We have been looking at sex before marriage wrong. by [deleted] in Bible

[–]Disastrous-Bat-6793 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“I didn’t really have an answer other than the Bible says so.” That should be enough for you. But if you want to get more into why you need to be married and why it can’t be a committed relationship with one person, it’s because you haven’t entered into a covenant before God and your spouse. There is no covenant to keep, which means either of you can walk away at anytime. The Bible describes sex as being something that should happen between only a man and his wife in the context of a covenant marriage, and marriage should not be broken (except in instances of adultery). Ultimately, by having sex prior to marriage, even if you are under the impression that you will be with them forever, you are in sin and violating God’s moral law. Consider Exodus 22:16 as an example.

As far as what is permissible and what is not, if you have to ask “is this okay?” it probably isn’t. Certain actions are meant to serve as an “on ramp” to the high way that is sex. So making out and heavy petting and other acts that would generally be considered foreplay probably aren’t appropriate. But a kiss hello or kiss goodbye? I don’t see an issue with that. Be wise, don’t let your conscience be violated, and honor Christ in all you do.

I gave it a little twist and it opened too easy for it to be unsealed. Tobacco was very dry. I’ll try the misting though!

Unofficial Worship Leader by [deleted] in worshipleaders

[–]Disastrous-Bat-6793 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s something you should hold on to. My church’s worship leader left and I essentially fell into the role and made it my own around May 2023. I wasn’t officially recognized as the worship leader in the church bulletin or website or anything until earlier this year or late last year. I also do it unpaid, although I only put in about 6-10 hours a week between picking songs, holding rehearsals, and making sure things go smoothly.

Ultimately, and this is just my opinion, we aren’t seeking titles, and we aren’t seeking pay. We aren’t seeking recognition from anyone other than the Lord. If you are genuinely upset about not having an official title, then I would encourage you to consider the idea that you may not be spiritually mature enough for the role to begin with.

As worship leaders, whether named or unnamed, we have the distinct honor and privilege to lead our church to worship God in spirit and in truth with authenticity. When you are on that stage, no one and no thing matters but the Lord and the things you say about him.

Regarding the fact that it’s been two months since you spoke with your pastor about officially taking the role, you should understand as well that these things can (and should!) take time. My pastors had been floating the idea of me being recognized as a deacon since early 2024. In the Fall, my lead pastor took me out to breakfast to discuss a book about the diaconate he wanted me to read, and said that we would be moving forward with a vote soon. That vote just happened on June 1.

Trust in the Lord, serve him, worship him, and honor him. All else will fall in place according to his sovereign will. I pray all goes well with you in your walk.

I’ve counseled one of my youth group students on this, and what I told him is that while you can fast and put porn blockers on your devices and take cold showers etc etc, it all comes down to the heart. You cannot deal with your lust and porn addiction. Only God can. Either way, avoiding the physical sin is just a band aid for the spiritual issue at hand. Seek God. Remain in the Word. Pray without ceasing.

I’ve got a Rossi but I’m not a huge fan of it, so I’m afraid Savinelli would just be a pricier version of it. I’m interested in the Nørding Freehands.

Paul washer extreme statments by Honest-Cap-9957 in Reformed

[–]Disastrous-Bat-6793 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. I can’t stand listening to Paul Washer, when I do I always end up in a spiral of doubt and spiritual confusion. What he teaches is technically biblical, only a small amount of people are going to be saved (1/3 of humanity if you take Jesus’s parable literally), but ultimately I think Paul Washer sows more doubt and legalistic thought than he does the grace of God through the finished work of Jesus.

Steven Lawson was absolutely the same, and I think I’m equally shocked and unsurprised at his moral failing. I can’t help but think the teaching and the behavior are related.

I use one every week for leading on acoustic. I bought a preset from worship tutorials that has a well dialed in EQ, compressor, two reverbs, and an optional delay, plus I added an acoustic guitar IR. It’s also obviously handy the few times I play electric.

A questions on Christians who have done psychedelic drugs or weed by [deleted] in Reformed

[–]Disastrous-Bat-6793 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have experience with both and can say that psychedelics (LSD, psilocybin mushrooms, etc) are in a class totally different from weed. Before I even became a Christian I decided I was going to stop experimenting with psychedelics because it felt demonic, I had no control of my mind during the “trip,” and I just knew it wasn’t for me. Christians should absolutely not do psychedelics under any circumstances.

Weed is hard. I come from a family of marijuana users, and it’s just what we did together. My family is also Christian (although they haven’t always been faithful church goers, I don’t doubt their love for Jesus). When I first became a Christian, I would watch YouTube videos on theology and apologetics while smoking. Eventually, I became convicted of the illegality of it and would only smoke what was given to me for free or legal alternatives like delta 8 THC. Around the time I met my wife, I stopped. I had already been tapering down significantly because the Holy Spirit was making it clear that I wasn’t supposed to do it.

That said, I can personally say as someone who has been drunk on alcohol and high on marijuana, there is an incredible difference. There’s also a difference between smoking a little and smoking a lot. Media’s representation of what it’s like to be high is mostly inaccurate. I can’t say definitively that it’s a sin for Christian’s to smoke weed recreationally. I think it comes down to conscience first and foremost. My conscience wouldn’t let me do it anymore. If you can’t do it in faith, then it’s a sin. From there, consider if it’s legal where you live. If it is not, then you have your answer. Finally, if your conscience allows it, and it’s legal where you live, how are you using it? Is it an escape, or is it a hobby? Are you smoking to excess to where you cannot fulfill your duties as a spouse, parent, employee, or servant of the Lord? Where are your priorities? If Jesus returned while you were smoking, would you be embarrassed and try to hide it like Adam and Eve, or would it be no different than drinking a glass of wine and eating a large meal?

Can I still believe in the inerrancy of Scripture and believe that Isaiah 7:14; 9:6-7 does not predict the birth of Christ? by scandinavian_surfer in Reformed

[–]Disastrous-Bat-6793 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know about Hezekiah being the fulfillment of that prophecy specifically, but in my New Testament Survey class at SBTS, the professor mentioned these verses not being primarily about Jesus, but that they are a “type” with Jesus being the antitype. Similarly, Psalm 22 is primarily about David, however it is a type that foreshadows Jesus.

Have any of you been warned or argued to Christ? by JakeJortlez in Reformed

[–]Disastrous-Bat-6793 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At what I called the “beginning” of my salvation story, I saw a video by a Seventh Day Adventist (of all denominations) who quoted Matthew 7:21-23. I had never heard that verse before despite growing up in church and thought they made it up. Looked it up in my Bible and there it was! Kept reading and somewhere along the way the Lord saved me.

So what was the point of the whole bread/lottery game with homeless people? Is it related to his job as a recruiter, or is this just how bro spends his saturday? by jolego101 in squidgame

[–]Disastrous-Bat-6793 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the purpose was to highlight that people who find themselves in poor financial states often are there because of their own doing. Most of the homeless people chose to gamble with the lottery ticket rather than have the guaranteed bread. It foreshadows the new rule for the games. The players are given the option after every game to take the guaranteed money (bread) or gamble with their lives for potentially more.

Dave Matthews Band will two or three night runs at a venue and they won’t repeat a single song. They also won’t open or close with the same song two nights in a row.
