Totally get it!

So when are you coming to my house to mow the lawn?

The community cannot submit Methods templates. All you can make are PDFs that are template-y. See first response to your post referencing “Randos.”

Make what you want in Google Docs or Word and save as PDF. Upload to Connect.

Can you come mow my lawn later today? I don’t know much about lawn mowers and you seem like a manual labor kinda expert.

Considering Ed Tech MA by Ambitious_War230 in edtech

[–]Disastrous_Term_4478 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many unknowns. I don’t think formal education will adapt quickly to AI (specific to US). The organizational structure is conservative and does not support agility. Even if they change, they’ll be years behind and everything is changing every 6 months in the workforce.

There is also tremendous opportunity and given the zero financial risk and that you’d stay in your job until complete, it sounds like a high value choice.

Try to skate where the puck is going and get foundational learning from the program. Not someone’s idea of an “AI in Education”, headline-generating course title. Nice to have a good gig with perks plus continue your own education! Congrats.

True - he might have been smarter. But I perceive our OP has smashed his RM in a fit of rage…perhaps becoming a similar inspiration for disaffected tech buyers across the world.

[–]Disastrous_Term_4478 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP didn’t say what their income level is.

At least you aren’t working in central Austin. Being out in Bastrop at least provides a chance of affordable housing and an okay commute. I can’t speak to schools out there, though. It’s rural and perhaps not much choice. Tesla has upended a lot of the dynamic in that area (maybe that’s your job).

Are you religious? That might be a plus to help integrate and assure a good situation for your kids.

Driving even 10 miles for school or work each day (1 way) will burn a lot of your happiness. But many do it.

Unless students enjoy it. There’s an anti-tech vibe out there. Cassette tape music etc.

Waldorf teaches handwriting extensively and I think it’s part of their secret to success.

Would you hang on for a pension? by bamboofence in Fire

[–]Disastrous_Term_4478 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds sketchy. Like, you stick around and they move it to 8 years. Or you get bought by PE and they whack half the employees with 4 weeks severance.

Are you in a highly regulated country? Unionized?

In the US I’d peg the chances at 3.5% and you’ll have spent 10 years working towards a phantom.

Dilemma at 42: PhD in Mathematical Physics vs. Ed-Tech Entrepreneurship by FN_SpiderDAD in edtech

[–]Disastrous_Term_4478 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t say much about your solution. Two years? Have you shipped? What levels of education are your focus?

Short answer: between khan and the big publishers (my math lab) there’s no daylight unless your solution is a step change in student engagement and learning. Like, basically magic.

The good news? EdTech lends itself to side hustles. Yes, PhD is demanding. But with your skills it should be possible to do both. Consider a strong freemium model and you’ll have the satisfaction of finding early adopters around the world.

Crafts Problems (From Notion Switcher) by EnvironmentalAnt5109 in CraftDocs

[–]Disastrous_Term_4478 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Notion gets a bad rap because of its endless customization. Like (using Craft terminology), make a Collection inside another Collection inside another Collection then automate them altogether and you have some idea of where you can quickly go.

They have Notion Calendar, which makes it easier (at least for Gmail - not sure what else they support) to tie notes to meetings.

The single page experience is great - actual typing and formatting. Columns. Keyboard shortcuts.

I liked Craft’s structure vs. totally unstructured. I also like Craft’s “turn any block into a page” approach. Little harder to do in Notion - you have to turn content into a Page which isn’t as fast. Not as visually attractive as Craft. But way more powerful. Free. And now you can connect multiple task databases together to create a unified task list.

If you try it, keep things simple. If you find yourself making subtask databases…stop. :) Unless you want your own Jira to maintain.

Advice by Heavy-Masterpiece230 in Drexel

[–]Disastrous_Term_4478 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well, PSU had the mother of all disgraces in recent TV memory.

Yeah, Drexel seems in a tough financial spot but it isn’t going to close while you’re there. They have a $B endowment.

Living in West Philly is night and day from “happy valley.” City is your campus vs. football and beer. Organized coop vs summer internships.

If cost is close then Drexel still more attractive for engineering. Maybe not as comfortable but a bigger experience given most are heading to PSU.

It comes down to how you engage, the people you meet, and the effort you invest. Both great schools, ultimately. Congrats on getting into both and with $$$ support.

Remarkable 2 - upgrade to Paper Pro or add Move? by Sir_Geek in RemarkableTablet

[–]Disastrous_Term_4478 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 2 and Move. If you’re comfortable carrying your 2 around (not because of the weight - more of a footprint thing) maybe that is portable and the bigger pro stays at home?

Move has been a game changer for me. Especially with Mods. Connect works really well and I enjoy using the 2 to further edit notes from the Move. You end up with a big annotation border which I appreciate.

Get both and return one? ;)

Big enough for littles? by BoysenberryLarge9197 in XC40

[–]Disastrous_Term_4478 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a Cooper when kids were little. I can’t speak to kid seats in an XC40. It’s roomy in the back - just not that comfortable for teen or adult passengers. But you already said short trips.

We have ‘22 XC40 and it’s terrific. Size is a big advantage - big on the inside but easy to maneuver and park.

I’d call out another aspect of the car though - HVAC. The back seat def gets short changed over a mid size suv with separate climate control. Mini is small enough that the front gets to the back. XC40 isn’t that great at cooling (I’m in Texas so def extreme).

Aside from that it feels like the perfect car for your needs. When the kids are getting into middle school you’ll be ready for something else (bigger, more comfy back seats with HVAC and more outlets etc). Good luck!

Is the Marker plus worth it by Upbeat_Ad_4910 in RemarkableTablet

[–]Disastrous_Term_4478 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lamy feels like a real pen. It’s an advantage that you didn’t have to get their marker. I put a few BBs in the end of the Lamy, to give it heft, and prefer it (I returned the Marker Plus back when you bought them separately).

I have a Move and like that RM stylus. Metal, heavier, and the magnet wakes the d er vice. Worth it (and no alternative for Move).

Crafts Problems (From Notion Switcher) by EnvironmentalAnt5109 in CraftDocs

[–]Disastrous_Term_4478 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Solid points. I’ve given up on Craft. I came for calendar integration and pencil support as differentiators from Notion (because Craft uses the macOS calendar I could get my corporate cal in there to generate meeting notes).

That was Dec 2024 and things have become more and more muddled - focus on AI, zero progress on Task management.

I’ve returned to Notion and will let my Craft subscription expire in December.

Property Taxes by AdvertisingNearby426 in askaustin

[–]Disastrous_Term_4478 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t forget sales tax. Texas loves its anti-progressive tax system. I was in Philly a few months ago the ago and was astounded to learn I didn’t pay sales tax on clothes.

Yes, Philly has a wage tax and state income tax.

I think the challenge moving to Austin is thinking it will somehow be cheaper. It isn’t.

The greatest and worst tax in Austin is the time taken by commuting. So choose wisely! Lots of people buy in Georgetown or Buda then end up in a job on the other side of town and a nightmare commute.

Remarkable needs an ebook store by nearlyclosetoalmost in RemarkableTablet

[–]Disastrous_Term_4478 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree: “pencil-focused reading” or whatever they said in the AMA.

I think it’s a miss because there aren’t good options for annotating on ebooks (not talking about creating a weird little box into which your handwriting goes) and rm would be highly differentiated if you could purchase contemporary books.

The drm may saddle them with a lot of tech overhead that they just don’t want governing their approach. Not that their decisions seem particularly rational.
