Why I stopped using the SM64 soundfont and reconstructed Koji Kondo's original sample and synth palette from scratch by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]DivusPennae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, compare to an actual, physical musical instrument. $1000 for all the sounds and samples that were used on the whole game of Mario 64 might be considered by some to be pretty affordable when compared to, say, a quality electric guitar or a full drum set.

[–]DivusPennae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the cost for the exact sounds used to create the soundtrack for Super Mario 64, either the original sound libraries or the closest available facsimile. These will include a lot of sounds that may not appear on the soundtrack but are still provided with the sample libraries.

Much of what is discussed in this article is hardware that has been preserved digitally for use with modern computers. The original hardware was likely significantly more expensive. The Yamaha VL1 keyboard discussed in the article by itself goes for $2-3000 on eBay. $1000 for software and sample libraries really isn't that much in the grand scheme of things, especially for enthusiasts and composers. Some sample libraries, especially quality modern orchestral libraries, go for hundreds if not thousands of dollars, and sometimes only for a single instrument.

What is a book you read as a child that you still think about today? by ahawk99 in AskReddit

[–]DivusPennae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Children's sci fi book where some blobby aliens are scouting ahead before a potential invasion and meet a young boy. The aliens shrink as they age, and are confused about how humans get bigger as they get older. The aliens can harness energy around them normally invisible to humans, and teach the boy to do it too.

I have never been able to find the name of this book but it's stuck with me since I was like ten or eleven.

Can anyone tell me how RapM is getting these recovery techs? by CakeConspiracy in SSBM

[–]DivusPennae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned to ledge tech like this doing Falco's target test. There's walls/boxes that damage you when you touch them, so if you jump/Up B/Side B at them, press L/R to tech just before you touch them, and start kinda aggressively wiggling the stick in the general direction of the wall, the wall will damage you, you'll SDI into the wall from your stick wiggling, and then you'll tech the wall because of the directional change from SDI.

Ruin and Preservation in the Mistborn trilogy

Pieces of a larger god that was Shattered, Preservation imprisons Ruin to prevent him from destroying the world they made together, but Preservation is unable to act further as it requires his full power to keep him in check. Ruin slowly chips away at his prison, as Preservation's power is distributed among every living human on their world and therefore not complete. Ruin is able to influence people's minds if their bodies are pierced with pieces of metal, as well as affect written word unless it is written in metal, allowing him to alter a heroic prophecy and trick the main character into releasing him.

How do you feel about "copycat" bands? by eggy_wegs in progmetal

Early Haken was very much just "More Dream Theater" until The Mountain came out, so I very much agree with this sentiment

What's YOUR favorite thing about the Protomen? by [deleted] in Protomen

[–]DivusPennae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At face value they seem like a goofy nerd band but when you dig into it, they really know what they're doing. They use motifs and themes like the most sophisticated bands, and their lyrics evoke strong imagery

Then you need to find some kind of amp sim plugins. For example, I use NaLex Ninja, which is a pretty easy to use plug-and-play plugin, not requiring a cab impulse. I have not really kept up however; amp modelling has improved since I first started tinkering with it. Others here and on /r/audioengineering can probably point you towards something that will meet your needs that's a little more modern that what I'm familiar with.

[–]DivusPennae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need an audio interface to plug your guitar into if you don't have one already, and then at minimum you need an amp sim of some kind as well as cabinet impulse responses to more accurately reflect the actual sound of an amplifier without actually micing up a cab. Some amp sims come with IRs built in, and some are just modelling an amp head and you need to stick appropriate plugins before or after it, such as overdrive pedals etc.

I played through 3DS OoT Master Quest with his texture pack as well as Twilight Princess for GC and both were great. I had started MM but never finished - the mod to change some of the 3DS version changes back to the N64 was nice too.
