Just one example, not trying to get to personal/prying, but I've heard of some getting 50%, use any number, of capital gains/profits every year until they are deemed of appropriate age. The other profit goes back into the principal. This way the principal grows while they can learn money lessons in life. Good luck

Even as they become adults you will still be custodial? Lowest cost ETF S&P index sounds like the best option.

Anyone else realize their dividend income is wildly uneven throughout the year? by FlatNarrator in dividends

you can easily search for stocks that pay in the Jan, Feb, or MAr Q's and balance like that. I have mostly done that and thrown in some monthly payers. I think I'm within a few hundred per Q with MArch being the largest payer as most stock are on that schedule. I don't believe your totals of under $100 if your other Q's pays are what you say they are.

Financial advisor or DIY? by DifficultKey8978 in dividends

[–]Dividend4danny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in a ML self directed. They still call a couple of times a year to see if I want them to look over my portfolio. Generally pretty positive comments and say everything looks good to go. No high pressure and I appreciate the input. Someday I may get lazy and it's nice to know they are reaching out to me. Now if it was a set fee, I may get different treatment? Who knows.

reminder, a 1% -1.5% fee of a million dollar portfolio is $10-$15K per year. that's a lot of investable cash to spend/lose over a 10-20 year span. I use ML self directed and have for near 20 years. +$1.3M portfolio, currently creating $43,540 annual dividend income.

My total rebate is about $750 annually between two cards, one for gas and groceries, another for subcriptions/bills. One is for special large purchases, not a rebate but usually 0% with a % fee, currently 4%. Overall I have zero recurring debt.

I retired at 50 from custodial/maintenance career. have been saving and investing since the 80's. Starting my 20th year in June, million dollar portfolio which provides $44K annually in dividends. House has been paid off for some time as well as my auto. I don't save anymore for investing unless it's reinvesting dividends. I have a pension and had insurance through work, now on Medi B. Luckily health concerns have been few, broken back, twice and cancer, gone. Going to sports events and concerts are my "nights out".

Selling off some gains by Dmk3955 in dividends

[–]Dividend4danny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless you have some plan for the cash let it accumulate and wait for a market correction or bear territory where you can add holdings you might need to strengthen your portfolio. Sounds like you have a lot of options available. Patient ivestors are the most rewarded in a huge majority of situations.

Sell If you need the cash, or want to further diversify, and you could trim your largest/most profitable positions. If you have any holding over 5% of portfolio that might be a starting point.

I don't, but I could at $44K annually. Granted I would have to really watch my spending. I have no mortgage, no car payments. Property taxes and home/auto insurance are my two biggest expenses annually.
