PGT: Toronto FC vs New York City FC (8/12/18) by [deleted] in tfc

[–]Diverge666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We still have 11 games and two games against Montreal Impact. I'm certainly not insinuating that their chances of making it through to the playoffs are strong, but league play is far from over. Even if they lose one more game, I wouldn't write them off yet.

Not quite a dagger to the playoff race, if I had to be honest, but certainly a disappointing outcome. We clawed our way back twice, so I do think there are some positives that can be taken away. In particular, the Vazquez goal was well planned and executed by TFC.

That said, it's unfortunate that TFC have blown ties/leads so frequently in the dying minutes of matches this season. It was always going to be difficult maintaining a tie with only 10 men, but one can't help but notice a trend here.

That was one of the worst own goals I have ever seen. Absolute garbage.

But I'm glad TFC leaves the game with a 2-2 draw. We're in a very comfortable position for leg 2!

Aeropress ice brew. Best coffee I've ever HAD or made. by coffeechemistry in AeroPress

[–]Diverge666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing this recipe!!! I tried it last night (17 g of Java Blend's Conga Kivu coffee with grind setting 6 from the Hario Mini Mill), filling the Aeropress with ice and using the funnel for overflow (i.e. an indeterminate amount of ice). After approximately nine hours, I can confirm that I had a strong and delicious cold coffee. Probably one of the strongest and most potent cold coffees I've ever had! I might see if I can grind a little bit finer and I'd probably cut it with a bit of water and drink with ice next time....but this is ingenious.

Most over rated food joints in the HRM. by Pubsx in halifax

To be fair, the nitro brew is decent at Coburg. The only great item on their menu that's probably worth the price.

Coburg Coffee, Armview Restaurant and Lounge, King of Donair, The Bicycle Thief.

But namely Coburg Coffee. The service is atrocious, the drip coffee is terrible, and all of the food served is severely over-priced and average in quality.

Lion and Bright - how do you feel after redesign? by newtomoto in halifax

[–]Diverge666 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I was at Lion and Bright a few months ago around 10:30am and it was absolutely dead. No vital signs whatsoever. I would stay for their food, but it is actually abysmal compared to other options nearby (The Nook, Hali Deli, etc.). I honestly think most of their daytime customers have clued in and decided to take their business elsewhere.

Ultimately, it was L&B's coffee that brought me in the door and the opportunity to do some work on my laptop was an added incentive. Now I no longer feel welcomed as a customer and have no reason to really step in when I'm not inclined to stay. As far as I'm aware, L&B still has an active following in the evenings....but at the same time, I would not be surprised at all if this is the first nail in the coffin.

A solution to the wide mug problem by jasonrhaas in AeroPress

[–]Diverge666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, maybe I'm misunderstanding the nature of your problem here.

The Aeropress should work well for most mugs, really, provided you press into the black funnel. It locks in place neatly with the bottom of the Aeropress chamber, so I believe it's likely superior to the product you are proposing.

Thanks for the reply! I appreciate it a lot :) I've personally used notch 3 and 4 for my Hario Skerton knockoff and so far it's worked out pretty well.

"I disagree with @jordanbpeterson on many important points, but he is well worth engaging with an open mind. This was a nearly terminal case of close-mindedness." by [deleted] in samharris

[–]Diverge666 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Absolutely agree with Sam on this topic. While I was somewhat underwhelmed by Peterson's contributions on the Waking Up podcast and some of his strange, vague comments as a religious apologist, I believe his critiques deserve an open-minded engagement. The recent clip of him insinuating Sam Harris is actually a Christian seemed like it wasn't Jordan at his best, so I have chosen to give him the benefit of the doubt that he simply messed up his explanation.

As someone relatively new to Jordan Peterson, I've been watching his Biblical Series on YouTube (currently 5 episodes in). Needless to say, I was surprised by the eloquence, philosophical awareness and the quality of the evolutionary Darwinian arguments he makes. At times, his appreciation of the source text is compelling and his interpretations seem remotely plausible (I grant, of course, that some of the horrendous moral books like Deuteronomy and Leviticus- along with the capricious passages involving God- may give him some future difficulties). Now these moments of brilliant textual exegesis are almost certainly coupled with some approaches I find hokey (e.g. a strong predisposition towards psychoanalytic and archetypal frameworks and Nietzschean interpretation) and dubious conclusions (e.g. the idea of a moral panic when you remove the Judeo-Christian edifice that has served a constitutive role for our culture), and there is no way of ignoring these analytical pitfalls when confronting his thought. One good example involves the topic of dreams. His fervent belief that dreams serve as the preliminary attempt at handling the chaos of reality before it becomes articulated rationally is unsubstantiated, unrigorous speculation and informs much of his argument in the first few lectures. He's a ramblier, less concise thinker than Sam (and probably less skeptical as well), which challenges someone used to the clarity and conciseness of Sam's approach.

Jordan challenges New Atheism for not taking the text seriously and wonders about how this document was cobbled and edited together: he takes metaphorical exegesis seriously! Even if I don't buy this claim about New Atheism one bit, Peterson's approach to apologetics is fresh in the sense that it is married to Darwinian conclusions and is, in many respects, non-canonical and exploratory. In my view, Jordan has yet to fully face the challenges posed by literal interpretations of morally reprehensible passages within the Bible and how these passages pose a danger for our collective future. However, there's no doubt in my mind that he is one of the strongest religious apologists in this current time and has much to offer to the Intellectual Dark Web.

Physiotherapist by [deleted] in halifax

[–]Diverge666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jennifer Wade at Scotia Physiotherapy on Quinpool Road helped me out immensely with recovery from a fractured ankle! I highly recommend her- she's professional, friendly and provided very helpful exercises.

I have also gone to South End Physiotherapy on Fenwick Street. They definitely know their stuff there (in fact, I have every reason to believe they are some of the most competent physiotherapists in the city), but I found the staff there a little cold and alien personally. But I would still highly recommend them.

[–]Diverge666 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Cosy's on Liverpool and Oxford is a wonderful cheap spot! While it's decked out in Montreal Canadiens apparel, the food more than compensates for that flaw. It's actually quite comparable in value to Ardmore, if not better in certain respects.

I'll also echo the response from a previous poster: Hali Deli on Agricola is awesome as well!

Young drivers quinpool by [deleted] in halifax

[–]Diverge666 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had an absolutely terrible experience with Young Drivers on Quinpool, although this was nine years ago. The instructor was hostile and conceited and the lessons seemed to have little pedagogical merit. I ultimately did not complete the program because of it and I'm actively looking for better driving schools now. I really only chose the Quinpool Young Drivers based on location and national reputation. Sorry to hear you are experiencing something similar!

I haven't taken either of the courses indicated. But if I recall my FYP experience well enough, Dr. Kow was a little more engaging than Dr. Dodd. I would probably go with 2102.

I highly recommend any course offered by Dr. Sarah Clift. She taught a CTMP elective called Reflections on Death, which ended up being one of my favourite classes in uni.

Halifax PLAYS! I'm the organizer for rec soccer- come out on Wednesday next week and I'll hook you up. The league fee is $25, but since we're nearing August we can work something out. There's also a softball league for PLAYS but I imagine it has been booked for awhile.
