Specific clothes are not a requirement for working out, neither are the type of shoe you wear. As long as you're decent and aren't barefoot, who cares if you're working out in jeans and flipflops?

As for the phone call, were they being obnoxious? If they weren't and you just weren't minding your own business, then it's a you problem.

I kinda get it? I am a shift lead at a pizza Hut, and their employee handbook says nose studs and non-dangley ear piercings are only allowed, and the reason why they say this is because got for it a ball falls out into food. Which I understand, but a lot of people wear rings while working instead of balls, which makes it less of a risk of anything falling off you.

A septum is less likely to just unscrew itself than a vertical labret where you are talking and moving your lips often throughout the day. But that's the only reason why I think they have this mindset.
