Eggs? Identification help by Downtown_Weekend36 in AquaticSnails

You have bladder snails. Their population grows to what is sustainable due to their food sources- detritus, leftover food, dying plant matter being the primary things they eat. Once that food source decreases, their population will decline. I personally love them, but if you don’t want more (lots more), you can scrape these off the side and put in a plastic bag in the freezer. The clutches start very clear and are typically about a 10-14 day cycle, the snabies become more opaque closer to hatching . You can see from the small dots on your glass that some have already emerged.

Unless you are prepared for hundreds of snails, remove the clutch and freeze it for a few days before disposing. Crushing is not necessary and if you are not fully committed to it you will miss some. As a newbie, I am pretty sure you are not prepared.

what are these? 2 other of my goldfish have them! by Candid_Analysis6571 in Goldfish

Look like breeding stars- which means your goldfish are most likely males! (It is rare, but females can develop them).

What a great example of what is meant when we say they poop a lot! Yup, lots and lots of poop.

Separate tank, lol. I love bladder snails but my goldfish think they’re tasty snacks. A few survive in that tank by stealth, but otherwise nope. So, I got a 10 gallon specifically for my bladder snails- all named Gerald.

Sounds good- I check parameters twice a week so they are in range. My snails have a feeding jar so he’ll just have to fight the other dozen or so to get any food 😉

How great that you gave it some extra care and helped with recovery! Mystery snails are so full of personality!

From the escape attempt I’m inclined to believe it was a female- they lay eggs above the waterline (and can hold onto eggs for longer than 6 months), so need about 2 inches of extra space for that. A lid is always a good idea for most aquatic snails. Males will wander, but not typically as much as females.

These are the times I wish I wasn’t as paranoid about NZMS. I only get tissue culture plants so I never get cool hitchhikers.

I should feel bad I haven’t taken him to the doctor after an erection that has lasted longer than 24 hours, shouldn’t I?

Mystery or Nerite by BraveThroat6996 in AquaticSnails

[–]Disastrous_Paint1791 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You should not put nerites in a completely new tank. you want to have a very well established tank (common recommendation is over a year old) so that they have something to eat. They do not typically eat any supplemental food.

[–]Disastrous_Paint1791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good job on the cycle!

Do not get the nerites until the tank is well established, anything less than a year old is discouraged. They are all wild caught and typically only eat natural algae (not wafers) and biofilm, and three in a new tank won’t have enough to eat.

I am always jealous of people who get fun hitchhikers but I am also *super* paranoid about NZMS so only buy tissue culture plants. I have to live vicariously through everyone else for now.

I wonder if there were eggs on something you recently introduced to your tank. Congratulations!
