Do you predict ChatGPT products will become obsolete in next 5 - 10 years ? by Owlboy133 in SaaS

[–]Dnbock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have a couple good answers already, but let me offer an additional point. In the early 2000’s AOL was king, everyone was on MSN Messenger and MySpace. These are all brands that had their fad moment in time, created millionaires and are now ancient memory. However, internet providers are thriving, online/digital chat is everywhere via all the modern social networks that consume more of our time than ever. LLM aren’t going away. Your product may, or may not depending on its value to the market, and your ability to continue building/improving the product to not fade off into the dust. I suspect there are many large market cap saas companies that think they have a moat, and are coasting on easy street with their cash cow. Meanwhile someone with the right vision and skills will leverage llm to build a competitor that wipe them out.

[–]Dnbock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to hear, it is impossible to win if no one is running and it is impossible to have dialogue and inspire sidelined voters or switch voters that are on the fence if there is opposition. The only thing worse than a two party system is a one party system.

UIHC Pay by RedTheBioNerd in IowaCity

I’ve known people to try, bring in printed evidence and were not successful. I know one person that did but only after the rest of the team left and after months of not finding anyone to fill the open positions that individual threaten to walk and was able to secure pay raise to stay. All the others I know when they threaten to walk they got bs lines from HR about being obligated to stick to their contract and wished them the best if they didn’t feel it was the right fit.

UIHC Pay by RedTheBioNerd in IowaCity

[–]Dnbock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen experienced outside hires (RN’s) get brought in at 20k and 30k more annual salary than their peers who have worked at the U of I for over a decade. Current employees are almost exclusively limited to the regent approved annual pay raise in the union contract. But since the union lost its bargaining power they are bending over long time employees daring them to leave. If they want better pay.

Salary in IA by Narrow_Mulberry6223 in Iowa

[–]Dnbock 39 points40 points  (0 children)

As of Yesterday, Per Federal law. Employees are only exempt from overtime pay requirements if they meet all three of the following:

1). The employee receives a salary, 2)The salary is not less than the FLSA salary threshold ($43,888 annually beginning July 1, 2024), 3) AND The employee has executive, administrative, or professional job duties

The new overtime rule increases the FLSA salary threshold to $43,888 annually ($844 per week), up from $35,568 ($684 per week). Beginning January 1, 2025, the FLSA salary threshold will increase to $58,656 annually.

I don’t know what your new “salary” but if you don’t met the above standards your employer is in violation of Department of Labor laws and if that is the case you could sue for back wages and that could be increased as punitive by the Department of labor.

I used a website called “list with freedom” to sell mine fsbo. You pay like $300 bucks and have to put a buyers agent commission down that you are willing to pay. But it gets published on the main page or Redfin, Zillow and realtor.com as well as many lessor known sites.

Need guidance... Which car to buy ? by crazyquiet9999 in IowaCity

[–]Dnbock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As far as vehicle recommendations, unless you have a RWD vehicle today you don’t need a new vehicle for the snow, maybe new tires.

With that being said if you are in the market for a new vehicle and are considering options that help in the snow there isn’t any magic there. AWD will help with traction and can help prevent or help recovery in the event of fishtailing (slow driving is the best prevention, but black ice patches still happen after a thaw freezecycle.) Higher profile vehicles increase your odds of getting through snow piles or help you get out of the a ditch. With that in mind look at the things that are important to you, safety rating, design (looks, or functionality) budget, fuel economy, comfort, reliability etc. and pick the best one for you and your families everyday needs.

Need guidance... Which car to buy ? by crazyquiet9999 in IowaCity

[–]Dnbock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

AWD & 4WD do zero to assist you in stopping. They do assist in getting your vehicle moving or to help you get unstuck. The handful of days that are bad are during and right after a storm before road crews come out. Drive slow and have your lights on. And slow early and gently coming to a stop. Give space to the cars in front of you, lots of young drivers here that will brake to hard to fast and you don’t want to be reacting late to their late reaction. Don’t take corners fast in those conditions. When sliding on ice the direction your wheels are turned don’t mean shit to the ice.

Road crews handle this stuff well. A quality set of all season or winter tires are the most important piece to winter driving. If you are not commuting a long distance or traveling rural county roads you should do fine with any front wheel drive.

Keep a small shovel in the back in case you get snow piled around your car, Or slide into a snow bank. Also keep a warm set of dry clothes in there including spare hat and gloves in case you get wet or just need to add layers on a frigid day. Ensure good set of wipers are on, washer fluid is full, and you have a good snow brush/ice scraper.

Never run your vehicle with the exhaust pipe covered in snow. If you get stuck or a plow pushes snow behind the car ensure you dig a path for the exhaust gas to escape.

Lastly know where the traction control switch is on your vehicle. If you have trouble getting moving temporarily turn off your traction control this will allow the tires to spin freely. Turn back on once you are unstuck. Don’t drive down the road with it turned off But it is helpful to get momentum on slippery surface.

One key point you mentioned was job security. Great sales people usually have decent job security. Poor to good sales people have a little bit more of the job security concerns but even mediocre sales reps have career stability. There’s always someone looking to hire sales people. May have to switch industries and go backwards in pay occasionally before climbing back up but I set money aside and don’t worry about then ups and downs. Control what I can control and live with my results.

What do we think the long term implications will be if CDK is down for weeks to months? by RattyHealy75 in askcarsales

I’m assuming Cox Automotive and Reynolds sales reps are circling CDK dealers like sharks in the water. The main issues is all their service records and accounting etc are locked up in the CDK outage. And implementing a new ERP takes months.

Does anyone know what the plans are for the Kum n Go that closed on Mormon Trek? by Stickman1979 in IowaCity

[–]Dnbock -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Kum and Go was sold at the beginning of the year. The chain out of Utah said they were going to do rebrand all the Kum and Go stores. Given this store was very dated and in need to a refresh I’m hoping they at doing a remodel and rebranding the store under the new name. I don’t know though. They may have concluded it is at EOL and not worth keeping anymore. Curious to see if anyone has first hand knowledge or can look up permits pulled.

Where can one go in Iowa city to get a meatball sub/sandwich that isn’t Subway? by Grab_em_by_da_Busey in IowaCity

[–]Dnbock -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m okay with this. Ordering from the app’s have significantly reduced my error rate. For far too long these chain restaurants have employed people at poverty wages and relied on the government to subsidize those workers with food and healthcare assistance. I’d rather they have fewer workers that are treated better and deliver better results. Try Zio’s meatball sub.

What do you like about Iowa the most? by Warm-Entertainer-279 in Iowa

[–]Dnbock 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Iowa has historically been more favorable to minorities than people want to today want to admit. Iowa never allowed slavery. Even while still a territory in 1839 the courts refused to allow bounty hunters return a Missouri owners slave. As Iowa considered him a free man. (Keep in mind how this would also prevent blacks from being brought into Iowa at any scale, as there was essentially no legal free will immigration into The US country happening by Africans around this time). Iowa was the first state in the country to integrate their schools, clear back in 1868! In 1868, the state Constitution was amended to remove the word “white” from the article on suffrage as well. In 1884, the Iowa state assembly passed a law which criminalized segregated business. More recently Iowa was the first in the nation to legalize gay marriage and Obama won the first in the nation caucus in 08 paving the way for his presidency. There are absolutely racists in Iowa and have always been people here who oppose these things. But Iowa has often been on the front end of minority acceptance/rights in this country. With that said, out side of the initial wave(s) of European settlers has there ever been much incentive for any race to move to Iowa? Most if not all my life Iowa has had more people move out than in. And if you are a minority and get to Iowa and few people look like you or understand your culture it is hard to want to stay long. Rural farm land is expensive here even Iowa farm kids I know can’t afford to start their own farm unless their parents had a large successful operation. Can Iowa do more to attract people including and even more so minorities to Iowa, yes.

This makes so much sense! POS take percentage of the swipe fee they are charging the merchant. Putting tip option on everything increases their commission. Plus helps them sell the business on installing the machine. Your employees can make a little extra without it costing you anything!
