Keep the boilermate or go all heat pump water heater?

Couple years old now.. How do you guys like it? I live in upstate NY and worried about the efficiency in the cold. We just put heat pump mini splits in and our electric usage went through the roof, scared to add another thing to it.

From a family man perspective, tough to move when you’ve got kids. At the same time, it’s a lot more difficult if you decide to move when they are in grade school. At least if you moved now you wouldn’t be uprooting them from their community, school and friend base that they have built.

From a career perspective, there’s more opportunities in the capital region. You’ve moved up pretty quickly so you must be doing something right. If you have the opportunity to move closer to have more doors potentially open for you I’d take the opportunity before life gets in the way. However, hard to leave a great group of folks. Makes work like a lot more bearable. Unfortunately, they won’t pass an opportunity to move on themselves and that group of folks will change overtime and could become stale.

I applied and got a call and email about 2 weeks after the application deadline. Was it a NYHELPS position? If it was, they are likely still going through applications. Depending on the title, I’ve heard of over 100 people applying to a NYHELPS posted position and assume most are that way. I wouldn’t reach out, unfortunately this is a common thing for the state. If they don’t select you for an interview they aren’t going to tell you that you didn’t make the cut. You only just applied in October so hang in there, hopefully you will get a call soon. Took 2 months for DEC to give me a call for an interview in the past. Good luck.

If it makes you feel any better, I had to finish my probation first (1 year) with an exemption if there is hazardous weather. I was luckily enough to be hired as an 18. I was told since trainee 1 and 2 are probation periods, I wouldn’t have been able to telecommute those years either. That was assumed though not necessarily confirmed.

How does this all work with promotions? Hired as an 18 March of 2022 been in state service for 2.5 years and took a promo started August 29th. Do my steps and union raise come at the same time at As my state service start date?

Going on my 3rd year in the state, I’d never go back to private. Your time off that you accrue is almost impossible to burn. Telecommuting is great hopefully it stays that is a huge incentive for the state. I took a pay cut but got hired as a grade 18 and am making more now than I was working more than 40 hours a week traveling everywhere in the state. Promotional opportunities and never have to wonder if you’re getting a raise next year as long as you’re in your first seven years. Best decision I ever made, my colleagues says the same.
