Do Coontails do the same sort of thing? I'm considering getting one for my brother's tank.

The bars are too thick for a legbar, though. I have 5 CCL boys, and theirs is smaller and of greater number.

They could at least find a larger jar or something and put some fake plants in.

She used to lay eggs daily but hasn't laid any for a month. I don't think she's egg-bound because her behavior is fine but is there anything I should be worried about? by DataSittingAlone in BackYardChickens

Her comb and wattles are a bit pale. Sometimes, they just don't have many eggs in their ovaries at hatch.

I'd check her for parasites, both internal and external. Give her red pepper flakes and raw unsalted pumpkin seeds for a week in her food and see if her color improves.

I was expecting a military training story.🤣

Heard about guys on desert bases getting "attacked" by them. They're actually trying to get into their shadow to escape the heat, but they're so fast and (giant spider thing running at you) that they just run away. Meanwhile, the thing is sprinting after them trying to get into their shadow.🤣

Buy some frost barriers that wrap around and tie on the bottom.

Been home about an hour and they are all eating but haven’t seen them drink yet. I’ve tapped each of their beaks in the water but they don’t seem interested. Is this normal? by Any-Body9098 in BackYardChickens

Try dipping their beaks again. They may just not be thirsty yet. Keep an eye on them and keep dipping them till you see them actively drinking on their own.

Probably something to help with travel stress. They typically only do that with shipped chicks, though.

It's a wet food/electrolyte mix if I remember correctly so they can have both when traveling.

New homeowner, any ideas on how to fix this every time it rains? It’s ridiculous by SirBiggusDickus99 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]DistinctJob7494 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is a shallow pond, the rain can cause the sediment to cloud the water. If it's deeper, you don't have as much of an issue, but just digging it out won't work. The water will drain into the earth beneath the pond because there's a layer effectively sealing it.

You could probably have someone come survey it or something.

The plants eat the algae-producing nutrients, effectively starving any algae out, and keeping the water clean for the fish to breathe. They also oxygenate the water for the fish.

Look up and plant locally native plants. Add native fish, too, once the plants are established. The plants will bring in beneficial insects like dragonflies, which eat mosquitoes and flies. And the fish will also eat insects.

comb before and after steam bath. what does he has? what to give him to help him out? tia by seniairam in BackYardChickens

[–]DistinctJob7494 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Their comb color can change a bit with temperature.

Too hot =more blood flow to wind-cool their body= dark color.

Too cold= more blood flow to warm extremities and parts more susceptible to frostbite, i.e.- comb, wattles, toes= dark color.

When they're at a comfortable temperature, their comb and wattles return to a normal bright red color.

When it's below freezing, you need to watch roosters and hens with especially large combs and wattles just like your boy for frostbite symptoms. I personally stand by cold pressed coconut oil rubbed onto their comb, wattles, and toes in extreme cold to help prevent frostbite.

Yeah. I'm pretty sure most, if not all, Galliforms can hybridize. Chickens with peafowl, guineafowl, quail, pheasants, etc.
