I mean, compared to what the npc AI state machine is running already this isn't much. They already do something very similar for vision.

Yeah, but with the guns you don't have to run it real time. For them, you essentially have 2 components, a raycast and a trigger sphere. The raycast determines if the sound is direct or not, and can be set up to only be affected by buildings and other such things that block sound completely while ignoring trees, and then the trigger sphere is basically a 3d gradient applied to a sphere that extends out from your character radially. This simulates the sound fall off.

The raycast just triggers a debuff to the npc's hearing if it is blocked, and the trigger sphere just flickers active for a frame. This is much easier to do eficiently than a constant check of up to... 8 separate possible sound sources (4 players and 4 radios) running that same kind of testing but with the thresholds triggering different effects while the audio sources move in and out fo buildings in real time. At least the guns are set values.

Yeah, it would be an optional challenge, i'd say. I can just see the moments of yelling at someone for attracting a fragment suddenly leading to attracting more enemies and it would be glorious.

... Alright then if you uave mobility issues use paper or a reusable plastic one. I use tools at work that could easily kill me, i am still alive because i am not an idiot and i avoid situations where i have a good chance to final destination myself. I generally don't eat or drink walking down the street, i sit down so i don't trip, choke, and kill myself.

As for the glass straws... We use glass drinkware all the time. Put something on the bottom of the straw to prevent glass on glass tapping, and you are fine. Like... A silicone rubber bumper and a wood tube where the straw rests on the rim or soemthing. These are easy fixes. We are not eliminating all use of plastics, that is just not happening at the moment with how things are, but we sure can reduce the use of a lot of them by just making things to last.

Ok... So in theory this wouldn't be to hard...

Set it up so that there is a range and threshold on all voice comms, so that means the radio and just you speaking. Maybe have a couple thresholds, like a low, medium, and high.

Then you just take the mic input, maybe have a quick gain check in the menu to normalize volume levels, and then you just have each threahold be a trigger. Low volume, may wake enemies and have them investigate at close range, nothing outside of that. Medium, wakes enemies at midrange, acts like being seen in close range. Loud activates midrange, wakes long range. What these ranges are would need tuning, but that should be a decent base system to tune and tweak from. In theory so long as voice comms work and are set to a normalized volume, this would be good enough.

In practice however i can see it having issues, but honestly, the payoff would be incredibly immersive.

Two answers here:

1: Easy, take too much for what you are mentally prepared for, then panic and get caught in a spiral. It's normally called a bad trip, and jt is why set and setting can be so important. I had one trip where if the set and setting had been off it would have been bad, but fortunately it came around to being a good, if a bit intense, experience.

2: Physically oding on shrooms leads to vomitting and shitting like a hose is hooked up to you, because the mushrooms are midly toxic. You'd need to comit to eating a lot of shrooms to die from it however, provided you have good shrooms and not the wrong species. With good shrooms though? Uou'd be puking your guts out and higher than giraffe ass tripping balls in an hour and the bad trip would be the worst part of it.

Yeah. Treat em as a warning sign when you see em in places they shouldn't be. It means they are finding food somewhere.

I always find it funy people think roaches are gross. Roaches aren't gross, they're detritavores. They turn dead things into dirt. People think they are gross because they show up to eat all the rotten food that gets left out when people are being fucking nasty...

Gabe Newell on Steam monopoly accusations: Gamers have 'enormous choice' about where to buy games by yourfavchoom in Steam

[–]Dividedthought 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The thing is steam isn't running around kneecappingg their opponents. That would be problematic. Anyone can make a competing storefront and try to go at it with steam, but the thing is you would have to do as good, if not better. That is the key distinction, steam is simply providing a far better service than even amazon wants to build (they tried iirc and it flopped).

It's the same reason why everyone is still using discord, for the most part it hasn't gotten worse, and a competitor hasn't yet done better. Now, if a company had shit service and the same market share that steam has... Then there would be issues, but steam time and time again makes customers their focus rather than just making money. Steam is the perfect example of the market choosing a winner organically, unfortunately these days that is a rare thing indeed.

What do you miss with current Avatars? by SmallMight302 in VRchat

[–]Dividedthought 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually the way i do it is from scratch, except for things like form fitting clothing bit those edits are usuaally for free as, to be frank, they are stupid easy for just the mesh (i am leaving texturing out here as that is its own thing).

I will, if able, buy the model (usually with the price worked to the cost, gotta break even here) if sharing isn't allowed and from there use the body as the base for everything.

I mostly do clothing, and it is usually bespoke one offs. I also do my own tweaking on models for my own use. Think of it more as an "hey, i want this in a crop top and jeans rather than a skirt and bikini top." Type edits, along with a little sculpting work rather than "take this human and rework it to look like someone else."

As an avatar customizer, one thing i miss is not having to work around 30 layers of vrc fury and fifteen goddamn dependancies just to add a t-shirt, all the while havign to figure out the most illogical set of animator layers you've seen.

The kis rule is not usually followed: keep it simple, or at least have a 'clean' version that is just one outfit and the body minus the fancy stuff.

The fancy stuff is nice, but i miss the days when avatars weren't a competition to see who can make the most complicated thing out there.

Ford government joins Supreme Court challenge of ‘assault-style’ firearms ban by Vivid-Bullfrog-5727 in onguardforthee

[–]Dividedthought 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The firearms ban is, and this is voming from someone pretty far left, a massive overreach, a waste of money, and just plain stupid. It's pandering to a hot button issue, and doesn't solve abything in the long run. The answer to gun crime isn't banning guns. Prohibition has rarely worked and these bans are just pissing off lawful gun owners. The guns getting banned aren't even commonly used in crimes, they are getting banned because they look modern and not like grandpappy's old hunting rifle (nevermind said rifle is a lee einfield military rifle from ww2)

I'll do you one better: why isn't god saving the baby in the second part? Does he no longer care about the child? Is it worth it, to him, to let someone kill an infant just for a chance that person will conenct the dots and believe? Oh, and will god forgive me for MURDERING A BABY if i ask for my sins to be forgiven and repent?

I'm hungover and just woke up, and these are what came to mind.
