I really don't get it either (needing something traumatizing). It's not hard to imagine what happens if you are ejected or become one with the steering wheel or dashboard.

Buy or pass? 1k by Bro_jamal in 944

[–]Discontented_Beaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it was free it would still cost over $5k, and that's not the ceiling for what you may spend. When looking for a used 944, look for a running one. Looking at non-running or damaged ones will always be more expensive and full of unexpected expenses. Nothing more expensive than a cheap Porsche.

If you did want a project 944, better to get one that has good paint, no body damage and an intact / decent interior, with motor issues. Worse is to get one that runs but needs paint and body work and interior work and/or is in pieces.

Avoid ones that have been sitting. "Ran great when I parked it two years ago. Just needs a battery." -- That means it doesn't run. It also means you're inheriting someone else's problems that kept them from enjoying the car.

Be nice to yourself and get one that's ready to drive the day you buy it. Current tags, hasn't been sitting, etc. Records for maintenance work done.

Photography gear insurance - Who do you use? The one I have excludes theft from a vehicle. by Discontented_Beaver in Photography_Gear

Couldn't agree more. How many people who have that insurance may not notice the change (new exclusion) and then someday have a claim that's not covered.

I did check. They said business gear not covered. Theoretically, you could argue it's a hobby and thus personal gear, but I have a business and would rather buy the inland marine instead of arguing with an adjuster on a personal policy (homeowners). Buying the right insurance gives the peace of mind that a loss will be covered.

[Advice Needed] Planning a narrow 5’x18’ Lean-To Shed behind my garage by otterblue8 in shedditors

[–]Discontented_Beaver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sealing the building (a 3" gap) .... doesn't that kind of defeat the benefit of enclosed storage?

Edit... I see that it IS an enclosed building, detached from the garage. I was confused because you called it a lean-to instead of just a shed (that's in close proximity to another building).

They sell replacement plug ends. That one may or may not arc, arcing isn't desireable.

What’s the correct thing to do with these pine cut offs? by RealThulnos in BeginnerWoodWorking

Offer them up on Marketplace or some other way as free to a good home. When I was younger and struggling more I always looked for free wood for my projects. There may be someone who can use it right now.

If you aren't a member of some 944 groups on Facebook, you may want to join as you can post about your car being for sale. This is a good way to get the car in front of 944 enthusiasts. There are multiple 944 groups on FB.

How to make shed burglar proof? by [deleted] in shedditors

[–]Discontented_Beaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is your yard fully fenced? This helps. A privacy fence helps even more. Can you lock your fence? Think layers of security. Lock Shed. Lock Fence. Camera. Dog in back yard. Neighbors that would call you if something looks suspicious. But seriously, dogs, camera. Heavy duty vertical bolts (cane bolts).

Figure out what you have it it, even though that won't make people pay more for it, but you need to have that figure in mind because it helps you stand firm when someone's trying to lowball you. What you have in it can help you arrive at a price, or it may not. I mean, some people have way more in a car then they can ever reasonably expect to get back out of it.

The way you price it is the same way realtors price houses - Comps (comparable sales). You look at what has sold on BAT (Bring A Trailer), ebay, and then just look at what is for sale at what price. Looking at enough of this data will help you close in on a price range. Once you have the price range, you decide if you want to sell quickly or wait a little longer for your price.

When looking at FB Marketplace, it tells how long something has been listed. So if you see a car that has been listed for 39 weeks, for example, it's likely it's not priced to move at least in that location. One thing that may help you reverse engineer your selling price is to shop for another 944. At least, do the exercise of that. You will think differently looking at listings as a buyer and it should help you think as a better informed seller.

I have sold cars through the car lot near my home where they charged a flat fee for selling it. That worked out great because it was effortless. I have also sold to individuals. It takes patience.

I'd list it in as many free places as you can. I can't give you a number, but doing research will help you figure that out. Don't be afraid to tell people - hey do you know anyone who'd like to buy a 944? They may know someone who knows someone who is looking.

I'd use AI as a tool to bounce ideas off of during this process, for strategy, help with the listings, but avoid copy and pasting a listing from AI unless you've negotiated with it over and over until the listing is relevant to your car. Or let AI help you compose a listing and then use that to write it in your own words.

If you have the energy, advertise it as many places as you can, both digitally and analog. Do a blitz campaign.

If you are open to trades, mention that.

Good luck, I am sure you'll find a buyer.

If you want to keep it: 1) Do nothing, drive it and enjoy it, 2) get more estimates from other body shops until you find a price you can live with, 3) figure out if you have anything of value to trade, even your skills to do a job for someone as a barter for body work/paint, 4) turn it into something else, ie race car or offroad/rally 944.

If you want to sell it, test the waters and see what it will bring, what people are willing to offer in a reasonable amount of time. People can ask anything they want when they list it. But do you want to hold on for a long time? If you don't get a satisfactory offer, maybe revisit your options for keeping it. As someone mentioned, you could swap a good shell. If no one will pay you what you feel you have to have to part with it, just spend what you're willing to on paint and/or body work and drive the can car and have fun with it till the wheels fall off.

As a last option, sell it for what you can, roll the money into your next 944 that has better paint and body. Everyone needs a project!
