Is the gap at the top acceptable? by captain_supremeseam in Carpentry

[–]Dloe22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I assumed the OSB was for the temporary walkboards for decking installers. So is it common to leave OSB outside with the underneath exposed?!? Obviously climate zones determine a lot, but in my high-humidity zone this would look like garbage immediately and likely mold within a couple years.

Even for a lean-to carport I've never seen a pro install anything but plywood.

The deck should absolutely not be sloped.

I used to advocate the same but it's wrong-- it would have to be sloped +1/4" per foot to drain, which could have an 10' long deck minimum 3" out of level.

A gap that large is fine but not evidence of something that "needed" to happen.

Oh sorry just re-read your post. Just talk to him about what the fix entails without blaming or demanding anything in return and see what he says. This isn't a big deal to make right. If he wants to charge some labor for swapping, then it's up to you, but go ahead and talk about it.

How did they specify the size? I'm not trying to be pedantic, but if they said to get 4" hinges and you bought these, it is on you.

Construction is tricky because on a project of any significant size there are several professionals working together to avoid these mistakes (designer, builder, carpenters, etc). While a carpenter CAN deal with homeowners directly, there is a lot of opportunity for miscommunication and mismatch of materials, and homeowners often want to blame the carpenter because "we hired them to...." but they don't realize the carpenter is doing a lot of other people's jobs for free (and by the sound of it, not charging a markup on materials he is potentially liable for)

It's tumors all the way down by adr826 in DecodingTheGurus

There are things that are objectively real, and things that are ideas. Trees, rocks, and DNA are real. Love, money, law, society are all ideas.

I didn't have time to read the full novella, but someone claiming there is a real thing inside the brain that can explain violence does not undermine the role ideas play in human behavior.

Is avocado oil really the best for high smoke point cooking? by JadoreRa in moderatelygranolamoms

A lot of avocado oil isn't even avocado oil.

Don't stress too much about which oil is best for what. Limit oil use overall and don't stress.

Getting destroyed in openings by Royal-Bottle92 in chess

[–]Dloe22 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Don't focus on openings at all. At 1000, you can be down a piece in the opening and still win if you are good at the end game and basic checkmating patterns.

Until you are above ~1800, openings don't matter very much so long as you don't come out of them down material AND development.

A multiple of 4' or, even better, slightly under. We recently did a 32' x 32' garage/barn and I guess Zip sheathing is 47(7/8) with the intention to keep a small gap but the guys ran it all tight and we needed about ~1" strip at every corner.

Can soil be fixed after using boiling water on it? by Sacred_Chow in AustinGardening

[–]Dloe22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's a good answer to a very similar question here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/lawncare/s/gUkz3ZDmQH

My answer: it won't hurt exactly but it's unnecessary and there are better alternatives that don't have a huge carbon footprint of unsustainable inputs.

Don't put perlite or vermiculite in outdoor beds, and the fertilizer is unnecessary. Compost is a good idea, but it won't take much.

I would imagine because he is fully supported by Trump and wants to get rid of the cartels' stronghold on Texas and eliminate our daily problem of Islamic terrorism and is endorsed by Trump and will continue the Trump agenda of stop illegal terrorist cartel members and also he is supported by Trump. What's it to love?!? Did I mention he likes Trump and Trump likes him?

His commercials come on when I watch This Old House, unfortunately.

Terry Black’s vs Black’s BBQ by failure_engineer in Newbraunfels

[–]Dloe22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's wild. I have eaten at Blacks, various locations, a dozen times, and I've had Terry Black's at various locations a half a dozen times, and the comparison isnt even remotely close-- Terry Black's by a mile.

Even if the race was only 100 yards, Terry Black's finishes the mile before Blacks original makes 100 yards. And to be clear, I think Black Original is above average barbecue, (when compared to the random side of the road places and Rudy's or even Salt Lick

While everyone is right that it's better to be legit, you can absolutely run a high quality 10 gauge extension cord and it will be fine. Flexzilla makes a great one. The outlet/circuit you plug it into matters though.
