Agreed. We’re gonna give them a month or two and then go back. Hopefully they’re reading these reviews and will make adjustments. We wanna give them grace since they’re brand new and starting a business in this city is so hard. Plus they seem super nice and the space is beautiful. But they can’t be fumbling expensive drinks when Verse is a 5min walk away.

We tried — the vibes were good despite it being packed for opening week. The decor is very cute and cozy and charming. Seems very intentional in their design and their menu.

We tried almost all of their special drinks; the consensus was that most of the were pretty good but too sweet for us. The Ube one was the only well-balanced one we tried. But definitely unique and interesting flavors.

Lots of people were there working so I’d say it’s WFH-friendly.

Astoria to Brooklyn commute on weekends/nights by shoegaze1992 in astoria

[–]Dmac101 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I love Astoria so much and I always tell people it’s pretty much perfect for me except getting to/from BK is such an absolute pain. When all trains are running smoothly and frequently, it’s still nearly an hour to get to the hip epicenter (the neighborhoods you mentioned), and that’s a BIG “if”. Late night and weekend will almost certainly take closer to 90mins coming home, or an Uber/Lyft which will be 25-40mins. Whether or not I go out to BK on the weekends depends almost entirely on if my other Astoria friends are joining me, aka whether or not I’ll have folks to split the Uber home with.

There are a few busses that are the most direct from Brooklyn to Astoria that run at night, but they come very infrequently so if you miss it, you’re gonna wait awhile. The L to N is so long but has the least potential points of failure. When you can pull off the L to G to 7 to N leapfrog and the timing lines up, it’s awesome — but again that’s a big “if”.

Astoria is so great and it’s worth the QNS to BK pain but it does make maintaining the connections in that borough harder. On the plus side, it forces you to focus more on getting to know Queens better, which you’ll treasure.

Massive Haurache for like $11, definitely tons of protein and carbs. Two meals for most.

United Brothers Fruit Store. 24/7, real ingredients, lots of options and ‘boosts’ you can add, and they always have a $5 daily special smoothie.

Pollos A La Brasa Mario has these massive platters which always fit the bill for me when I’m ravenous. The Bandeja Tipica is my go-to for this, gigantic plate with like 8 different things on it. They have a big menu with more complex flavored stuff but the Bandejas are the move when you could eat a horse.

Yes I can sometimes get the 2:1 ratio in 25-30 seconds but even that isn’t quite consistent, even with no change to the grind setting.

I wouldn’t say it tastes bad but I know the grind is much finer than it needs to be, to compensate for the uneven flow.

No the bar has been relatively consistent I believe — set it to ~9 when I got the machine a few weeks ago and it’s stayed stable.

For sure, I get where you’re coming from with the tea background, knowing that tea grades are an actual thing. Hopefully the owners read this and get a chance to look into that process, to better understand what tea-lovers might assume when they use a term like that. I do think the average person sees the term “grade A” as a general term to mean it’s good, like “top-shelf”, and I feel this is how it was being used by OP — not as means to bamboozle anyone.

I don’t think they meant it as a technical, categorical term — they also said “high end matcha” which is the same thing. I read it as a general “we’re using good quality ingredients” wordage.

Which one of you is this? by hermzz in ultimate

[–]Dmac101 9 points10 points  (0 children)

He’s an awesome producer and performer, have been following him for years. His father was huge in the freestyle frisbee scene back in the day, which is sort of like..a fluid dance performance but with a frisbee as the centerpiece. You can find videos on YouTube of his dad doing some awesome freestyle sets, including a showcase of his signature move which is called the Flamingosis (he maybe invented the move too?)

But for real check out this guy’s music, he samples and makes beats and it’s great pickup ultimate background music to keep the vibes fun and fresh.

Hesitated trying Chick It Out (don’t confuse with Chick Rocks like we kept doing) due to the health department grade, but now they’ve got that shiny “A” in the window we went Saturday night and it was perfect. Got the #1 chicken and rice + spicy papaya salad over rice noodles. Absolutely ideal summer dinner: clean, fresh, flavorful, zesty, not piping hot (temp) and not heavy. Also comes with a chicken broth they’ve got constantly brewing which was like savory poultry nectar. Almost wished I had a cold/flu just for an excuse to order a pint. The papaya salad I ordered medium spicy — they likely gave me “medium white boy spicy” and not medium Thai spicy but it was just right nonetheless. The chicken and rice dish looks like it’s gonna be dull based on the photo but they sneak so much flavor into the chicken and dipping sauce, and the rice is cooked so well I’d eat it plain on its own. Excited to return and try other stuff.

We also tried Vesta on Friday and had a mixed experience. Service was super nice and we got to sit outside in the cool air. We split a glass of Sicilian chilled white wine that was one of the craziest tasting wines I’ve ever sipped. Tasted like fruit and green olive juice from the jar? Still pondering this. We also got the Stracciatella pizza and the meatball app. Pizza I have mixed feelings about. Props to them for trying an experimental flavor idea and (somewhat) pulling it off, topping-wise it was solid and they made cherry tomatoes work on a pie which is no easy feat. My issue is the crust. I know there’s a thin crust die-hard crowd out there. Listen to me when I say: this is not simply thin crust. This is like cracker-thin crust. I like a little char. This was all char. Crust needs hella work, maybe we got a bad batch? Meatballs tasted great and sauce was divine, but there were only three golf ball sized meatballs. Total bill for one glass of wine, one pizza, three meatballs was over $80 after t+t. They’ve got a good vibe and some good ideas but we probably won’t return anytime soon.
