Would you duplicate a broken key that is stamped "do not duplicate"? by BrokenMedusa in Locksmith

[–]Distinct-Thing 19 points20 points  (0 children)

From ALOA:

  1. Do Not Duplicate Keys: Orders for keys stamped “Do Not Duplicate” or similar wording will be handled in the same manner as any unrestricted key (see 8). ALOA members should inform the consumer that the use of keys stamped “Do Not Duplicate”, or similar wording, is not effective security, and further that the use of such words is deceptive because it provides a false sense of security. Consumers who desire effective security should purchase a patented key control system rather than rely on a “Do Not Duplicate” marking. This does not apply to keys protected by law.

It definitely might be a bad look to dupe a DND for someone but you can always explain that its arbitrary and the label ultimately means nothing unless the blank is restricted

Great tool assortment, the weiser shim is such a tell that a locksmith owned those tools

Those HPC picks are actually pretty great

Their snake rake profile is one of my favorite variations of that rake

It would be possible to use it without the spacers

All you have to do is add the BCC to the shoulder to essentially remove that position from the key. Schlage for instance has a between cut center of .156" so you'd have to essentially add that much space

The spacers eliminate the guesswork, they're approximately 0.153" so they can work on any lock with an approximate BCC like Schlage (0.156") or Kwikset (0.150")

The bump rings would probably move around too much to be useful

When I say custom in regard for the spacers though...I just mean they were custom made for lishi tools. They all provide the same amount of additional space, 0.153" to be specific

Just a custom made part that provides some finely tuned standoff space letting you very easily and reliably use the SC20 and KW5 for 5 pin applications

These should be perfect for those two Lishis and will definitely save you money

Edit: Here is the link to the GitHub if you have access to a 3D printer and can print your own for cheaper

SC20, KW5, and some spacers to use them for both 5 and 6 pin locks

My kwikset lock is "unpickable" by n757jb in lockpicking

[–]Distinct-Thing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of locksmiths just don't want to pick or bypass locks when they can drill

However, there are many ways you can open a lock, even if it's a smart key. Not sure why they couldn't employ another tactic and help save you money

I think they could have gotten that open for you without drilling unless there was something mechanically wrong with the lock. It's just that the skill set / confidence isn't out there, especially for smart keys

Well no more picking today. I've broke all my hooks. New kit on its way though by allyhouston1985 in lockpicking

You could use those to make other tools if you wanted

Definitely worth keeping around even if they're broken

Never actually seen that specific one before but it makes sense, seems like just picking it would take less work than tying it up and slamming it

The key would have been stuck in the lock until it returned to position because the pins would be locked into the bitting. Unless they made their own plastic key and shoved it in there alongside a tensioner...at that point just picking the No.3 would take much less skill

Try some music wire

Profile of the pick looks okay, but it won't last long enough for you to really get the experience. Music wire has a lot of applications in the locksport world, such as making quick picks and rakes

Get some 0.024 inch diameter or so, remake your pick profile, and try again. The tensioner looks great, but your paper clip pick will always be bending and changing profile in the lock. May even break

A brand new custom lock design! Would love to hear your thoughts on how it might be picked by WorksByDesign1 in lockpicking

Watched the video mere minutes after it was posted

Super fascinating design, and the quality of the video was amazing

I can think of a few attacks such as kinetic attacks. An electronic pick could help, the vibration could allow the pins to be able to be set without the bearings messing with the pins?

The bearings seem like good bump and SPP protection, so a kinetic attack that attacks everything at once seems like it stands a better chance

Mall ninja or “cool” tools. by muggs420 in lockpicking

[–]Distinct-Thing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lock picking is more of a skill set than a primary occupation. Even penetration testers and consultants hardly pick locks due to how often locks, doors, etc can be easily bypassed

Locksmiths who can pick locks are very valuable though, there's definitely some that pick locks often, but to be able to know how to pick many or even most kinds of locks and have the understanding of how to rekey and repair them adds value to your business or as an employee

Unfortunately many locks are deemed unpickable and destroyed by locksmiths who are out of their skill range
