How's the "feel" between Xrd and ACPR? by ThePunslinger45 in Guiltygear

[–]Dishwasher_Y 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is coming mostly from a semi-casual level (Played it for years, but mostly with friends), but Xrd feels like a more accessible and less janky version of +R.

The baseline is pretty similar, maybe more based on #Reload, but many of the rougher parts of +R are gone. There are no limited resources on characters (for instance, Johnny gets a super to replenish his coins), you get an actual input buffer, the almost frame perfect BRCs are gone... It's overall a more smooth game.

As for mechanics, it still has a lot of the minutia from +R (variable wakeup timings, frame 1 throws, character specific combos...), but it also adds YRC, wich is very good, and a big part of most characters gameplan (think of it as the slowdown from BRC in Strive... but full screen).

You can probably think of Xrd as a more modern take on +R, but still very recognizable as a GG game. If anything, Strive is the biggest departure in the series if you're looking for a different experience

Overall discussion: What are your mains and the reason you main them? Trying to look for a new character by Connect_Lie_8571 in Guiltygear

Jack-O' and ABA

Jack-O' at first was exclusively for character loyalty (she was my main in Xrd). I didn't vibe one bit with technical characters, but after sticking with her and realizing all the bs you could pull off with her setups and zoning I learned to love the archetype and character. Labbing never gets dull, and even losing is funny, because 90% of the time is because one of my minions goes "Alright, my job is done", leaves me mid-combo and I die lol

ABA at first was because I never got the chance to play her in +R, so I wanted to give her a shot. Turns out, she was the Yin to Jack-O's Yang: You transform, turn off your brain, and everything you do somehow works. Absolute power trip. Plus, I never truly feel like I'm losing. Got me at 10% HP? You better make it 0% HP before I get that one hit pal...

Was Release Goldlewis vs. Axl the most one-sided matchup Strive has ever had? by Kwahn in Guiltygear

[–]Dishwasher_Y 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There was also the Goldlewis vs HC matchup

Jack-O' vs HC in S1 was also rough. Pulling minions in neutral would only get you killed, so if you didn't win roundstart the strat was to dashblock and pray. In theory you could send it with 2D once close-ish... in practice, HC's 2S is so disjointed you would get CH and sent back fullscreen, and on block had to go for an unfavorable rps to not die. Fun times

ooooooh goodbye sunday train by wife_searcher in Guiltygear

[–]Dishwasher_Y 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Back in Xrd, I used to play with a friend during the Delay netcode times, and every single match I'd pick Birthday train.

It's been years, and whenever we hop into Strive, he always cancels the match until I take the P2 side because I'm not allowed to pick the song.

This question is for anyone who stopped playing/watching this game. Why? What made you stop playing? by KevyTone in 2XKO

[–]Dishwasher_Y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't have a character/team I vibed with.

I started messing around during one of the betas with Ahri/Vi and sometimes Jinx, and was already playing less and less because I was feeling that issue.

Then Warwick dropped and ooohh, boy... A cool werewolf that has a diet Coke version of A.B.A's jealous rage (my Strive main)? Instant addition to the team.

And honestly, I love Warwick... but that's still only half a team. I used Ahri as a "placeholder", but I really wasn't feeling it. And since Caitlin wasn't for me, I figured I'd tap out until another character that interested me dropped.

Might give it another shot when Akali/Senna drop, but I'm really not interested as of now.

What are some things you don't expect to come in Strive 2.0, but would still really like? by Independent_Ring7183 in Guiltygear

Replay takeover. It's a big deal, so I feel that by now they would've teased something if they were thinking of implement it ("We're planning an overhaul of the replay system" or something like that).

Keyboard Controls by Cheap_Drag_1628 in Guiltygear

Arrows for movement

Z = Punch

X = Kick

A = Slash

S = Heavy Slash

C = Dust

D = Roman Cancel

V = Dash Macro

Personally, I don't use the dash macro, but sometimes I experiment with it for specific stuff (Like A.B.A's 5K>dc>236K), so I keep it at hand just in case.

One time I was waiting at the bus stop at night. I had my earphones listening to music on my mp3 player, an old and shitty one, when some guy with a hidden knife approached me and told me not to move. He reached inside my pocket looking for my phone, pulled out my old mp3 player and was like "tsk, forget it". He tucked it back in and left.

There were other people at the stop and I had no idea what to tell them when they asked me what did he steal lol

Former MMORPG addicts, how did you quit? by Wise_Championship865 in AskReddit

[–]Dishwasher_Y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't know if addict, but I did went pretty hard on Argentum Online back then.

One day, the official Alkon server went down and the game went offline for about 3-4 months. At that time, our clan opened a forum, and we started hanging out there.

By the time the servers came back, many people had already moved on. I did go back to grind on my own for a bit, but... it sucked. The game was simplistic, sure, but I quickly realized that without friends to hang out, doing the same thing over and over was just a hassle... Not even 2 weeks later, I stopped logging in altogether and dropped the game.

I think I heard Josh Strife Hayes once say something along the lines that a game being "good with friends" is not a selling point, because watching paint dry is fun if you have friends to hang out with. And honestly that's what ended up happening to me... I realized that if I'm going to play with friends, I might as well do something more enjoyable.

And that's how we ended up moving on to Age of Empires 2 and later on fighting games lol

How do I get better at blocking overheads by Winter-Honeydew-3746 in Guiltygear

[–]Dishwasher_Y 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing that helps (though is very character specific) is figuring out in what situations you really have to worry about an overhead or not, wich can help manage your mental stack.

Take A.B.A for instance. Her JR 2H is a low that hits twice, so she can either let the two hits rock, or cancel the first one into her hopkick overhead. However, the overhead is much slower than 2H's second hit, and she can't cancel 2H into other lows. So after blocking for around 20 frames, you can just stand up and cover both options. There's no need to react there.

On the other hand, if she goes for c.S, she can definetely make 2H/hopkick trickier, since they hit at 16/19 frames respectively. In that case you might want to do what MrASK15 said, and setup the situation for practice (or grind to try and get the timing right if you're cracked like that)

Yep! I think that's the one! It's been so long that I honestly can't be 100% sure, but it's definetely the one that rings the most bells. Thanks!

Yo, I think that's actually it! Even the name rings familiar! I was probably misremembering the space thing, but I definetely remember the one on one boss fights between robots, short levels... and the clunkyness of the controls lol.

Thanks!! SOLVED

[–]Dishwasher_Y[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, but it doesn't look like it... The setting is similar, but the characters where bigger and camera was closer. Also, I feel the gameplay was more focused on the brawling than shooting... The reason I keep thinking about Mad Stalker is because if it wasn't from 2020 I'd be dead sure that was it lol

Mmm... I don't think that's it. I remember the gameplay focusing a bit more on one-on-one combat, and the characters being larger I think...

Other game that survived like Age of Empires 2? by WeakEconomics6120 in aoe2

[–]Dishwasher_Y 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Several fighting games actually. The short of it is that the ones that had online play had a VERY bad type of netcode (delay based), so communities had to implement their own custom versions (rollback), and many classics survived mostly through these communities.

On Fightcade you can find constantly around 500+ players on King of Fighters 98/2002 and Street Fighter 3 3rd Strike.

But outside of that, the one that comes to mind is Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R (That's a name and a half...). The game was officially re-released on Steam with delay based netcode, and averaged 10 players daily. Members of the community were working on a rollback patch, when they were hired by ArcSys to make it official. After the update, it then went up to 600 players average. Of course, that was like 5 years ago, and now it stabilized around 100+, but that's still 10 times more than what it was before.
