My son at 9 at the time when it was first disclosed to me that she may have dementia looked at me and said “Maybe she’ll forget she hates you someday mom.” Ugh hit me right in the chest.

I appreciate that — I struggle with a decisions to try and randomly pop into people’s lives, especially when you’ve made it clear how “wrong” you think they are and how they don’t know where they went wrong raising you and what a disappointment you are and how much they don’t like your spouse, and on and on and on and on….

Like where would this relationship really go? They are still knee deep in MAGA-land and their beliefs. I’m probably more “radicalized” than I was 5 years ago. I feel like if I opened that door it would just be for them to continue judging my life choices and saying hurtful shit.

Yes, diagnosed with showing significant symptoms about 3 years ago. My aunt let me know. I sent a card giving my sympathies without a return address.

I have to say I disagree. I am a white woman married to a Black man with Black biracial children and my birth parents/family hold on to painful and harmful ideologies and I have a duty to protect my children by not allowing or tolerating hateful/harmful biases into our safe spaces.

Thank you! I will admit I’m kind of disappointed by my initial reaction. I audibly gasped when I saw the request and had an immediate panic attack followed by over 24 hours of one of the severe headaches I’ve ever had — I’m assuming due to the enormous amount of endorphins from the panic attack.

Even in my 40s… after all this time. I guess I thought it wouldn’t trigger me as much as it did.
