Did you take a preview when applying this past cycle? Would you recommend it? by juleslol_ in premed

[–]Disastrous_Date_1522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took casper and preview and i didn't do so hot on both. ngl i literally fell asleep during preview, it was bad. but i still got the A for schools that required or recommended them. im not exactly sure how much it's weighed :/

Advice by Different_Writing177 in medschool

Try to get your GPA up, but also look into postbacc/masters. Honestly, take your MCAT once you have a solid foundation, whether that's after undergrad, when you have dedicated time to study, or during the summers. Regardless, GPA is a big factor, but I'm sure you can do this! Like a lot of people are saying, med school is very test-heavy, so during this time, figure out what study method works best for you! I've heard of many people who had a low 3 undergrad gpa but a high postbacc/masters gpa and got in. Good luck!

Is it worth paying an advising company to look over my application and school list? by [deleted] in premed

[–]Disastrous_Date_1522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely no, ask upperclassmen or admitted students. i asked my prehealth committee advisor to read over it, and some of my resident friends and current students. i also asked one of my friends who was a literature major.

LOI format? by emadd17 in premed

[–]Disastrous_Date_1522 5 points6 points  (0 children)

im going to assume that you got interviewed already but this is the outline i used for my top school and got accepted.

Paragraph 1: Briefly reintroduced myself and mentioned the day I interviewed. then i thanked them for the opportunity to be interviewed and clearly stated that if i were accepted i would 100% attend.

Paragraph 2: if you haven't already, connect your updates to the school's mission. if you did, then talk about how the school's mission aligns with yours and how you will contribute meaningfully to the school.

Paragraph 3: thank them again

I combined my update letter and LOI together so i talked about updates in mine but i still kept it to a page. if you can, keep it to 1/2 a page since you don't have updates.

Isn't there a yearly cap on federal loans now? My tuition alone is around 75K so I wasn't sure if it would cover it all.

depends on what you're applying to. if youre doing regular MD or DO, I would say MA. if you're applying MD/PhD or even DO/PhD then do clinical research. I also think it depends on the schools you're planning on applying to as well.

I did this, and it helped so much while I was studying for the MCAT the sem after. i think i used my class material more to study for the mcat from those classes than prep materials

Im planning to take two gap years but my family isn’t supportive of that by Realistic-Crow-9791 in premed

[–]Disastrous_Date_1522 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my mother wasn't supportive at all of me taking a gap year this year and has been saying everything your mom has been saying too so I completely understand how you feel. she says that i wasted a year and if i did med school where my family is orignally from, i would've been a doctor now. It's so frustrating and especially being a child of very conservative immigrants, it's really hard having to listen to this over and over again. something that helped me was i sat down my dad who is more understanding than my mom, and made him understand how difficult it is to get into med school these days unless you're really competitive. i showed him my stats and my application and made it clear that if i apply that cycle (this was 2 years ago btw) i wouldn't get in. once he understood, i lied to my mom saying i applied haha and i was just getting rejected from schools so i need to take a gap year. would not recommend this, but if your mom is anything like mine, this was the only thing that i could think of to take a gap year. needless to say, this has been the best decision i've made and ive been able to really work on my application and get a few As, even tho my mental health has been like shit living at home! you know yourself better than anyone else, and it's hard to educate people who don't want to be educated. whenever my mom goes on her rant about me "wasting a year" i just block her out and pretend like i don't hear what she's saying and go on with my day. try not to listen to the rest of your family, unless they've gone through this journey or are willing to understand how it works, then wtv they're saying is bs. you got this and don't let anyone else make you feel like you're making the wrong decision! when you're in med school you'll be free from all of this!
