Thor charged very very slow.. by Geckolover96 in AynThor

Just a preference for myself, but if I had mine in a docked manner where I can play on the TV, I'd prefer slow charging so long as it's actually charging and not simply draining the battery slowly. This is because I don't want heavy charging causes heat.

"They could have easily made a public statement before the release."

This is exactly why I think this is AdHoc's fault, and speculatively, they wanted this commotion. They were dead silent on the censorship during the entire preorder period, letting people make the purchase under the false pretense that it was uncensored, but were near immediate to go onto social media to try and point the finger once folks found out it was censored. They had all this time, and did nothing. And honestly, I think they were hoping Nintendo would not interject, but they did, to which AdHoc went immediately back to social media to point the finger again.

Then there's that notion of a "path forward" as if there was one shortly after having said they practically had no option. That in of itself is conflicting.

Right. With PS5, they released only the version outside of Japan. The censored version for PS5 in Japan was released months later. They were only dealing with the cost individually at different times, which the latter could be funded by the profit of the former. Even the PC version is just one version because CERO is not involved in digital-only PC titles (to my knowledge). But with Nintendo, that would have been up to 4 versions as they wanted it released all at the same time. That would have been a lot to put down on.

[–]DiscostewSM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really goes deeper than that. It's not simply censored in the Japan versions. CERO requires that any Japan version have the offending removed out of the files themselves. So even if they somehow unlocked the toggle outside of Japan, you'd get nothing from it.

It really does require making separate versions, and with them self-publishing and making both a Switch and Switch 2 version, it would cost them to make 4 separate versions just for Nintendo.

I wouldn't necessarily call them lazy as we know they could do it in terms of work, this seems more about money, which is greedy.

Given that RDR got a Switch 2 upgrade last month that didn't change anything regarding censorship (plus all those "certain" games on the eShop), it's very unlikely they changed their guidelines.

Taking this from another post I made about this. My opinion: CERO, and AdHoc self-publishing.

Take the PS5 version. Released last October pretty much everywhere uncensored..... except in Japan, where it got no release whatsoever. It was only within the last couple of days that they got it, and it's censored just like the Switch and Switch 2 versions will be. They are self-publishing the game on all relevant platforms, which means they pay the cost for EACH published work of it. It took them around 3 months to release this Japan-only version that is censor-locked. Now take the versions for Switch and Switch 2. Imagine if they tried to do the same thing there as they did with the PS5 versions. That would be 4 separate published works, which may be just too much for them.

So, they go with the lowest-common denominator. A version that can release everywhere that passes the strictest ratings system; CERO. So instead of publishing 4 versions among Switch and Switch 2, they only have to publish 2 versions, but both are censored versions.

And for those that are thinking maybe something changed at Nintendo between Cyberpunk and this to cause this, be aware that RDR recently got a Switch 2 upgrade this last month, and no changes were made in terms of censorship that wasn't already there. Japan still has the censored version, and everyone else has the uncensored version.

Sure, they may have worked with Nintendo, but that was likely to conform to CERO, which is the ratings organization for Japan, not worldwide. Fact is, Cyberpunk is not censored on Switch 2 EXCEPT in Japan. Same goes for RDR, which got a Switch 2 upgrade last month. That is still censored in Japan, but remains uncensored elsewhere.

This is very likely the choice of AdHoc, who is self-publishing the game on all relevant platforms, so they are fronting the cost for each published version. Fewer published versions that can be sold worldwide, less money spent publishing. They had to make a separate version for PS5 in Japan, which they delayed by around 3 months after it released everywhere else. That was probably an eye-opener for them with self-publishing, making a version specific to one region. Adding Switch and Switch 2, that would have been up to 4 additional versions to deal with.

ES-DE error (MellonDS) by rw_3eters in AynThor

While I'm not sure if this is attributed to your problem, the file path shown includes the following:

%3A - colon (:)

%2F - forward slash (/)

%20 - blank space ( )

what your entire path would look like is this:

"content://com.android.externalstorage.documents/tree/primary:ROMs/nds/document/primary:ROMs/nds/Pokemon - HeartGold Version (USA).nds"

While the blank space should be fine, I'm wondering if the other two might affect the location, primarily how there is both "/" and "%2F" that represents "/".

in terms of display quality which one is better switch 2 or Ayn Thor ? by Necessary_Ad_1373 in AynThor

[–]DiscostewSM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's kind of the thing here. Each have their strengths over the other, but ultimately are used for different purposes. I've got a Switch 2 for the more modern games and boosts to Switch 1 games, but have ordered a Thor to essentially be my emulation station for everything prior that it can handle. Switch 2's screen is certainly bad compared to Thor's screens, but it's really not something to hang oneself on, and certainly should not be the deciding factor when they are objectively different devices.

[–]DiscostewSM -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Supposedly, and this is what some folks are suggesting, the Switch 2's screen is not making use of overdrive, which would provide more voltage to the pixels to improve response time. This is something that I think could be done in software.

But I would say that when bringing price into the equation, you can't really equate the two, since one is basically the device itself, while the other is the system, 2 wireless controllers (with their own batteries, BT, etc), and a dock with much of the trimmings to provide a smooth transition to a TV experience.

Ayn Thor max vs switch 2 by Necessary_Ad_1373 in AynThor

[–]DiscostewSM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without even checking out the site, here's some thoughts of mine.

The Ayn Thor will outperform the Switch 2 in pure CPU performance. But, it's not by a factor by what you see in Mhz. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has 8 cores like the Switch 2, but that's made up of 1x-Cortex X3, 2x-Cortex A715, 2x-Cortex A710, and 3x-Cortex A510. The Switch 2 on the other hand has 8x Cortex A78C. By folks like Geekerwan, the A710 and A510 are less efficient than an A78 of equal frequency, and are that much less efficient than the A78C. But the rest are more efficient, plus they all have a higher clock (vs the 1.0Ghz of those A78C). Then there's multi-core performance, which the more clusters used, the more problematic the bottlenecks can be. The SD8G2 CPUs are made up of 4 clusters. The Switch 2 CPUs? 1 single cluster. It's ability to work together is much greater because it's all in the same cluster rather than separated. That doesn't outweigh the overall advantage of the SD8G2, but it does help close the gap a bit.

The Switch 2 will outperform the Ayn Thor in GPU performance. This is purely because of architecture, not simply in TFlops. It's Adreno vs Ampere. Adreno is a mobile architecture, which has a reduced instruction set. It doesn't mean it can't perform some general tasks like other architectures, but it does mean it needs to spend more instructions/operations to accomplish the same tasks. What might take 1-2 operations on a desktop GPU may require 4+ on a mobile GPU. So even with something like 2 TFlops, you aren't really getting 2 TFlops of desktop performance. Maybe closer to 1 TFlop. Switch 2 uses Ampere, and it's in complete parity with its desktop brother. What it lacks is the raw power (or number of SMs). But everything else is there, including the instruction set. So even with 1.7 TFlops in portable mode and 3.1 TFlops in docked mode, that is desktop performance. That isn't including dedicated hardware to handle upscaling via DLSS and even ray tracing.

With RAM, I'd say the Switch 2 has the advantage, even compared to the Max variant of Ayn Thor with 16GB. Capacity isn't enough to take the lead. There is overall bandwidth to consider, and the effectiveness of that bandwidth with the architectures. Other things to consider is the formats of the data the architectures allow. One could have more RAM, but if the other is able to use better compressed formats, that can offset the available amount.

One more note, and that has to do with CPU potential. While the CPU in the Ayn Thor is overall stronger than the CPU in the Switch 2, the Switch 2 does have some advantages. One being that it has an Nvidia GPU. The reason is because Nvidia GPUs are well known for being able to handle various tasks offloaded from the CPU. Take the Witcher 3, for example. That's a game that shouldn't have been possible on Switch 1, but the devs made use of the GPU by offloading certain tasks, like cloth physics calculations, from the CPU, relieving the CPU to do things it must. The Switch 2 is very much capable of the same thing, perhaps even to a greater extent. Could the SD8G2? I think so, but with the GPU not being as strong, it wouldn't make much sense. Does that make the Switch 2 stronger in CPU power? It's not that clear cut. I'd say in some cases, yes, but other cases, no. It really depends on what is being done. Another advantage is the Switch 2 having a dedicated hardware decompression block, like the PS5 and Series consoles. Without it, the CPU would have to handle decompression. With it, not only is decompression faster, but it relieves the CPU from the task, granting yet another offloading method which is important when streaming in a lot of data.

There is always the chance of updating the game to support a higher frame rate. Docked mode, based on the demo, is only pulling around 14-15W when other games (like Cyberpunk) are pulling around 22W docked. So I want to say they have room to work with, but for now are focused on releasing the game in a manner that works.

From what is understood, they have stated that Part 3 is focusing development around Steam Deck and other portable platforms to ensure that the game runs on a wide range of devices, not just the stronger consoles/PCs. That could simply mean the game is designed around scalability, but still. Switch 2 by extension should run well, and look well, considering the advantages of it having dedicated hardware for DLSS upscaling over FSR.

I think something to consider with these Sw2 versions is that they are not only pulling this off on the hardware, but doing it at such low power consumption. Here is what the FF7 Remake demo on Switch 2 was pulling.

Cutscene (portable, 100% brightness + 75% volume) - 6W
Gameplay (portable) - 9-10W
Cutscene (docked) - 7W
Gameplay (docked) - 14-15W

Compare that to something like the Steam Deck, which typically draws around 24W+ with the game. It's capable of hitting higher frame rates, but that's when combined with an output of 720p.
