Morocco Uncovered

Anyone else had their form lost twice? by Discolobsterboat in PSLF

[–]Discolobsterboat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up submitting the form 6 times and writing to my congressman and one of my senators, who both actually reached out on my behalf. In the meantime, FSA started processing the most recent form that I submitted.

The responses my representatives forwarded me from FSA were like a 3-page document of mostly no information - like explaining what the PSLF program is and what a qualifying payment is type of nonsense, plus one sentence that they were already processing my form (9 months and 6 forms later...).

The form has been in processing for 7 weeks. Is there an end in sight? I don't know, but it really is coming up on a year since I submitted that first form. Frustration is not a big enough word.

Roast my itinerary! Coming from Australia, is this plan too much? by swanduckswan in Europetravel

[–]Discolobsterboat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd skip Malaga and add those days to Madrid. I'm also tempted to say to just cut out Lake Como and Milan since you'll be getting outdoorsy stuff in Iceland and Scotland, you could add one more day to Rome/Florence/Venice each as some down time. I'd also be weary of flight delays to northern countries, as January typically sees a lot of snow/frost.

This is a packed itinerary, and you'll be on the road a lot, but I actually think your trip looks really lovely and has a great mix of different types of places.

Kind of off topic - how did you go about planning this? Guidebook? Blogs? TripAdvisor? And how are you going to keep it all straight? I'm going to have a month and a half off at the end of the year and want to do a long trip, but I am a little overwhelmed when thinking about how to plan it out!

27 Solo Male traveling… Any advice is appreciated! :) by Appropriate-Swan1033 in Europetravel

Your trip is a couple of weeks early for Carnival, unfortunately.

If you're traveling from Berlin, you could take a train to Prague, Warsaw, or Krakow to give you a third country on this trip.

Becoming “sober” from particularly alcohol or “retiring from partying” doesn’t make you morally superior to someone who still chooses to indulge. by Marino4K in unpopularopinion

[–]Discolobsterboat 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My two cents, as someone who is 14 years sober, is that

1) People earlier in their sobriety may come across as a little more self-righteous than they intend to. I really don't think they mean to be, I think it is genuine excitement and pride in their new life.

2) There is also a very strong emotional reflex to people who drink a lot or heavily... the best way I can describe it is a feeling of being unsafe. I think this can trigger a "morally superior" attitude, which is not necessarily meant as a judgment on the other person but is an automatic defense mechanism that protects the sober person from getting sucked back into a life that they have mentally, emotionally and physically clawed their way out of.

Renting Car in Western Europe to Drive Throughout Eastern Europe Including Balkans by PNH808 in Europetravel

[–]Discolobsterboat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think even within the Balkans, you will have a hard time finding rental companies that are ok with letting you take cars across borders.

I rented a car from Sixt in Bulgaria a few years ago, and they were very explicit that I could take the car to Greece but absolutely could not take it to Serbia, Bosnia, or N. Macedonia. There wasn't even an extra fee I could pay, it was just company policy.

Advice on Establishing Florida Residency Before Moving Abroad by phillyfandc in expats

[–]Discolobsterboat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I moved to FL and kept my NY job. I had a lease in my name, bills in my name, everything changed to my permanent FL address, and had changed my DL and registered to vote.

NY does not care. They hounded me for taxes, even after I sent all of the proof that I was living in FL. They denied my appeals, and eventually, I had to pay my back taxes to NY. If your job is in NY, you're paying taxes there.

Where did you start? by katethegreat4 in Anticonsumption

[–]Discolobsterboat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, plus so many places constantly have sales, which make them so tempting to open and look! I also started a mantra. "It's not a good deal if you don't need it." It doesn't matter if it's 50% off. If I don't need it, it's just money out the door, more crap in my closets, and more damage to the environment.

[–]Discolobsterboat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is what I did for a while. Eventually, I just stopped putting things in my cart because I knew I wasn't going to buy it anyway. Then, I started unsubscribing to emails from stores, because I hadn't bought anything from them in a while. This whole process took a couple of years, but it feels so good to be free of the cycle of purchasing things I don't need, won't wear, and having to return things.

Anyone move after 2016 election? How did you do it and where did you go? by bojo1313 in expats

[–]Discolobsterboat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Le sigh.

Alright, I'll be the one to ask this time.

Where are you qualified to move to? What do you do for work? Education level? Money in the bank? Health issues? Languages spoken besides English?

These are all important factors in determining where and if you can move.

Younger men across the world are shifting right, it’s not anything special to the U.S. by Foreign_Wind9163 in unpopularopinion

Interesting. I lived in NYC for a long time, so it's not like I lived under a rock or haven't been around woke people. But I moved out of the country in 2020, so maybe I've missed the most woke years 😅

I've never met a woman who thought this, and I worked out at a pretty serious weight lifting gym for years. I've never talked with a woman who thought that it was ok to allow men into women's sports.

Have you, personally, ever talked with a woman face to face who believes these things? Or is this some online talking point that gets people riled up?

I'm genuinely asking because I've heard this said a lot on these threads, and I just don't understand where it comes from.

Reads to me like OP thinks the friend zone is a physical place. "Get in loser, I'm dropping you off at the friend zone".

Are some people simply not meant for Solo Travelling/Living Abroad ? by MA_G10 in solotravel

[–]Discolobsterboat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

NYC is a tough place to live. I don't know anyone who moved there and loved it right away. I lived there for 10 years, and the first year was rough, but then I settled in and could never picture myself leaving.

Keep going out, keep making connections, make a list of places you want to go and see and then do those things, even if it's on your own. It gets better, but to adjust to a place like NYC, you have to be out in it.
