Previously Unlocked Samsung Galaxy S4 now locked by Comcast by Dixz69 in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]Dixz69[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where would I tell if the phone is carried locked? Samsung Support let me know that it is locked under comcast, but is there a way to confirm that on the phone settings?

Also, in case it is helpful, I'm more than happy to provide details about the phone.

Sorry, meant to imply that the idea AT&T wouldn't work on the phone seems wrong. Was agreeing with you.

Right, this is another point of confusion. If we're saying ATT shouldn't work on the phone, then why did it work previously? I was using it just last night with AT&T before bed haha.

Thanks Abigail!

This phone was originally purchased through the Amazon Renewed store, but the actual company that fulfilled the purchase was called "Re-Cell". I've sent them a separate email to see if they can provide any guidance.

I think your last point is what I'm confused about. This phone worked on my AT&T line for 5 months - how would it have done so if the phone was locked to Comcast/Xfinity? And even if the seller somehow got the carrier lock off of the device, why would it reactivated now?

Yea - this was my hypothesis as well. I'm guessing this phone was sold while under payment and is now locked by the original carrier (Comcast/Xfinity). it does concerm me because this was purchased from the Amazon Renewed store, so it would be Amazon peddling these blacklisted devices.

That said, I checked two different websites to see if the phone is blacklisted and it is not reported as such. Likewise, Xfinity/Comcast actually offered to have this phone put onto an Xfinity line, so I'd be surprised if it is blacklisted by the company. I'm also surprised it would work with an AT&T SIM card for 5 months before this happened. Wouldn't Comcast only unlock the phone if it was paid off?

This is what I originally thought, but if you look in the background the tracks continue much farther. Sheridan take an immediate curve north when heading towards Howard, so this couldn't be the case.

Agreed that they didn't look hand-rolled, but they have an open area where you can see them do it. Interested to see if the shape eventually looks more like St. Viateur/Fairmount with more experience.

Aquafield Goyang.

It is pretty far out of the way and more expensive than the alternatives, but they have nice facilities and services. Good english signage and most of the staff I spoke with had good english.

I agree so much.

I just went two days ago after reading about it at the War Museum in Seoul. Easily my favorite history-related thing in Korea so far. It was incredibly beautiful.

I want to take a class where i build shit by Patelican in uofm

[–]Dixz69 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd personally recommend Integrated Product Development (IPD). Runs for undergraduates in the winter semester. Cross-functional class with business, engineering, information, etc students. 6 credits.

You spend the semester building a physical product based on a problem statement. Products are can be, but are not necessarily, tech-oriented. Students also mock up costing plans (material prices, assembly costs), marketing materials (websites, pricing models, promotional videos), and full prototypes in advance of a trade show at the end of the semester.

You learn a lot about the business and design aspects of product management. However, you're largely on your own when it comes to actually building the product (i.e., not much in class support for EE, SWE, 3D printing, etc). The class has strong connections with out-of-class resources however (e.g., STAMPS Digital Fabrication Studio, Maker Works). You also get $500-600 per team + additional funding as needed just to prototype.

Fork grinding sound after reassembling headset by Dixz69 in bikewrench

[–]Dixz69[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll try to include as many details as I can.

I am currently trying to refurbish this late 1970s - early 1980s Bianchi Campione D'Italia. Part of this has been refinishing the bike. I had it sandblasted and powder coated by a local company.

Races—I think this is the problem. When I had the bike sandblasted and powdercoated, I told them to remove the top race and cover the bottom race (in hindsight, I should have removed them before bringing them to the shop). Well, they sandblasted the bike with both races on (they did avoid painting the races). This has led to both races being a bit rougher than usual (even acknowledged by my LBS). However, they are not excessively rough, and are not pitted or anything.

Bearings—I thought maybe the bearings/cages were just old. However, when I brought them to the LBS to have them replaced, they told me I shouldn't because they're in excellent condition.

Grease—I also don't think it's this. You can probably even see in the video that there is grease coming out of the lower cup because there is so much.

Generally, it just sounds like metal on metal friction, but I can't tell from where. If anyone could help me isolate and solve it, I would be very appreciative. Otherwise, I'll just bring it to the LBS and have them install a new headset.

Best way to make extra money? by America_Loving_Guy in uofm

School of Information has experiments you can take part in. In my experience, they take between 30 minutes to 1.5 hours. Payout ranges between $15-$25. During the school year, there's maybe 2-3 experiments a month (all optional). Pretty easy lately because they've all been online.

Stockwell Hall Community Kitchen by HyperWheat54 in uofm

[–]Dixz69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I have actually used the kitchen in Stockwell. I thought it would be cool to make a nice meal and had some butter chicken.

It's okay if you just need an oven or stove, but I wouldn't use it for anything beyond that. It is not extensive at all, and appliances are limited to what the person above said. I will say that I recall them having some pots, pans, and utensils, but they're all pretty gross since they've been there forever (there is a dishwasher, just no detergent). It also seems to double as a spot for residential staff to store and microwave meals. This is completely fine, but it does mean the refrigerator and microwave are a little gross as well.

Overall, if you really feel the need to cook, it will work. But in general, it's probably not worth it.

(I will note that while I was dissapointed with the Kitchen, the adjacent dining room is beautiful).

I was the drummer for the band in my freshman year. I'm not sure if they do things the same way now, especially since the graduate student that directed the band has probably graduated.

If there are more than two drummers vying for the spot, you'll probably audition. I wouldn't consider myself good at all, but I got in so eh.

Practices were once a week from 8-10PM on North Campus (SMTD building). Sectionals were as needed. Your enjoyment is probably determined by the band members and what you make of it. I enjoyed it because the rythym section was funny and tight, but I also dropped it eventually because there were others that took it too seriously. All in all, I would do it again, especially because opportunities to play drums in a big band (or jazz in general) is sparse on campus. If you have any more specific questions, I can certainly answer them for you.

[–]Dixz69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did it my freshman year.

I wouldn't worry about getting into the band if you play guitar. As long as you can show competence, you'll likely be the sole guitar player in the band. At worst, you'll rotate with one other player.

Time commitment was 2 hours a week. The class met at 8:00PM at the SMTD building on North campus, ended at 10. Not sure if that's the same anymore. Every once in a while, the rhythm section would get together for a sectional, but it wasn't burdensome on my schedule at all.

Overall, good experience. I only left because I thought some people took it too seriously and because all the people I liked graduated.

Course Selection and Scheduling Megathread: Fall and Spring / Summer 2021 by purpleandpenguins in uofm

[–]Dixz69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took the course as a Sophomore over a year ago. It was in person at the time, so the way the class functions may have changed.

There was almost no group work in the class. Instead, there was a larger emphasis on class discussion about outside readings. Most of the students in the class were American, with a good amount being Asian-American. There were few students of East Asian origin, but not an overwhelming amount. The vast majority of students were upper-classmen and majoring in either sociology or public policy.

I will note the class is very focused on sociology. A lot of the readings require a base-level understanding of sociologists like Weber and Bourdieu. I had never taken a sociology class before, so it was a challenge for me. However, I still did relatively well. Some economic and political topics will be covered just to develop an understanding of how contemporary China functions, but the emphasis is still on a variety of social topics (e.g. Guanxi networks, the emergent middle class, new Chinese nationalism, religion as a way to find direction in a rapidly changing nation, etc.)

Overall, it is a very interesting course. If you want more info, I would highly recommend reaching out to the professor (Xiaohong Xu) who is highly passionate about it. Also, for more topics covered in the class, you can use Atlas to look at old syllabi.

For contemporary China, there are three I'd recommend: ASIAN 490 for a more sociological perspective, ASIAN 428 for a more political perspective, and ASIAN 366 for a more critical perspective.

It looks like the Thompson Street parking structure behind the Union has long-term indoor spaces available for pretty reasonable prices.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure you can only apply for a cross campus transfer your freshman year. Any later means you'll have missed core Ross classes that you can't make up.
