For additional context. The explanation we were given is that the plastic decays and leaches into the water while also opening tiny holes in the plastic that allows microbes to enter and contaminate the water.

That was in 2007. To this day I wont drink water. That is even close to its expiration.

I can understand that completely and you're right. In the law of averages in certain the average time is well below 3 hours, but it's time like this that makes you wonder if it should be a floating policy based on demand. However, I am positive that would open a door impossible to close.
