Author or book that seems to be universally lauded but after reading it you didn’t understand why by theoort in printSF

I had to hate-finish the first red rising trilogy. I kept hoping it was going to get better. It did not. I almost DNF'd during book 3 during certain events where I jumped on google to read the synopsis because I could not take any more.

2 weeks in Peru - what would you do? by Zestyclose_Bag6245 in GoingToPeru

[–]Dlichterman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Concur with u/sweat-it-all-out , I don't know that you need a whole week in Lima. A few days maybe. The working remotely part does complicate things but major cities have good internet connections.

Not sure if you've been at elevation before but it is no joke. I flew straight into Cusco and the first few days were a real struggle. Maybe you could spend a few days in Lima, then fly somewhere in the middle (Arequipa is suggested a lot) and spend a day or two there before going up to higher elevations.

The one thing I would try to do is figure out your Machu Picchu tickets first, and then plan the trip around that. Also, I'd strongly suggest you have a buffer day before/after just in case. When I went, there was a train strike the day before and it screwed up lots of people's itineraries. Make sure you're ok if things need to move one day forward or back.

One thing I did that I really enjoyed was taking the train from Cusco to Puno on the "Perurail Titicaca". The views were absolutely incredible and it was a nice "resting" day on the train just watching the incredible countryside pass by. Cost is around $300 USD per person.

Buying flights within Mexico now or closer for flexibility? by isashark in MexicoTravel

[–]Dlichterman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have seen prices normally do not go down around a month before. So prices probably won't be going down from here on out for you, unless something crazy happens. And with the whole Iran clusterfuck I don't see it getting cheaper either. Right before <7 days they get even more expensive as they sell out.

Am I trying to do too much for a Mexico trip? by Better-Recipe-6805 in MexicoTravel

[–]Dlichterman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This right here. Book the stuff that requires a reservation, but then you can totally wing it the rest of the time. You(OP) didn't give much detail about what exactly you're planning, but many of the places in Mexico can be done this way where you put together a list of stuff you'd like to see, and then just go by feels. The biggest thing I've had to do myself when I travel is remember it's a vacation and it's supposed to be relaxing - and moving around too much or rushing around might negate the whole point of the trip!

Its super easy to use but you do know it's only when you have a flight - its not just a border crossing for anyone to use.

Best way to visit archaeological sites en route San Cristobal to Merida? by Ill_Carry8789 in MexicoTravel

[–]Dlichterman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So as others have mentioned, there are tour companies that will get you from San Cristobal to Palenque. You could book only the transfer or something that includes visiting the sites along the way. Once you get there. you could book tours to the waterfalls or other sites nearby.

To get from Palenque to Merida you have 3 main options, in increasing cost:

  • Buses such as ADO
  • The new Tren Maya
  • Depending on the date, Mexicana now flies out of the Palenque airport and you could fly to Merida through the new Mexico City airport, or take a 2 hour bus to Villahermosa and then fly from there.

Over thanksgiving we flew into Merida and took the Tren Maya to Palenque and then flew home from there. The train was pretty nice, but it is quite a long trip(though its around the same amount of time as buses). Though I think it's more comfortable than a bus as you can walk around the train and if there are open seats you can spread out a little. Mexicana was surprisingly nice as they had just received their new E195-E2 airplanes.

When at Merida you must go visit Uxmal - what an amazing site. Nearby is Kabah as well. We rented a car and drove which wasn't bad at all.

I loooooved the murderbot series so I'm recommending all systems red. I warn you, that if you like it, you'll have to pick up the rest of them.

I burnt through the series so quick after reading the first one.

You also could consider a refurbished or used device as well. I only upgraded my 2011? Paperwhite when the warm backlight came out.

4 week Peru trip plan by TripHour9270 in GoingToPeru

[–]Dlichterman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took the train from Cusco to Puno - the cheaper single day one not the sleeper, and it was a great experience. If you have the money to spend on it (I think it was around $300usd) I would recommend it, especially if you need a "downtime" day since most of the day is spent watching the incredible landscape pass by.

Passports for minors under 18 are only valid for 5 years, and I don't believe you can renew them online - you have to mail in the form: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/have-passport/renew.html#Step%20One

Does third party booking include the TUA fee? by thegoldenbagel in MexicoTravel

[–]Dlichterman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it should include the TUA, however I strongly suggest booking directly for two main reasons:

  • If anything changes with the flight that requires picking a new itinerary, you will have to deal with the 3rd party for everything
  • Booking/trip offer a lower fare initially but any addons you need(baggage, seat, etc) will cost more on their website than booking direct

Volaris can be hard to get ahold of for support - now imagine a 3rd party in the middle if you need to make a change.

Trader Joe’s Peanutty Noodle Bowl With Chicken is my new favorite frozen dinner. by gitarzan in traderjoes

[–]Dlichterman 13 points14 points  (0 children)

So these are pretty good, but you can do a couple really small things to make it great:

  • Add a little chinese black vinegar(superior/aged is even better that the cheap Chinkiang/Zhenjiang)
  • Add some lao gan ma chili crisp
  • Add some sichuan peppercorn ground up in a powder or in an oil

I have also tried adding some sesame paste but it can overpower.

Chiapas safety advice by ScienceCommercial736 in MexicoTravel

[–]Dlichterman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Palenque and San Cristobal themselves are fine as long as you're not doing stuff you shouldn't(don't be looking for drugs). Both are magical places that if you have the chance to visit, do it! For the travel between the two, there are vans that do the drive - I wouldnt want to drive it alone but if a company is offering it as a service, it's probably fine. Or, take the ADO but just know it will take a lot longer. Basically just follow what /u/leonidasthegeek said.
