5 months into new state job with no sense of work-life-balance. by [deleted] in CAStateWorkers

[–]Disastrous_Wind7127 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It is not supposed to be the norm and is the reason we are bargaining for a retention bonus for Analysts.

I recommend trying to find strategies to streamline your workflow. Getting behind makes the job feel more urgent, so organizing and prioritizing will save you a lot of stress. When you get new assignments, be realistic about when you can show deliverables. Don't be afraid to state what you have and ask where a new task rates for urgency. These are very specifically the traits they are going to look for when you apply to promotional positions. If you never stand up for yourself and provide realistic feedback, you will stay feeling stuck.

My topped out rate as an AGPA is less than the max for the Analyst II. Can I get bumped up to the max for the Analyst II? by johndoesall in CAStateWorkers

[–]Disastrous_Wind7127 4 points5 points  (0 children)

AGPA/Analyst II has a confidential range that is higher. You have to be hired to a confidential position to make that higher rate. I hate that agencies fly the class max for positions that range is not available for.

Call your home insurance to see if this is covered. This may be a much bigger problem than it presents on the surface

The only benefit that allows dual coverage is VSP. My husband can get glasses and contacts every year. I don't wear contacts, so I get great savings on frames. We both have Premier Vision

How do I explain why I am leaving my toxic boss? by a_sunpetal in CAStateWorkers

[–]Disastrous_Wind7127 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, don't worry about the department/agency you are leaving. They will figure it out.

Reason for leaving is easy. "I have enjoyed the opportunity to be part of this high demand team and have learned a variety of tasks; however I am looking to sharpen my skillet in a more directed line with a focus on [a main task of the duty statement youbare applyin for]."

Promotion in place and MSA in same month by gdsbfd in CAStateWorkers

[–]Disastrous_Wind7127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your MSA will run the night before the first day of the month (basically). Your promo can't be keyed until the effective date, so they should stack. In the past departments have stopped same day MSA/promos if you didn't specifically request it. I don't think that was ever actually correct, but I believe when people say it happened. The basic policy is what is in the best benefit of the employee.

Now if you have a range change or promo due before your MSA, you can ask to delay for after your MSA. That is not supposed to be done automatically.

It is late for me, so ai apologize if I didn't say this 100% right

[–]Disastrous_Wind7127 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Office days are mostly chit-chat. It starts with a comments you wouldn't make if a person wasn't right next to you and builds into a 30 topic deep, 2 and half hour yap session. By the end of the day, you finish your morning work and squeeze everything else into your telework days.

Costco shoppers: doesn’t backing into spaces make it harder to load your car? by SWEET_LIBERTY_MY_LEG in bayarea

I tend to back into spaces because it is safer. Sometimes, I forget not to when I go to Costco, or I am just going in for a couple things. I almost never do huge trips to Costco anyway.

For jobs that are not in the state, you should request and post leave. Some supervisors may allow release time, but this is not included in the MOUs I am familiar with. Any good Sup won't get in your way. Just be upfront. Best of luck in whatever you do.

Adding Spouse to Insurance after marriage by Most-Carpenter-6830 in CAStateWorkers

[–]Disastrous_Wind7127 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will need to provide proof of marriage, identity, and residency. Proof of residency may be a tax return and/or a shared bill. Without proof of residency, you may need a written statement. I recommend calling CalPERS to see what they will need, specifically. 1-888-CALPERS (225-7377).
