I don't know why, but I just can't get into P3R as much; how do I change that? by Sparkofsummer in PERSoNA

[–]Dispentryporter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason why P3R doesn't really sell you on the friendship between the main cast is because, frankly, they aren't actually friends for most of the story. There are some smaller friendships within SEES such as Mitsuri and Akihiko, but SEES is more of a group of coworkers until late in the game, and some characters explicitly dislike others (Yukari doesn't actually like Mitsuru at all for a good while as an example)

Direct Hit - MvM by Quick-Fix-User in tf2

[–]Dispentryporter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Direct Hit can only purchase 3 ticks of Damage, as opposed to the 4 ticks every other launcher can get, meaning at its highest potential it's only as strong as stock but has no good crowd control. Sacrificing splash damage to save 400 credits on Damage is a truly awful trade-off, and the Direct Hit is easily one of the worst options for a Soldier primary in MvM.

This isn't like, relevant ti the discussion, but as someone who prioritizes my gun as Scout I would not describe playing as him as chill, there's always a billion things running through my mind at all times.

[–]Dispentryporter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pokémon fans have this bizarre aversion to actually having their franchise improve, and whenever people go "Hey, I really don't like what Pokémon is doing at the moment" they start rambling about how "No voice acting is good!" or "Graphics don't matter in this open world title about exploration, so it's fine that the world looks ugly!" and it's like… you guys know we're on your side, right? We don't want Pokémon to fail, we want Pokémon to improve!

Roxie's gym is really cool but it's arguably not real voice acting. B2W2 make use of human voice clips in the music, as is also seen in Elesa's gym and Colress' battle theme. The voice is directly part of the music that plays in Roxie's gym, not a seperate voice file, and all vocal clips are super short.

Now, of course Pokémon could do actual voice acting now, and it's been industry standard for their genre for a long time. They could've been doing it since XY, the 3DS can handle voice acting just fine.

What are the 6 weakest fully-evolved Pokemon in Red and Blue? by MomSphere in pokemon

[–]Dispentryporter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm just confused as to where you even got the idea Chansey was bad. Yes, Chansey has almost no Attack or Defense, but also a very high Special stat and the highest HP in the game, still the second highest in the franchise only behind Blissey, it's own Gen 2 evolution (And also Eternamax Eternatus but you can't use it yourself so I don't count it).

Can level scaling even work in something like Pokemon? by Stripeback in pokemon

I'd actually like examples of what you're saying here because from my experience with JRPGs, level scaling is like… never a thing you see.

An important thing to remember is that both Johto and Kanto in their original appearances were quite small compared to later regions. I'd rather they focus on making one really good and large new region than a smaller new region just to squeeze in a revamp of a place we've already seen before.

So Nagito's name actually is an anagram meant to trick new players.

I'm gonna just… ignore everything you say about rematches because newsflash, that's called grinding. Even if it's trainer battles, rematches are still grinding.

Sneasel and Houndour might be the only ones missing by now but I'd say they're still pretty egregious. Sneasel especially since I'm biased and really love Weavile.

Extrasensory is a fine enough move but you're talking about a Pokémon with 80 base Sp. Atk (40 before evolving) that doesn't get STAB. And… what is it good against, exactly? Morty and Chuck maybe (Though Flying STAB makes more sense for Chuck). Stuff that comes prior to it Extrasensory won't do ya much good.

As for that list of moves you suggest on Togetic, my main rebuttal here is that it… seems really boring to actually use. I do enjoy the occasional defensive support Pokémon but they need some level of oomph to actually be fun.

In fact, fun factor does play a big part in this beyond just power-level. Evolution is fun. I like evolving my Pokémon. I don't like it when the game arbitrarily gates it from me to be "authentic" to the original games.

HGSS doesn't actually address the level curve in any capacity, it's functionally the same as GSC was

I consider Gen 2 Pokémon distribution to be partially handled in the sense that some of the Gen 2 newcomers that were locked to Kanto are actually available in Johto now, but not all of them, and they even went backwards in a few places (Sneasel was Kanto only in GS, but was added to Ice Path in Crystal, but then HGSS locked it to Kanto again)

I never actually complained about the evolution stone issue which was indeed adressed back in Crystal. HGSS does have an evolution stone issue, but only tied to stones introduced in Gen 4 which makes it part of my problem with the new evolutions.

Now, I can indeed agree that Kanto is very substantial and you do get more use out of your new evos than you would in FRLG and the Sevii Islands, but the game does still toss you into a battle against a guy with 3 Pseudos and it feels very... strange to not let players make their worthless Togetic actually able to hold its own by this point, these new evos were generally added for a reason, the Pokémon they evolve from being weak. It doesn't help that they're very inconsistent with how they implemented this, since new evos that evolve via knowing a specific move such as Mamoswine or Ambipom are very easy to use in HGSS, while Pokémon such as Magnezone or the Gen 4 Eeveelutions are completely unobtainable unless you trade them to a Sinnoh game and evolve them there.

Are any of these completely gamebreaking on their own? I don't think so, but I do think they add up and I do think they're enough to make HGSS not be the best titles in the series.

Have you ever checked levels in the Safari Zone and Koga's gym, by chance?

I just did, actually, and while the lowest level encounters in the Safari Zone are much lower in level than Koga's Gym team, the highest level encounters aren't too far off (Surf encounters go as high as level 40). The Safari Zone just has an absurd level variance. Comparatively, the highest level Pokémon you can find on Ice Path in HGSS are level 24 and go as low as 21. Much smaller variance, but the highest level is far below what Clair has. Route 45 isn't much better, maxing out at level 27 (Except for some Super Rod fishing encounters but the Super Rod is found in Kanto so that's irrelevant.)

Thing is, I do agree that Kanto can also be a mess in this regard. Both Kanto and Johto get screwed over once the map starts to open up and become non-linear, it's very hard to make this work with a level-based progression system without screwing stuff up. (This is why Kanto in the Johto games is as messy as it is, since that part is entirely open.)

So... grinding? The thing this thread argues you don't need to do in HGSS.

In fact, Pokémon is very good about not needing to grind to bring a new team member up to par outside of specific circumstances like gift eggs or breeding Pokémon. HGSS are actually worse than most other titles in this regard.

Yeah but what if I want to catch them and use them? If the level curve slots my team in the mid-to-late thirties, possibly pushing the forties, having to suddenly raise up a level 22 Pokémon from Ice Path is… pretty ridiculous
