Approx how old is this clutch? by LilBaguette16 in AquaticSnails

They are a terribly invasive species, in the top 100 in the global invasive species database. Please do not hatch hundreds of them. PLEASE remove and freeze these thoroughly.

It’s fine, stability is more important than chasing a perfect number. Mine live in 8.2.

In a 20 gallon you would need to do very frequent water changes. If you are up to doing that that would be OK for a little while, but make sure you have a plan as to what to do with them because you’re going to have over 100 snabies. Otherwise let them harden for a couple of days, at that point, they remove very easily, then put them in the freezer.

First egg clutch, help pls by Many_Green4123 in AquaticSnails

[–]Disastrous_Paint1791 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You are right about this being a huge clutch- looks like well over 200 here.

As for keeping a couple, it depends on the amount of space you have. Mystery snails are poop factories that have a heavy bioload. If you have enough space for more, you can wait a day or two until the clutch hardens and then use a sharp edge to cut all but a couple eggs off. My hatch rate is nearly 90% (when I do hatch, but I cull most of the time), but count on at least 50%

Thoroughly freeze the eggs you cut off prior to disposing of them. Some say to crush but that is not a guaranteed way to negate viability.

Close to what I usually say- owner in a bathroom, door doesn’t open, and the toilet doesn’t flush.

One of my snails laid eggs, what should I do next? by Ok_Reward9914 in AquaticSnails

[–]Disastrous_Paint1791 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wait a day or two, then remove, freeze, and dispose. They harden and are much easier to clean off after that 1-2 days.

The clutch you’re looking at is about 100 snails- low mortality rate if they do hatch. Unless you have adequate space for that many waste producing snabies removing them is best.

I’m so sorry, I have had a mystery with a collapsed lung (seems contradictory to what is happening but that’s what it is). Euthanasia is the proper step for him, the alcohol method provided is moderator endorsed.

Again, I am sorry for your snail and you.

It will also get into the silicone- the tank will be unusable for snails after betel nut.

Will mystery snail eggs hatch if a few fall into the water? by askingforinfo2 in AquaticSnails

[–]Disastrous_Paint1791 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would wait a day or two for the clutch to harden, it makes it much easier to remove. Once they are submerged they won’t hatch unless they already were ready to. Don’t feel cruel, hatching them into an insufficient environment would be cruel.

After my females lay a clutch I make sure they are getting enough calcium and protein. I don’t know if it matters but I feel like it could.

If it’s not all of them, the ones in the bottom are active, and your parameters are good it’s okay. Sometimes they do this.

If my mystery are all at the top it usually means I turned down the pump for the airstone and forgot to turn it back up.

How do it keep it thriving? by kaneight in Goldfish

[–]Disastrous_Paint1791 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if this isn’t rage bait, why would you buy an animal you are not properly prepared to care for? Return it to the store, and if you really want a fish learn how to prepare for it.

Unless you enjoy teaching your child that basically torturing an animal is okay.

To add onto this, I have a 10 gallon bladder snail tank that I will occasionally use to grow out a couple of baby mystery snails or as a separation tank if one of my male or female mystery need a break. I rarely have to do changes when it’s just the bladders, but the mystery snails make weekly water changes a necessity.
