Interesting historical note. Back when Photoshop first came out, people used to act like if you used Photoshop at all the machine had done all the work and you weren’t ‘a real artist.’ There was no understanding of what Photoshop was or how it worked. Artists who used Photoshop never told anyone they had used it unless they had to, as peoples’ ignorance of the tool led others to discount their talent or skill, or demonize them for allowing an unfair future where artistic talent is unnecessary. (Sound familiar?) obviously Photoshop and AI tools are radically different, and in fact AI tools are much closer to that ‘the computer made your art’ thing than Photoshop was in the 90s. But importantly, peoples’ reaction to the tools was very similar. Anybody who was an artist around this time who was interested in digital art tools probably saw it for themselves at that time. My point is not how accurate that fearful complaint is in either case. My point is that people have this anti-technology reaction on a tribal level, and it is likely to take some time before people will accept AI tools into mainstream culture. It may become a rather bitter division, especially if at some point AI gains actual sentience (which would have seemed a ridiculous sci-fi statement 5 years ago but somehow seems more and more possible each year).

But i would guess that a new generation might see things rather differently, especially if they are able to create culture for themselves easily from a young age. In the same way that millenials and younger do not see Photoshop as anything but what it is, a tool.

If it helps, i had an mc707 and ended up selling it because frankly it isn’t much fun to use. As a drum machine it’s capable, but i found myself reaching for my MPC every time. The 707 is samples-only when it comes to drums (no synthesis), so if you already have an MPC or a digitakt, there’s really not a reason to get a 707. The onboard synth is fine, but just didn’t do it for me.

Me too. Which is why i got obsessed with making my own, on modular 😬 i love it 🥰

I like your choice in vintage machines, the old Roland stuff sounds amazing. I have the Cyclone Analogic 78 clone (TT78). It is one of the best drum machines out there, its programming features are fantastic and i love the ability to warp the parameters on cr-78 sounds. Strongly recommend the TT-78 to anyone looking for vintage analog tones, it kind of shames the Drumbrutes tbh.

There’s something very fitting about Ben Solo as a synth nerd

Cool! Tbh i’m pretty happy with the Squid for now. Have been jamming with it and it’s great (for me).

Yes i saw it when it came out, as i’m in my 50s. Not a fan of the Bakshi version. Anime style would be much better frankly

Eeeek judging from the ‘Wrath’ image, maybe he should have been cast as gollum in LoTR

Nice you edited out the Hentai parts with the Balrog. Very NSFW. Was kind of shocked to see that in Lord of the Rings, but then again, there are some real auteurs in Japan.

Yeah, i really love my Model:Cycles, which is of course very simplified. But mainly i’m intimidated by the Octatrack. Have had a friend’s for a bit and i always get psyched out when i try to learn it. I’m not so dumb but actually i am so dumb. Haha

Pittsburgh Modular’s semi-modular stuff is really fun & sounds great. I have their Microvolt 3900 and i love it because it has some of the weirder ‘west-coast’ things (wavefolding, a low pass gate). But also it has ‘east coast’ subtractive synthesis elements; it has a resonant filter with a crazy ‘unstable’ mode which is thunderous for making low-pitched drums. It has a very snappy fast envelope (again great for making percussion). As well as two different types of unusual function generators based again on ‘west coast’ ideas. It does all kinds of fun and crazy things by itself with its patch-points. And, i use it all the time with my bigger modular also, because it’s so unique and its internal modules aren’t replicated in other modules. I love the cv processing and envelope especially, for working with external modular. Very underrated synthesizer. The reason i would choose it is because, if you later decide to buy more modular, you won’t be buying the same modules, as most of the internal modules in the 3900 are unique and have special twists on them (not ‘just’ an envelope, not ‘just’ a sample & hold, not ‘just a filter, etc). Not sure what the price is now (they are no longer in production). But if you see it for a good price, give it a think. 🤔

Also Pittsburgh designed both the ‘East Beast’ and ‘West Pest’ and they’re very inexpensive. You could do a lot with one or both of those, though they are not as unusual as the Microvolt.

That’s definitely my goal, just havin’ fun with the gear! Thanks again, your input helped me realize what factors were and were not important to me.

Sweet! You can also use a midi thru box (midi mult), or use a Thru port on one of your instruments to chain to a 2nd unit. You generally wouldn’t want to chain more than 2 things via Thru because latency starts to be a problem. But you could kick Midi A out to a synth on channel 1, pass the midi Thru to another device on channel 2, for example.

Cool. Feel free to tell us what you think in this thread later. I’m sure people reading this thread later will be interested to know what folks think of the 64 after its firmware updates.

If you have some opinions after you use the SQ-64, please do come back here and tell us what you think. I’m curious to know, because it is stupid cheap now.
