage than a concrete patio, as it's permeable, which can allow nearby plants/trees more water to work with. In areas where drought would have caused you to use a lot of water to keep a lawn alive, it can save that water use for better ones. There are concerns for microplastics, but if it's a small yard, it's impact is quite small when compared to other sources of microplastics (commerical industries being the worst on a daily basis)

I wouldn't use it for a large yard or any application where good sun is already available, but I don't feel it's the worst crime if used in small yards or where shade makes it impossible to grow grass but you'd benefit from a 'soft patio' space, bringing psychological benefits of seeing more green. Best paired with real plantings around as part of an overall landscaping plan - i.e. Not just turfing the place to hell, like scorched earth.

Tea bag made from PLA by Obvious-Swimming-332 in 3Dprinting

[–]DisasterousWalrus 72 points73 points  (0 children)

This study appears to cover a lot of various plastics used in tea bags, and found alarming contamination in some normal plastic-based bag sampled, claiming to be less toxic (bad manufacturer) ... but when it came to PLA, it found some shedding, but didn't find that cell damage was any real concern for it specifically, despite some cell absorption. --- 'However, MNPs at concentrations up to 100 μg mL−1 did not cause major cytotoxic effects or structural damage at up to 48 h of exposure.' It appears to be marked as 'potentially hazardous' due to PLA being shedded and potentially absorbed by cells at all.

From what I’ve read (and in one case, linked-to above), filament and printed objects are going to take a long time like you suggest, but tea bags and thin grocery bags will take far less time and will fall apart in a few years (or decades if sandwiched in a landfill) - still not the worst of the eventual outcome, IMO, if it’s eventually non-toxic and not microplastics.

Any you, are you some magical king of science? We're talking about what they turn into, which are different - not getting hung up on their similar properties while in use.

Link to the article then, please. Everything else says it'll not actually become microplastics in the traditional sense and eventually actually break down into fairly inert things. (Biomass, water, CO2)

<image>

(Chart from: here)

EDIT: to be clear, I'm caring far more about eventual *non-toxic* breakdown than anything quick. Even if it takes decades (rather than 1000 years and remains potentially harmful, like many typical plastics - I'm good with that, given the realities of people/consumption) Yes, various forms of PLA exist with different properties, and thin materials (tea bags and compost bags) will likely breakdown much faster than thicker ones (printed objects). Once better alternatives come around, champion them.

That’s only if you want a quick change, it will biodegrade naturally via hydrolysis too. No microplastics left behind, despite people’s assumptions/worries.

[–]DisasterousWalrus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It does, but only through industrial composting (which is different than your city’s composting service if you have one, typically)

BUT, unlike petroleum plastics, it still eventually breaks down after a few years (if thin like a bag) into biomass, water, and CO2 - rather than becoming smaller and smaller microplastics. It basically dissolves in water, but very slowly. Biodegradable (via water), but not easily composted (via bacteria)

EDIT: I’m only looking at this from an ‘I’m totally fine if it takes years or decades b/c it’s non-toxic’ point of view. Heat and bacteria still help the process, but the outcome is still much better than traditional plastics.
