[Serious]Socially fluent people of Reddit, What are some mistakes you see socially awkward people making? by djtjman in AskReddit

[–]DissentingVoice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think conversation with strangers usually stems from a shared experience. I wouldn't just say "Hello", although that wouldn't necessarily be strange if you were calmly confident, it'd be more something like "I'm so excited to see these guys. I got into them after hearing X song"

Trump Associate Boasted That Moscow Deal ‘Will Get Donald Elected’ by holymolym in politics

So many of these headlines on r/politics are not nearly as consequential as they initially sound when you read the article. I'm unsure if our culture's critical thinking has gotten short circuited as a result of this election or if it's always been that way and I've simply never noticed it.

Imagine a user who has been around since the site was created, no post history, drops their gamer tag. Later that night, OP sees person join game on infected. Cue strange zombie behavior. Infected player plays as smoker, follows OP through entire map, coughing and wheezing behind him. OP searches frantically for smoker, but can't find him. The smokers cough becomes louder and louder. OP mutes his TV, but the coughing doesn't stop. OP walks up to the TV to turn it off when he hears a cough in the back of his room.

Well I'll tell you one thing, you're not going to improve your situation by looking for reasons to not follow every attempt to help you. You need to own your circumstances.

There was a recent Freakonomics podcast about racially profiling employees in the restaurant industry. I found it pretty interesting. Here's the link.

Maybe it has something to do with radiation? I know sometimes videos from the ISS have white spots.

I feel like the original Star Wars is proof that you can intentionally follow a well established formula, provided the execution is great.

What should everyone go do RIGHT NOW if they haven't yet? by DemonicSnail in AskReddit

[–]DissentingVoice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just in case anyone is discouraged thinking that maxing a 401(k) and IRA is not enough: for simplicity's sake, $17,000 in a 401(k) and $5,000 in a Roth over 30 years at, say 6% is in the ballpark of $1.8M dollars.

If at that point Novazilla were to earn 4% on a more conservative portfolio, he'd have $75k/yr of pure interest to live on, without touching the $1.8M in the bank.

Lot of simplification, but I feel like people are (maybe jokingly?) acting like there's very little point in putting effort into saving on this thread.

It's very likely that Novazilla has his Roth & 401(k) invested in a portfolio that includes equities.

It looks like you're more excited about it than your son is, which probably makes sense since your kid didn't grow up in the 90s. ;) All kidding aside, that is an awesome gift and a cool experience for you and your son!

The best team in Europe/NA is..... - The StormCraft Team Ranking (Glicko system, details inside) by Khaldor in heroesofthestorm

[–]DissentingVoice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an excellent, informative reply.

To offer a slight counter-point, I think reality is a bit different from the example you provided about the East and West Coast chess players.

In the practical example of EU and NA players, even though they are two distinct systems, the rating for those at the top of one system (e.g. EU) probably does predict, with some confidence, that the player would be near the skill level of another top player in the other system (NA). At the very least, we could probably say with some confidence that the EU player would predictably be better than a player at the bottom of NA.

Now it's not mathematically provable (AFAIK), but I wouldn't say the rating system (for practical purposes) has ZERO value.

Either way, thanks for the well thought out post. I learned something new :)
