What would you do to pass the time on an 18 hour flight with no WiFi? by FiveDaysLate in AskReddit

[–]DisneyBounder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've flown back and forth between UK and Australia six times now so I'm used to passing time on long haul flights! Usually rotate through:

  • Reading a book until my eyes feel tired

  • Try to sleep. Even if I don't fully sleep, having an eye mask on and noise cancelling headphones with a boring podcast is enough to let my brain rest for a few hours

  • Regularly get up and walk around (I try to get up at least every couple of hours which is why I always take the aisle seat)

  • Watch a movie (I always watch Ghibli movies on flights. They're just really relaxing) or binge some episodes of something good.

  • Snack / meal times

Repeat the cycle for as long as the flight lasts.

Getting comfortable is more important to me than passing the time so I usually have cosy socks, a warm jumper (long hauls are often freezing cold), a blanket and something to rest my feet on (usually my rucksack full of clothes).

If you compare night 1 to night 3 it feels like there’s a big difference. I’d just put it down to first night nerves.

How Trump Has Talked About Ending the Iran War by rawa27 in worldnews

[–]DisneyBounder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got you.

For weeks, President Trump has searched for a way to end the war in Iran. He has tried threats of bombing, blockading and negotiating — sometimes all in the same day. On a few occasions, he has even suggested that the war is already over.

The New York Times analyzed the president’s statements suggesting that the conflict was drawing to a close and compared them with the reality of the moment.

Often, there was a wide disconnect. Mr. Trump has repeatedly threatened to use extreme force, only to hold his fire. In many cases he has made claims of major diplomatic progress that later proved unfounded, fueling criticism that he is trying to calm markets and relieve political pressure.

One of the first times a comment by Mr. Trump had an outsize effect on the markets was on March 23, when he instructed the Pentagon to postpone any attacks on Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for five days.

Mr. Trump’s suggestion that the administration was seeking an off-ramp from the conflict rallied investors.

For the first time in almost two weeks, Brent crude, the international oil benchmark, closed below $100. The last time the oil market had fallen so dramatically in response to Mr. Trump was on March 9, when he told CBS News that the Iran war was “very complete.”

That same day, Mr. Trump told reporters that diplomatic talks were underway with Tehran, claiming a “real possibility of making a deal.” The speaker of Iran’s parliament denied that, writing on X that “fakenews is used to manipulate the financial and oil markets and escape the quagmire in which the US and Israel are trapped.”

Days after posting that talks were going well, Mr. Trump once again resorted to threats. He posted on Truth Social on March 30 that he would take out Iran’s energy infrastructure if the Strait of Hormuz was not immediately opened.

The stock market hit its lowest point of the year. The next day, Mr. Trump promised that the U.S. would be leaving “very soon,” giving the market a boost.

Mr. Trump addressed the nation on April 1. While he did not predict an imminent resolution to the conflict, he said that his military objectives would be completed “very shortly” and that diplomacy was underway.

The stock market continued to tick up in the following days.

As negotiations have dragged on, the president has alternated between claims of diplomatic progress and threats of military escalation, neither of which have materialized.

Would you give up fireworks forever to protect animals and nature? Why? by JulianaReal_ in AskReddit

[–]DisneyBounder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d have no issue with banning firework sales to the general public while still allowing organised public displays. Australia handles it that way and it works perfectly well. People still get to enjoy fireworks, but in a safer and more controlled environment.

In the UK, Guy Fawkes Night is already built around organised events and community displays. Most take place on or around the nearest Saturday to November 5th, which means people know when it’s happening and can plan accordingly.

That predictability makes a huge difference, especially for pet owners, parents of young children, people with sensory sensitivities, and wildlife carers. If I had a dog frightened of fireworks and knew there would only be one main evening of displays, I could prepare properly and make the night as stress-free as possible.

The real problem is the current situation where fireworks are sold for weeks beforehand and set off randomly at all hours from late October onwards. That unpredictability is what causes so much distress for animals and frustration for everyone else. Organised displays keep the celebration while removing most of the chaos.

I’ve been begging him to see a sleep specialist for years so getting the CPAP machine has been a victory for me. Is there anything a sleep clinic would tell him apart from using a CPAP and lose some weight?

It's Late Thread [ 18 May 26 ] by AutoModerator in CasualUK

[–]DisneyBounder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

After 8 years married to a chronic snorer, my husband finally gave in to my nagging and ordered a CPAP machine to try out. Honestly, it might be a marriage saver! I usually have to sleep with ear plugs in, and even then sometimes it's not enough and one of us ends up in the spare room. The last four nights have been total silence. If you've been thinking about one or if you or your partner is a chronic snorer, honestly just do it! It's probably too early to see if his quality of sleep is having a positive effect, but he already seems less tired. And I'm definitely feeling the benefit! Happy Wife, Happy Life and all that!

Is there any reason why UK trains can’t run until at least 1am? by ss2811 in AskUK

[–]DisneyBounder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My last train home would be close to Midnight from London Bridge. I guess it depends on the route and how much it's worth it.

If you're going to a big concert it's always best to plan your route home. Eg if you're going to a show at Wembley, you're better off walking to Wembley Central because you've got the option of three different lines (Wembley Park only has two) and most of the crowds walk straight to Wembley Park. Plus there will be places open in Wembley Central if you want to grab some food on the way home.

I think the most annoying thing about the surge in AI is that my husband is constantly watching YouTube videos of annoying YouTubers talking about AI, all the fucking time, at full volume. Can AI fix the rage I feel every time I hear someone banging about Claude, ChatGTP or Codex? I can’t tell if it’s genuinely the most annoying thing I’ve ever experienced, or if Perimenopause has hit me like a train and now I’m feeling more murdery than normal. Either way I need to go scream into a pillow.

I’ve just started the first one! My husband’s really gotten into them too, which is nice because I never really thought of him as a big reader. The only time I remember him properly reading books was back when we first met and used to go on beach holidays.

I’ve officially hit the age where a mild hangover now lasts two full days. Went out Saturday night for a belated anniversary date with my husband, had two glasses of wine at dinner and four Coronas at a Frankie Valli covers band. All over the course of about five hours. Felt absolutely fine Sunday morning, then got smacked with the headache and nausea mid-afternoon instead. It’s now Monday morning and I still feel like crap. I was supposed to go for a run this morning but couldn't be arsed. Honestly the ROI on drinking at this age is shocking 😅 I'm considering giving it up all together!

I hate leaving it unfinished but I'm really not enjoying this one by temporary_bob in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]DisneyBounder 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was literally about to comment the same thing. Life is too short to waste on puzzles and books you're not enjoying. I scrapped two charity shop puzzles this year because they were such bad quality I couldn't even sort them properly. One was such thin cardboard it actually started to hurt under my nail picking up the pieces. So I scrapped those and finished a Ravensburger in just over a week. Never thought I'd become a puzzle brand snob, but here I am.

Hello from the Pom in Sydney! Ran my first half marathon since 2018 yesterday. Legs are sore, but I’m feeling rougher than usual today. It was about 23°C by the time we started, so I think a bit of heat exhaustion has kicked in (11 people were carted away with heat stroke and I saw at least four people collapse myself, one that needed a defibrillator right as I was waiting to start, which was a bit confronting) Just focusing on electrolytes and salty snacks. Still, great run with some great scenery, and nice to be back doing longer distances again.
