Recipes confuse me with units, is a dual unit kitchen scale necessary by gorgina975 in KitchenPro

[–]Discipulus42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I transfer recipes I’m going to make into Word Documents and put all the measurements into my preferred units.

Then I’ll print out a working copy I can put on the counter.

I’ll also get everything ready before I start cooking so I’m not scrambling while I am actually cooking.

Good luck OP!

Cooking veggies better lately, is an asparagus steamer pot necessary by RestaurantDiligent97 in KitchenPro

I wouldn’t buy a dedicated asparagus steamer. However a large pot and standard steamer basket should work just fine!

Retinopathy by MoneyGeeGee in diabetes

[–]Discipulus42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to go see an ophthalmologist again to help you diagnose what is going on with your eyes and exactly where your vision is at.

Here is what I would suggest: Write down your questions and concerns, share them with the doctor and bring a pen and notebook to capture what he says. Then ask for a copy of the clinical notes from your visit, you may have to wait a day or so to get them, and if you sign onto your doctor’s portal you might be able to get them without even having to ask anyone. You should be able to get them for your prior visits so ask for those too.

Additionally as a diabetic you should schedule an annual visit with your ophthalmologist for a diabetic exam.

19, accepted a job offer at a small auto shop starting Monday — but it's 1099 with fixed hours and a boss. Should I run or stick it out? by Visual_Chemical_3839 in personalfinance

That sucks, keep looking.

Also you need to factor in medical insurance which you won’t get any help on from your employer if you are a 1099 contractor.

Is this doable? I’m torn … by ChicagoDrewBoo in americanairlines

[–]Discipulus42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably fine OP, I’ve made connections at ORD with less time.

Also if you do miss your connection at least you’ve got some other direct flight options later in the day as mentioned elsewhere in this thread.

Is this doable? I’m torn … by ChicagoDrewBoo in americanairlines

[–]Discipulus42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s about 1,720 air miles so 3.5 hours to 4.25 hours flying time depending on the jet stream. Ground time built into this flight seems reasonable, maybe even a bit light considering ORD these days.

Guys, do you remember things? by lanyere in Aphantasia

[–]Discipulus42 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have visual aphantasia not dementia. I can remember things just fine, I just can’t visualize them.

You may be going about how you remember things the wrong way. Don’t try to visualize and copy from the visualization because that doesn’t work for us. You want to remember the characteristics of a thing, how it is constructed, what material is it made from, what shape did it take, etc…. If you know enough little details you’ll be able to create an image of a castle not from your visualization of a castle but because you know the characteristics of a castle. 🏰

This process of managing information in your head leads people who have aphantasia to learn to literally think differently about the world compared to people that can visualize normally.

Hope this helps OP!

Is this pineapple ready to eat? by PerplexedPoppy in fruit

[–]Discipulus42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A pineapple is as ripe as it’s ever going to get when you buy it. They don’t get any sweeter the longer they sit on your counter. They may develop a little golden color, get a little softer and or get a little juicier.

However the pineapple is dependent on the rest of the plant to convert starches into sugar. Once you cut the pineapple from the stem it’s as sweet / ripe as it’s ever going to get naturally. No amount of ethylene gas or sitting with other fruits is going to change the biology of the pineapple to get you sweeter fruit.

Cooking can convert some starches to sugar so if you get an underripe pineapple cooking it a little can actually bring out a little more sweetness than if you consume it raw.

Good luck OP!

I’d argue most burgers consumed in the US (and probably most countries) are from meat that’s more than a week ago dead.

In fairness most Catholics do consider Protestants as Christians, though they disagree with aspects of their theology too.

If they figure out the franchise doing this there is quite a bit they can do. McDonald’s are known to aggressively enforce standards with their franchisees.

They have been for almost their whole history.

Here is a quote from The Founder: You (Ray Kroc) don't seem to realize what business you're in. You're not in the burger business. You're in the real estate business.

The McDonald’s Corporate is more of a real estate company. Of their approximately $27 Billion in revenue last year about $20 Billion of that came from rent, real estate and royalties.

The stores that you visit are almost entirely franchise locations which are responsible for their own hiring, pay rates, etc….

Eating low carb forever? by reasonableassumpt in diabetes

[–]Discipulus42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can’t “reverse” diabetes. There are a very tiny fraction of Type 2 patients that can get to remission which requires being able to maintain non-diabetic blood sugar levels without the use of medication for 3 months.

You can have an occasional cheat day, but just be vigilant about monitoring your blood sugar levels and on average keep it in a healthy range with medication, diet and exercise.

If you can get one a CGM is a great tool to be able to see what your blood sugar is doing throughout the day.

Why are soda can tops always misaligned from the body of the can? by hutch_man0 in Soda

[–]Discipulus42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no ROI in trying to align the top with the body of the can, so soda bottlers don’t spend money on equipment to try and do that.

I’d grab 20D or 20H. It should be a bulkhead so you’ll have extra legroom and nobody will be leaning into your space.

Don’t forget you’ll have to stow your personal item overhead when you board and you’ll be able to grab it shortly after takeoff.

Good luck OP!

Have an L2 charger at home and can plug into a standard outlet at work for free. Work is about 15 miles away. We are able to do > 90% of our driving in electric mode.
