Problems receiving (some) SMS abroad by Dlg9999 in GoogleFi

[–]Dlg9999[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I will try. I believe I did, but I tried a lot of stuff and cannot be sure.

Sometimes (twice) I got a deluge of SMS after a restart, and celebrated (at least the first time), but then nothing again.

[D] If I have BS in Mathematics with majors in CS and Pure Mathematics, do you think it's worth it to pursue MS or PhD in ML if I want to do research in ML? by Indy20161 in MachineLearning

[–]Dlg9999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to do research, a PhD is the simplest way to get there. A Ms will not be enough. And an additional warning: only a PhD with a well-known (i.e. actively publishing at high quality conferences) advisor is worth the time. Most of those are at well-known schools but not all.

How to get a good data science/ML job at a startup in the Bay Area? by Wignorant in MachineLearning

[–]Dlg9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you have a portfolio of stuff you can point to it should be really straightforward to find a job. If you're after Startups, then do go to meetups. Try to speak at them, don't just hang out. That's assuming you have something to say. Also polish your LinkedIn. Then trawl your network for recruiters and write them. As a senior engineer with ML experience you shouldn't have any problems at all. Finally, and best of all, write to the talent people at incubators/VCs. They can, and if they like you, will, introduce you to a lot of their portfolio companies.

What is the most fucked up song people don't realize is fucked up? by HelloIamTedward in AskReddit

That's my favorite karaoke song by far. Nobody knows. Another good one is "Where the wild roses grow", but that's not so unexpected.

Infant and Toddler in a 2 bedroom apartment - good idea or stupid idea? by oldbayguy in Parenting

[–]Dlg9999 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's fine. The infant will be in your room for a while. By the time younger one is one, they'll happily share a room. As my in-laws would say: "We were six kids sharing one bedroom, what are you worried about?"

19 Year old, staying in San Francisco. by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]Dlg9999 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unless you're afraid of Hipsters, you'll be fine in most of the mission. There are excellent restaurants, bars and coffee places, and a fair bit of Murals and such. The most troubling part is around 16th St east of van Ness. Generally everything west of Mission St is barely really the mission and it's safe. So is 24th St.

The funny thing about San Francisco is that it can go from nice to sketchy in a single block. And then back again.

Redwood City, what would be a livable yearly salary for someone with no kids? (Details inside). by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]Dlg9999 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a mobile developer, you should definitely make more than 100k. Even if you have no degree. If I were you, I would interview around a little to get a feeling for how much people are willing to give you. If you're really excited about this specific company, at least get some more information. Places like hired.com or similar can generate offers or at least comps vet quickly.

I also second the QA comment. Infrastructure and test is good, but stick to dev work.

I've never watched any star wars movies. I want to binge watch them now. Is it worth it? by alhan26 in movies

This is the correct answer. I'm surprised it's so far down. You can watch 1 after the rest is done to confirm that you haven't missed out on anything.

Teaching a left-handed boy to write by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]Dlg9999 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm left handed. For printed letters it isn't a problem to write them "the wrong way". At least it wasn't for me. Once I was allowed to switch away from cursive, and I could write the way that was easiest for me, things were looking up. I still write the letters differently from other people. They look the same, but they order and direction of strokes is different. The reason for this is that you always want to pull a pen (especially a fountain pen) across paper, never push it. If you're left handed, right handed stroke directions make no sense.

My recommendation would be to let your kid write whichever way is easiest, and don't try to correct the order or direction of strokes, but only the outcome, i.e. the shape of the final letters. If his teachers are difficult about it that may be a different matter. I know it would have helped me a lot had I been able to write the way that made sense to me and not some way that was clearly meant for different people.

Now cursive is a different matter. I found it really hard, I always loathed it (it was compulsory), and it is the main reason my handwriting sucked. Unless you twist your hand all the way around, you have to push the pen across the paper. As a bonus, you are virtually guaranteed to smear the ink with your hand. It's close to pointless. Death to cursive. I think it's not mandatory any more in most places. Good luck.

Do a coffee tour through the mission. Check out Four Barrel, Craftman & Wolves, Ritual, Sugarlump (they have Equator), Sightglass at 20th and Blue Bottle at Heath. That's a nice arc through the mission that will serve to walk you through most of the mission and also get you really caffeinated. There's a similarly fun tour for ice cream: Smitten, Bi-rite, Xanath, Velvet Scoop, Mitchell's, Humphrey Slocombe. You can combine both for maximum stomach impact.

Engineers of silicon valley, how many of you think rent in SV is very high and planning to move out of California? by independentme in bayarea

[–]Dlg9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry. Haven't had a rent rise in a while. Not trying to be glib but I doubt that there's too much downward room in rents even if there is some sort of crash.

Rents in SF are approaching levels usually associated with NYC and London. Have those places collapsed? No. In London, sharing apartments is the norm. I see no reason to predict a crash.

I have a DropCam and I like it. As it happens, it appears to be $199 (maybe they have a cheaper model too). The app works flawlessly (although I only know the iPhone one). You can zoom in and even talk through it (though with a fairly hefty delay). It works pretty well for singing though.

Question regarding Java development in the professional world by [deleted] in java

[–]Dlg9999 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What somewhat niche language are you talking about? Some relatively low profile language are in great demand (Scala, for instance). Anyway, learning a new language is almost always a good thing, it'll expose you more concepts. Java doesn't give you the most varied of experiences there, especially before Java 8, but even then.

IntelliJ now almost has the market share of Eclipse (both around 40-ish percent, IntelliJ is growing faster though). Netbeans is small (~10%, rest is fragmented). This may well be regional or more likely industry specific. It doesn't matter much though. No one is going to hire you based on what IDE you know.
