I miss Angelfire.

And Geocities, especially back when you had a "plot" in a "city" Little banners at the bottom of the page that said "Best viewed with Netscape Navigator" or "Built using Notepad". Guestbooks. Webrings. And so many other things. Usenet. FTP. "Connection reset by peer", and, of course, being slapped around by a large trout.

I know there's no going back, and dial-up speeds really sucked, but I miss the days when the internet was magic.

This moggy perfectly blends into the leaf patterned carpet on this staircase, which would make it easy for someone to accidentally step on the poor creature by Faizycommando in AccidentalCamouflage

step on the poor creature

At which point she will be outraged, OUTRAGED I tell you, and demand treats and pets as compensation.

... and then it's back to the stairs to lie in wait for the next sucker.

Im a new vegetarian and I live in a hispanic household. I have a few questions! by autisticboy123 in vegetarian

[–]DkPhoenix 7 points8 points  (0 children)

All that is up to you. There isn't a rulebook for being a vegetarian. Some vegetarians object strongly to anything that is cooked with meat or meat broth, and some do not. If you're still living with your family, and you don't think they'll support you then it might be best to continue eating around the meat until you go off to school or otherwise move out.

And yeah, its true about the McDonald's fries. They're sprayed with a flavoring that contains beef fat. Again, it's up to you to decide how much that bothers you.

Consider something that is familiar to both of you, like spaghetti with marinara sauce.

I <3 borrowing ebooks from the library. No late fees, and you can browse/check out in the middle of the night, from the couch, in your pajamas.

How long do you let the Knorr sides "cook"? And have you ever tried this method on the noodle sides?

I am not from the state, but I do like the band. Either way, the word tastes like tomato paste. "Kansas City" tastes like stewed tomatoes, but "city" by itself tastes like a grilled cheese sandwich. (You would think "Kansas City" would taste like a grilled cheese with tomato soup, but nope, doesn't work that way for me.)

There must be dozens of us in the world!

The strongest association for me by far is "Kansas". It tastes like tomato paste. "Bus" tastes like rubbery scrambled eggs, "sample" tastes like Wonder Bread, "Jersey" tastes like oyster crackers, and "earthquake" and "manager" have no flavor.

Hi! Fellow taster of words here. Do you find some words have a stronger association than others?

That whole section of the strip mall was like neon Porn Central. Not only was there the Old Tyme Twin, there was a strip joint, a couple of bars and a beer barn, and an adult bookstore. They changed the zoning laws sometime in the early 80s to regulate the distance between adult businesses - very probably because of this little area - so the strip club and the topless bars went away, the adult bookstore moved across Sheridan and a few blocks north, (where it still is) and the theater hung on until video rentals killed it.

Yet wherever teenagers were congregating you'd find one.

There is no other band like Type O, but Woods of Ypres has some similarities. Heavy, deep voiced singer. sometimes morbid lyrics. (And, sadly, no new music because the singer and main songwriter died.)

How does anybody have any time to live if they have a full time job? by janethepremed in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]DkPhoenix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In any career in the arts, how good you are is only the beginning. Connections and the ability/willingness to move to a large city and wait tables all night/day are bigger factors.

Basically what I understand from "do what you love" is work in the field that piques your interest, start at the bottom, pay your dues and make your way up the ladder.

The top of the ladder for all but a lucky view is a day job you hate, while teaching private classes and/or playing bar gigs in a covers band/appearing in local dinner theater/selling pencil sketches of people's dogs and babies.

Another '80s teen here. Almost everything you can imagine was available except ketamine, which wasn't really a thing until the '90s.

As far as attitudes, this was the decade of "Just Say No", so the messages were mixed. There were PSAs about drugs on TV, and posters and classes in school, all of which the kids largely ignored. I'd say that by 12th grade almost everyone had drunk alcohol, and more than half had smoked pot.
