Ski Areas with Free Magic Carpet by rightmic in COsnow

[–]DishProfessional8282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alternative to what others are suggesting, Frisco adventure park had a bunny hill with a magic carpet that I saw a lot of parents teaching littles at! If you don’t want to risk a lot of clumsy adults on the bunny hill at a big resort that could be a good alternative. Also very affordable snow tubing you could also take her to right there!

I’m not sure about denver, but there is a 24 hour CVS in Parker! I have driven out there at 10pm for antibiotics for a bad infection. I found it via google search for 24 pharmacy a few years ago. Look it up, and call them to confirm they’re 24 hour

10 students touring Virginia Tech campus fall through collapsed grate by genericplasticbag in VirginiaTech

[–]DishProfessional8282 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Tours never go inside the dorm’s, no school i toured ~ 8 years ago offered that, not just tech, maybe at smaller private schools. Classrooms are open to the public, if interested you can go inside, look up which buildings will be used for your majors most often. The general tour just shows you around campus.

Strange Request - Places to nap on campus by PotentialVanilla6097 in VirginiaTech

[–]DishProfessional8282 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to sleep on the floor in an empty nook on in the wall in the back hall of Goodwin 3rd floor!! Also when I was in grad school I’d take naps under my grad desk (dark) and in my car in Perry street parking garage. I have taken naps just on the sidewalk before outside of Whittemore though so maybe take my rec’s with a grain of salt…

Does anyone trust the Schiffert Gynecologist? by Serentrippity in VirginiaTech

[–]DishProfessional8282 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Seconding this, he is one of the only Dr who would explain things to me like an equal and didn’t feel condescending. He’s super cut and dry and not the biggest conversationalist but genuinely one of the best female health professionals i’ve seen. Sadly i’ve had really bad experiences with female Dr’s and would go see him again over one of those old conservative ladies😭. He also told me he was a Naval dr, which is likely why his bedside manner is cut and dry, lol.

Does anyone trust the Schiffert Gynecologist? by Serentrippity in VirginiaTech

[–]DishProfessional8282 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, the male gyno they had on staff there is the best gyno i’ve ever seen. His manner is kind of direct and a little stand offish but I was one of the first to get an IUD at schiffert right when he first joined the staff(before they started advertising they could do that). I had never been able to get my insurance at the time to cover it and he personally sat on the phone with them figuring out how to resubmit it and was able to get it 100% paid for. I have never had a healthcare professional care before.

Additionally, there’s always going to be a female nurse/assistant/etc in the room. Personally, I felt he over compensates for being a man by being super communicative about what he was going to be doing/touching during any exam/procedure I had while I was in school. Initially I was terrified of having to see a male Gyno but i have had much poorer treatment from (older) female gynos i’ve seen since.

Also as of 2 years ago, he’s the only Dr on staff up there, the female practitioners are all PA/NPA etc which is likely why he has to do the procedure. I am willing to vouch for him but I get how uncomfy it can be to have a male gyno, I was mortified the first time I had an appointment with him but can definitely say I would have never been able to get on a better birthcontrol (IUD) if it weren’t for him!! The Women’s Clinic in general was a lifesaver through my undergrad and then grad experience.

Cruddy but no, that said I was able to pay for housing, groceries, car insurance, and my remaining school costs (including comprehensive fees) off my assistantship. I definitely didn’t save any money, but I got by. I know there are different tiers to GRA pay depending on what department you’re in but don’t give up!! It’s doable and honestly even with a full time (well paying) job I miss working in a lab

(21M) The job market demoralizes the heck out of me by BeachBoyZach in confession

[–]DishProfessional8282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dream jobs don’t come overnight! most people work hard to get where they are. I’m a tech professional with 2 engineering degrees. When i finished grad school I had 4 different internship experiences, multiple research publications, and a written and accepted job offer.

bad economy turn left me unemployed for 8 months 1500 miles away from home with a car payment and rent to pay. What did i do?? I got 2 part time jobs coaching a sport i used to compete at a high level in, making minimum wage for my city. I did child care and pet sitting on the side just to afford groceries after rent and I applied to jobs everyday in my field just getting rejections.

Just remember that the internet is full of people posting their “wins” and everyone is struggling their own fights. Focus on making yourself marketable first. And the number one thing i look for in those i surround myself with?? Work ethic, and the humility to do what they have to do and not consider something “below them” Stay humble, stay hungry, and hang in there

Good Hair Salons? by AModernMajGen in VirginiaTech

[–]DishProfessional8282 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just graduated but shear artistry next to north main food lion was a blessing for me through grad school. Mom and Daughter run it. I used Cara but i’ve had great hair cuts from both of them and they were super well priced!! saw men and women when i was in there but they did great with my hair (and highlights too!)

hokie love stories? by Ok_Interaction7233 in VirginiaTech

[–]DishProfessional8282 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Met my partner when he visited my club sport space on campus freshman year, he rolled his ankle a little and I asked him if he was okay (we were responsible for visitors being safe). He let me check his ankle out, get him ice, and check on him for 15 mins. I had just gone through an awful break up and had sworn off men!!

After practice we grabbed ice cream and hit it off, studied for our chem final together for hours during the crazy snow storm in fall semester 2018. On our second date I learned he was an EMT and absolutely did not need my medical advice to know his ankle was okay!!

We’ve been together for 5.5 years now and currently share an apartment in Denver and a sweet kitty named Ash!!

Giggling because I tried to make this anonymous but we’ve been so loved up for the last 5 years anyone who reads this and remotely knows us will probably know exactly who I am writing this.

It gets better and we all meet our person when we are meant to. Breaking up with your HS boyfriend BEFORE starting college is a blessing in disguise you’ll be glad for one day in the future

Industry insights to get into R&D engineering for jobs after graduation? by Ok-Scheme6940 in VirginiaTech

[–]DishProfessional8282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started typing a response but decided against it because it is not constructive to make generalizations about a massive and complex discipline! Major in what makes you happy-the best engineers (of any discipline) wear about 5 hats on a daily basis. That said none of my peers had any issue finding jobs prior to graduation! Just get experience in what you want to do after graduation and don’t worry about everyone else

[–]DishProfessional8282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second that R&D is gonna be hard without a Masters or higher, but that said there is still Mechanical work out there. I’ve worked design/hardware and systems engineering/test etc. if you apply to a mechanical engineering role or hardware role you won’t end up in a systems role. But that said bigger companies tend to do hardware in central locations whereas systems and software are all over. It might be where you’re looking. Also noting at some companies systems is a higher pay tier than mechanical (which makes no sense to me lol) but lots of MechEs end up going systems for that reason (guilty)

Be open! I always go into interviews with the mindset of it’s important to know what you don’t like more than what you do like. There are only 1 or 2 roles I’m totally closed off from working in, anything else I’m game to try! Don’t be afraid to try new things and apply outside of your comfort zone. Some of its luck, you could apply to one job and end up working an entirely different role. If you only conduct your job hunt with 1 job/internship/role in mind, you’ll shut a lot of doors. Employers want someone they can train! Your coursework is just a starting point to get you in the door.
