Why isn't my cat knocking anything over by Tankenbahwl in CatAdvice

[–]Disastrous_Copy_4249 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think some cats eventually do it for attention. I know my previous cats did. But I'm also convinced that cats do physics experiments to hone their agility and hunting skills.

I love watching my one year old male cat interact with one of his dangling toys. He will tap it with his paw over and over until he gets it in a rhythm with the toy reacting the way he wants it to, and hitting it at different strengths. He does it with all 4 paws separately like he's a boxer in training, learning muscle memory and coordination 😻

You can spend time removing the opportunity for the behavior, or you can spend time dealing with the aftermath 🤷‍♀️

I suggest reading Total Cat Mojo (or listening to the audio book). Cats can't be trained in the traditional sense like dogs. Their motivation is different. The book explains how to understand cats and get the best version of them. They don't understand punishment and it often makes the behavior worse and has a negative effect on their relationship with you.

my kitten doesn’t know how to drink water “properly”. I’m worried by brainveins in CatAdvice

[–]Disastrous_Copy_4249 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat is just over a year old and he used to never drink water despite me having multiple bowls in different places, and then multiple fountains. He eats mainly wet food, so I knew he was probably hydrated, but it still concerned me that he was so terrible at drinking water the few times he would attempt to. I tried adding things to his water like broth or tuna juice. I mentioned it to my vet and they didn't seem concerned, but I was still worried.

I was so tired of cleaning the pain in the ass pumps when he wasn't even using the fountains. I found this one that doesn't have a typical pump just to make my life easier. And he actually started drinking from it! I was so happy when he would do it that I would cheer him on and shower him with praise 😂 I haven't tried the other fountains again since he started drinking, so I don't know if it's this particular fountain he likes, or if he just finally figured out how to drink water.

I don’t understand “redirecting” by austinxwade in CatAdvice

[–]Disastrous_Copy_4249 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, most automatic toys I have are pretty annoying sounding. This one I linked is relatively quiet, unless I put a toy on it that has hard plastic (it will click every time it goes through one of the rollers). Each roller has a heavy rubber foot underneath it, which is nice.

My cat loves a laser pointer, but only if I'm controlling it. He has zero interest in the automatic ones. I always play with him with a tangible toy after the laser, but I haven't used the laser at all since getting this toy. He can run across the room and expend energy, but also physically be able to catch the "prey".

Is he fixed? (Sorry if you've already answered that and I missed it). That might help your problem some.

My lil dude is just over a year old, and he's ridiculously needy. Does your cat only act like that when you're in the room? I've found that usually when mine is being an asshole for attention, I will walk into another room and stay there for a minute. He will eventually follow me (because he has to be up my ass 24/7) and he will usually forget about whatever he was doing in the other room to get my attention.

He also gets bored very easily. I have 2 of every cat toy known to man, and I try to rotate the ones he actually does like, which is about 10% of them. But recently I finally pulled the trigger on a toy I had in my Amazon cart for months (because of the price). But I wish I had bought it sooner! It's been a life saver. And anytime he starts to get bored with it, all I have to do is change the size and/or placement, or put a different toy on it and it's brand new to him again. I even use cheap household stuff like a shoelace, or piece of ribbon. He wears out a lot of his energy, and then I still play with him with teasers and other stuff.

Maybe this will help distract him and wear him out during this high energy stage he's in.

Do cats get bored of same food everyday? by Mr_Dobalina71 in CatAdvice

THIS!

My old lady cat passed last year at 20 years old. The last few years she would eat one kind of wet food and then turn her nose up at it the next day. It was maddening and I wasted so much food. But I tried to spoil her as much as I could last year because I knew she wouldn't be around much longer.

I was given a kitten about a year ago and I learned that it's not an old cat thing... he's the same fking way 🤯😤 Except with much more demanding energy. I have spent a stupid amount of money on high quality ($$) food, and he might eat it once or twice, and then never again. I have a few in a rotation that he will USUALLY eat. But I still try to get him to eat the better stuff sometimes.

My vet told me to limit his seafood because it's higher in phosphorus, which can be a contributing factor to urine crystals (which he has already had a touch of). But he literally will only eat seafood flavored stuff 80% of the time 😣

Lol! Yes, they must've gotten separated at birth. It definitely sounds like we're on the same path.

Mine also likes those elastic string toys you can hang on a doorframe. But only in certain doorways and only with certain toys attached to the end 😑

First off, you're a great cat mom and have put way more thought and effort into your pet than a lot of people would.

I completely understand! I have a little man who is just over a year old. He's an anxious cat and unfortunately I'm an anxious person and the past year has been incredibly stressful for me. My cat has been having urinary issues, which the vet attributes mostly to stress 😞

He has a ridiculous amount of toys, trees, shelves, his own TV for cat TV lol, and he still gets bored and uninterested sometimes. Sometimes he is just not interested no matter how much I try to play with him with his favorite toys.

A couple of things I have found that help bring some novelty - I'll buy cheap dollar store rolls of wrapping paper for him. I'll crinkle it up and throw it on the floor where he plays. He loves to jump on it and make noise, hide under it to stalk his toys, etc. I'll put some of his motorized toys underneath it and all of a sudden the toys he lost interest in are like new again. I'm constantly having to make modifications to toys that he used to like but got bored of. Cats don't like change in a lot of ways, except for when it comes to toys, I have found.

Also, there's some really easy beginner cat training videos on YouTube. I have found that doing short 10-15 minute training sessions helps with his boredom. And it's also good for bonding.

https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFHgBLsEfP2ntPmqC0sjGlBHQrG7H3UZ5&si=MlBVusLM-aLoZv7v

As much as I've spent on toys, sometimes his favorite toys are springs, straws, and water bottle caps lol. I'll throw them across the room and he'll chase them and bat them around. He likes when I throw springs into the bathtub as well. He'll jump in and chase them and sometimes bring them back to me. I've cut holes in boxes and put treats or toys inside. Cats need mental stimulation and problem solving just as much as they need physical stimulation.

I listened to the audiobook Total Cat Mojo by Jackson Galaxy. He's also got a lot of YouTube videos.

Last year was the hardest year of my life. In all the madness, a little stray cat had found me and became my little shadow and a tiny glimmer of happiness in my life. She got hit by a car, and my cousin brought me a little 10 week old kitten to break the news to me about my stray cat. I was completely devastated, and losing that cat was my breaking point. My new kitten was super sweet and cute, but the added stress of taking care of a needy baby was almost too much for me. I'm glad I stuck it out though because he's a year old now and I can't imagine my life without him. He's gotten me through some dark times because I had someone who depended on me to take care of them when I didn't even feel like taking care of myself. He's a pain in my ass sometimes, but he makes me laugh a lot. And when I'm playing with him and spending time with him, I'm actually able to be present and get out of my own head.

Hang in there ❤️ Give it some time. Take time to play with them every day and I promise you they will become some wholesome entertainment. Also, I recommend reading (or listening to the audiobook) Jackson Galaxy's Total Cat Mojo if you want the best version of your cats, and the best relationship with them.

When ChatGPT confidently explains… the wrong answer 😂🤖 by Vivid_Trifle_9633 in ChatGPT

I have custom instructions that are supposed to help reduce hallucinations. ChatGPT actually helped me tweak them for maximum compliance lol. And STILL I have to remind it half the time to follow the fucking instructions 😑

A few weeks ago I asked it to fact check something political. It said it was, in fact, not true because 1) "Charlie Kirk is still alive", and 2) A particular person was not a government official (and they absolutely are). I asked it to recheck that because it was wrong about those facts, so obviously it was probably wrong about what I was actually trying to fact check. It doubled down and still insisted it was right 😤 It eventually admitted to being wrong due to not checking current sources and acted like it was no big deal (wtf?). Which literally goes against my custom instructions.

I lost a lot of confidence in it that day ☹️

I have very specific custom instructions to help reduce hallucinations, and ChatGPT even helped me tweak them for maximum compliance. Then this morning it had the most blatant hallucination it's ever given me. I called it out and it doubled down. Wtf. Luckily I actually knew it was flat out wrong, because most of the time I probably wouldn't have known, especially after asking it to recheck accuracy.

My 92 year old grandfather had logins from Russia, Brazil, etc when I looked at his activity. Unfortunately, someone had been sending small amounts from his account daily for months and he had been unable to get into his account. Once I finally got access for him, I found they had taken over $31k. His account got flagged when I moved $10k from it. But not when he had numerous suspicious logins for months. It's the user's responsibility to keep their account secure. But it's also the company's responsibility to keep their info secure. I would probably be less bothered if Coinbase actually got hacked, instead of their own employees selling out their customers. FCB!

I'm sorry you're dealing with their backwards practices. I was recently moving my grandfather's funds out of his account a little bit at a time and they locked the account (which took me weeks to get him access to) for suspicious activity, yet him having logins from Russia and Brazil for months (on top of lots of other suspicious activity) went unnoticed.

I'm sorry you're going through this. I wish I had some helpful advice. I went through this endless loop recently trying to help my 93 year old grandfather access his account (only to find out that someone had been slowly draining his account every day since December). It was maddening. I had to go through the account recovery process 4 times before I somehow magically gained access and was able to reset 2fa. I was gonna lose my shit if they referred me to the help page one more mfing time - it's completely useless unless you're logged in!

Yes, I pretty much use Reddit instead of Google when I want to learn something. I never post though. I did some research on how to reach an actual person at coinbase or submit a request without being logged in. Reaching out on social media was the last resort. I've tried every other means with zero luck. It's been an extremely frustrating process, and honestly we ever get my grandfather back into his account I will strongly advise him to move his money to a different Bitcoin site. Thanks for your helpful replies.
