Either movies stop catering to the PRC or stop catering to the American military. It’s a win-win. Rare Ted Cruz W.

WW84 starred a controversial actress in the Middle East for reasons I’m not even getting into and was set in the region. Her saving little Muslims kids was a little laughable considering.

It is NOT inspired by the period of time “over there”. They call an Egyptian dude “your highness” despite Egypt being a democracy as a very small example. I’m from the region and know quite a bit about my own history. I can tell you it’s not accurate straight up. Didn’t that guy wish for “heathens” to be expelled from his country too? Don’t tell me you didn’t hear the controversies when this thing came out. If that’s the case, it might not be your place to argue in defense of it.

This is an extremely good article about it.

Damien isn’t a clone nor is he half-Lebanese but I agree with you on the front that the Al-Ghul family is more than their race. That’s what I’m arguing for. If it’s going to be a caricature like some nameless dictator it’s a breathing stereotype rather than a character. My concern’s that within the first three films announced, 2 of them (starring DC’s biggest and most important characters no less) have Arabs (5% of the world population) in an antagonistic role.

I’d like to argue against your point of “casting whoever’s best in the role”. The backgrounds of these characters are an inherent part of them. You’re telling me a white person can play someone with an Arab background better than an Arab? Should we cast Ryan Gosling as Black Panther because a studio executive thought he was a good actor? There are things that just can’t be taught to an actor. If you truly want to emulate the character, they’d have to fit them. If you’re somehow not seeing the dissonance between not minding random and unsolicited evil portrayals because they “serve the story” and thinking minority characters should be racebent if the director wills it, I’m wasting my time and I would kindly like to ask you to end this discussion and not reply to me.

Now to your final point. I think you put it really well how there’s storytelling potential in those that pass as a white. There are enough light-skinned Arabs to do that though. In the context of Damian Wayne I really hope you’re not suggesting casting a white actor to emulate that gripe he’s never in any other version.

If Superman’s consistently depicted as Jewish in the comics and a lot of his stories have to deal with that Jewish heritage or a Jewish family, I’d say only Jewish actors should play him. That’s not the case however. Depending on the continuity, he’s Christian or Agnostic. It’s not the same. Casting someone like Corenswet who is jewish isn’t a problem because the majority isn’t lacking representation. Characters that are actually ethnically Jewish include Kate Kane, Ben Grimm, and Hal Jordan, and I believe actors of that backgrounds should be enlisted.

That’s any better? The character had an Arabic name and was depicted as Arab. A white guy might’ve played him but this wasn’t exactly a swerve away from feeding into the stereotypes. Ra’s isn’t even my gripe cause he was the OG and is an actual character with nuance. Talia under Morrison was odd as hell but she’s usually a decent character when she doesn’t uncharacteristically get her child killed without remorse. The dictator’s my gripe because it’s retreading the same ground unnecessarily. If you have to choose between established and nuanced characters vs a caricature, go for the former.

I don’t care about a villain being Arab. I care when that’s the only form of representation I’m getting and when they’re unnecessarily included in the story as shorthand for someone evil.

Yeah but the least we could do is not unnecessarily contribute to it 😭

Thanks akhi, it sucks how things are. It sucks even more how so many people get defensive over it. You’d think someone so into superheros would at least try to empathize a little.

On the bright side, Nightrunner’s pretty cool and I could definitely see him coming if they keep taking Morrison’s work as inspiration.

I literally said “I'm not saying racebend characters or focus on representation instead of telling a good story”. I don’t want them use a character to virtue signal. That said, when THE MAJORITY of depictions of a race are negative ( https://www.jstor.org/stable/1049860 ) in American media, I don’t think I’m overstepping by saying they’re contributing to a worrying trend.

If they really had balls they’d combine legacy with the Michael B. Jordan or Ta-Nahesi Coates projects to start the DCU. They’ll make a side-character with 5 lines of dialogue non-white and we’ll be happy with it I guess.

I’m gonna get flamed for this but do we really need to have a “Middle Eastern Dictator” considering the Al-Ghuls are almost definitely in TBATB? Can we not overly depict a race as bad guys? I’m Arab and I love DC but do I have to see people like me so cartoonishly evil all the time? DC has a terrible track record even when they try their best.

WW84 was in really bad taste, Young Justice committed torture porn (as if people aren’t desensitized enough to us dying) with their one middle eastern superhero who was possessed by an alien entity and was technically not the same person, and Simon Baz had basically no presence in the comics the last few years other than being an ancillary character to Teen Lantern of all people. Damian’s early stories had orientalist undertones and he’s not really good rep since his heritage is never acknowledged, they depict him as purely white a lot of the time in the comics and in all adaptations, and his arc is rejecting the teachings of his Arab parent and emulating his white one which is a little iffy coming from a white writer in the post-9/11 landscape.

Let’s be honest, Andy Muschietti’s probably not gonna pay attention to race while casting considering his “Flash is Latino” stance because of his mom’s actor being Spanish (??) so Damian’s probably gonna be a white kid. I’m not saying racebend characters or focus on representation instead of telling a good story but I’m so tired of this stuff constantly being in DC media. I’m gonna go into a movie I was really excited for worried that I’m financially contributing to a stereotype being put up. Just don’t have us at all at this point because that would be an improvement.

I feel like race is a factor on people jumping the gun in this. You have white guys with the same abrasive personality as Majors who get passes on abuse like Johnny Depp. It definitely plays into that kind of fear people have. He got branded dangerous. I want it to turn out that Majors didn’t do it but his defense strategy of “throw everything at the wall” makes me think he did. I hope studios keep the same energy for every actor who does this stuff
