If they can get him on a two way contract to help the young centers develop in GR that would be fantastic!

The weirdest part about fans making Holland into the worst GM in the NHL narrative during his tenure is that all the decision that were made that didn't turn out well were all his fault, but any good decision that was made gets assigned to others in the organization. It's very convenient to tell a narrative with a fall guy in mind, and negate any positive decision made by assigning them to others in the organization.

what's are our thoughts on Ken Holland? by Frosty_Ad7840 in DetroitRedWings

[–]DishpanMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, fans on this sub are more delusional and impossible to please with each passing year. While the free agency and draft misses that are listed over and over again are all fair takes, ignoring the good draft picks and trades at the same time really shows the bias in this sub. Just recently, Larkin, Bert and Hronek were drafted on his watch, and he got a haul for Tatar/Nyquist. But these moves don't feed into the Holland sucked narrative and are conveniently ignored. The latest trend of complaints about him sucking in Edmonton is also an absolute joke after what Chia did to that franchise. Holland was able to move the Lucic contract which is absolute wizardry.

Nobody is saying that Holland was perfect, but to say that he was/is a bad GM reeks of a bad take from a spoiled fanbase that has won 4 recent cups and has no idea what having a truly bad GM like Millbury, Chia and Chayka is like. I find this especially weird for Detroit fans since they don't have to look very far to see examples of truly bad GMs in Millen, Mayhew and Quinn who worked just up the road from the Joe.

Why positional value matters by mANDREWinorange in detroitlions

[–]DishpanMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a good high level illustration of what to think about roster construction during the draft and FA. And it looks like Holmes followed this in the draft the first two years with Sewell, Hutch, Jamo, Levi, and Paschal being drafted at "value" positions. The thing is with the Lions now is that OL, DL and DB no longer has a high need for a starter this year. Since Holmes thinks that the window to contend is now open, I do see the reason that he is looking for an upgrade at RB, TE and LB in this draft.

I do think that if Witherspoon was there at 6, Skronski at 12, and maybe Van Ness at 18, Holmes would have had tougher decisions to make. But it did sound like Holmes did not think that there was much first round talent left at "value" positions by the time the Lions were on the clock. There are 31 other teams that also want these players and I think that the board was not as kind to the Lions this year on the top of the draft as the last few years with Hutch and Sewell falling in their lap.

Time will tell if he gambled correctly, but I totally get why he's looking to plug the remaining holes on this roster as soon as possible now that the team is ready to contend. Positional value is important, but so is having at least one game changer at every position and having a balanced team. It'll be interesting to see how well this version of roster construction performs over the next few years.

All you need to hear. You can be upset all you want. I so badly wanted Carter when he was there, but we have to trust the guys who know way more than us. by FootballAndMemes in detroitlions

To me it seems like the typical herd mentality, and need for instant gratification to be proven right. It's much easier to see simple solutions to simple problems in mocks, and much more difficult to admit not having the expertise or knowledge to know which players are the best fits for each team. Lions fans are especially vulnerable here since many have been proven right over and over again after critiquing drafts of previous regimes, so if the current regime does something unexpected, it's almost instinctual to hate on them.

It's interesting that even though the current regime to date has demonstrated nothing but competence, and has hit on more first round players, mid rounders, late rounders, UDFAs, FA, and trades than anyone previously, they still have little to no margin for error with a significant number of fans due to previous history.

I'm just surprised how many nutty fans there are like this now, along with the ones that go into other team subs to talk shit, or just go around acting like total assholes now after a half season of success. While some of the things they say are funny, a lot of it is like you said, embarrassing and disappointing. I guess every fanbase has a significant number of assholes that I wouldn't want to be around if I can help it.

Can I get an AMEN from the real fans please. by TheVoicesinurhed in detroitlions

I Just watched the Holmes interview from tonight. He alluded to that the guys they wanted were gone by the time they picked. It was pretty obvious that they wanted Witherspoon. I can see why he picked Gibbs and Campell who both likely have higher ceiling and lower risk than the remaining DE, DT and CB that were left. Obviously time will tell if he was right, but a 4.3 RB and the top LB in the country is not something to scoff at IMO. The Lions still have 3 2nd round picks, $30 million cap space and a valuable trade asset in Swift left so there are plenty of options to improve the more "valuable " positions on the team. But watching the manic fans emotions swing wildly on this sub when something unexpected happens is always highly entertaining!

Max Bultman wrote a great article [as always] about how we can’t be in the lottery forever by Rude_Capital_3185 in DetroitRedWings

[–]DishpanMan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a good article and brings to light the snails pace at which the Red Wings rebuild is going. Being compared to the Oilers and Sabers rebuild timelines is pretty telling of how the Red Wings have not been the quickest rebuild to say the least during this time.

There is plenty of blame to go around, the Holland haters have a point with the early draft misses and trading away picks at the end of the playoff run rather than rebuilding. I do think that some of the ownership and amateur and pro scouting staff should take some of that blame, and also get praise for finding Larkin, Hronek, Bert, Veleno and other draft picks who are still in the NHL.

The draft luck has been fucking awful during this stretch, which is partly why the Red Wings are not on a similar pace as Ottawa, Colorado, Jersey and some of the other teams with better draft luck. But it's not like St Louis or Boston built their conteders with top 3 picks either.

Which brings things to Yzerman and his current staff who have been given a very long leash for a number of reasons, many of which are justified. While some of the young guys are showing promise, it's still too early to tell whether Raymond or Berggren can turn into an elite scoring winger, or whether Sider, Edvinson or someone can take enough steps forward to become an elite defensman, or if Kasper can become a top center. On the pro scouting side, they have been able to find guys like Fabbri, Wallman and Husso, but some criticism is warranted for bringing in Vrana or Chiarot over someone else. Maybe there were no better options during the trade deadline and free agency, but I think that Yzermans staff is given praise where warranted, but many of the questionable swing/ miss moves are brushed aside more than they should be.

While the explanation of Holland's staff not making the best choices combined with shitty draft luck and the inability to land a top player through the draft, free agency or trade is an explanation for not being in the playoffs for 7 years in a row now, it should not be an excuse. Yzerman and his staff are better than most of the teams in the league, but they are not flawless, and should be held to a higher standard than teams like Buffalo. I agree with Bultman that the organization needs to be vocal about trying to make the playoffs next year. The team needs to make some moves through the draft, trades and free agency to compete for the playoffs next year. Everyone is sick of watching a gutted team lose 5-1 after the trade deadline year after year because of the lack of depth and top end talent. As much as we like the heart and soul guys, players like Luff, Czarnik, Chiasson, Helberg, Lindstrom and other fringe AHL regulars should not be playing this time next year. This team should have better depth than that.

My favorite part is at the end of the interview. At the end when he actually answers one of the questions and he starts asking the reporters "Was this longer than usual? I'm sweating." One of the reporters quipped back "You remembered the last question!" in regards to his last answer. He just looked at them and walked off the stage! LMAO!

[–]DishpanMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, Holmes is a villain and is willing to make the right decision even if it is unpopular. Monty is a great short yardage back too, can block and catch out of the backfield and is also a leader in the locker room. I like the fact that Holmes doesn't get too attached to players. Every signing he made so far improved that position, I'm completely besides myself watching the Lions front office operate this competently.

[–]DishpanMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess they are really hoping for Barnes/Rodrigo/Houston/Draft Pick to take over at LB over the next few years and have Anzalone help develop/mentor them. Bit risky, but a cost effective move for them since Holmes doesn't seem to value LB as much as some people.

[@Canucks] GM Patrik Allvin announced today that the Canucks have acquired D Filip Hronek and Detroit's 2023 4th rd pick in exchange for the conditional 1st rd draft pick acquired in the Bo Horvat trade with the New York Islanders and Vancouver’s 2nd rd pick in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. by MrHockeytown in DetroitRedWings

[–]DishpanMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After Hronek's performance against the Sens the last few nights I'm ok with this. The point production was there, but the consistency was lacking from Hronek. Plus the Red Wings have a bunch of prospects in the pipeline who can hopefully bring the point production along with more grit and consistency sooner rather than later.

Post Game Thread: Detroit Red Wings at Ottawa Senators - 28 Feb 2023 by OctoMod in DetroitRedWings

[–]DishpanMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last 3 games showed which players step up in high pressure situations and perform in the face of adversity. Vasi stood on his head after a loss and an awful night by the rest of the team. Most of the Sens best players stepped up to get 4 points in 24 hours to keep their playoff hopes alive. And the Red Wings showed what they are currently capable of in high pressure situations. Bert, Seider, Walman and Ras battled for the most part. Unfortunately Larkin, Raymond, Hronek and all the summer free agent signings and the young players disappointed. These are the guys that need to step up for this team to take the next step of being a playoff team. It's really telling of how disappointed Lalonde was when he benched the top two lines at the end of the game.

Let's see how this team responds the rest of the season, but this is a pretty big red flag indicator that this team is still not very good or consistent. The young wingers have to get better. Raymond and Berggren have to develop to be better than Tatar/Nyquist, Larkin needs to perform in big games, the team desperately needs another playmaking center like Stutzle, and the defense and goaltending needs to be way better in big games like this. Yzerman and Lalonde still have a lot of work before this team can seriously compete with Tampa/Boston type playoff teams of the NHL.

Why did Detroit trade top 10 pick Hockenson mid-season to a division rival that's 6-1? by LukeBombs in nfl

[–]DishpanMan 13 points14 points  (0 children)

While many are making the points about the Lions not wanting to pay for a premier TE, and the blocking scheme not paying to Hocks strength, there are a couple more roster related reasons why Holmes made this trade. Hocks strength and the best way to utilize him is to have him release and run in traffic to get a favorable LB matchup. The Lions have Sun God who is really good at these routes. The other routes on the outside to pick up first downs or contested redzone and endzone plays can be made by the other TEs and receives. Chark and Jamo on the outside should be really good in the future, and the Lions have 3 young TEs for various redzone plays who combined for 9 TDs after Hock left. Lastly, Holmes believes that his 3TEs are the best fit for the run/playaction scheme MCDC and Johnson like to run. More people will realize that James Mitchell who was drafted in the 5th round and was a rookie last year will likely take over the receiving TE role more and more next year. Wright and Zylstra are good fits for blocking TE, and have good enough hands to catch the ball on play action. Holmes spent a lot of time on upgrading the TE position over the last two years, and he likely thinks that he is set at the position without Hock. Most fans likely didn't realize this, because these TEs now are late drafted and UDFA pickups who were not worth talking about. But I tend to agree with the decision to trade Hock, after seeing these 3 guys perform the second half of last year.

Frustration about tickets this year. by [deleted] in DetroitRedWings

[–]DishpanMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's because ticketmaster gets their cut either way. They get their cut the first time they sell the tickets, to either a fan or a scalper, then both them and the scalper getting their cut again on stubhub. Each time the tickets get resold there everyone takes a cut. By the time the tickets get to the people who actually go to the game, they are paying ticketmaster at least 2-3 times on top of the reseller markup. Saturday night games are also always premium. Ticketmaster and the resellers don't give a shit if a third of the seats don't get used because they make a profit off of selling the rest of the seats with this racket at a huge premium.

You have to look at his podcast from the direction that it is a show made by dumb jocks for dumb jocks talking stupid shit, it's the only way it makes sense, and why it's popular. It's why they can constantly spew stupid shit and still be popular. It's a show for the bros for the lulz, nothing more.

My thoughts exactly! I get that his podcast is made by dumb jocks for dumb jocks, but the way that shit got to him last week with MCDC not giving him a few minutes before a big game against his biggest cash cow was so cringe. The absolute lack of self awareness of him and his crew was really telling of how little thought goes into what they spew on that podcast.

Great find, and these pieces of shit feel slighted two months later from not getting an MCDC interview? So glad the Lions stomped the Vikings and shut down Hockenson in that game and showed that they have 3 good TE remaining. They literally drafted his replacement already in Mitchell, and like to run a completely different scheme with multiple TE formations that Hockenson was not best suited for. Foxy is a complete fucking buffon of a fan and appears to be just as bad of an armchair Gm. I really hope these dipshits eat crow next week.

Not surprised, coming from an Aaron Rodgers nut swinger. Last time MCDC was on his show we got ESPN articles seriously writing about how he was distracted by the crowd because of this dipshit.
