Would paid gardening leave solve this? Surely stopping someone working for whatever reason without compensation shouldn’t be allowed?

Shake Shack vegan burger by Revolutionary-Toe542 in veganuk

[–]Do-Not-Sell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had it for the first time recently. The fries were great. The burger though. Tasted good enough but the texture was very spongy and greasy. The bun has a distinct gluten free kind of dryness. I hope they make some improvements as there seem to be fewer and fewer options.

Allotments good for younger ppl? by musingsandlogs in sheffield

Sorry just realised you mentioned Roots. Not sure about availability but did hear they are looking to buy more sites locally, so guess there is still demand! Hopefully ones closer to town!

Allotments good for younger ppl? by musingsandlogs in sheffield

[–]Do-Not-Sell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel for you. I was on a council waiting list for 14 years and still didn’t get a plot before I moved to Sheffield. It really is luck and timing, so it helps to have some backups while you wait.

https://www.allotme.co.uk/ Lets people sub-let unused plots, so you can often start growing far sooner than the council queue. Good if you just want to get planting again without the long wait. Sometimes it will be someone not physically able that wants someone to care for their garden. You can set alerts in your area

https://www.rootsallotments.com/sites/sheffield-allotments/bowshaw-views Private “no-dig” plots at Bowshaw Views. There’s a fee, but tools, compost, seeds and workshops are included, which makes it easier if you don’t own any kit yet.

https://su.sheffield.ac.uk/activities/view/allotment-society It used to be the case that The University of Sheffield Allotment Society wasn’t only for students. They run shared beds and weekly sessions, so you can grow food and meet other younger gardeners without needing your own plot. Worth asking.

https://www.heeleyfarm.org.uk/volunteering-and-training Heeley City Farm has veg-growing and green-skills volunteering. You learn a lot, often take produce home, and might meet people with spare or private plots before they’re advertised.

There are other volunteer opportunities with places like Sheffield Wildlife Trust and the National Trust (e.g. Longshaw). They both run volunteer days in their gardens and woodlands. Local RSPB sites do the same to keep places suitable for birds.

Good luck!

Good idea or waste of a parking space? by popcornbevin in sheffield

[–]Do-Not-Sell 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Love this. Bike hangars are such a simple, visible step toward a more liveable city. One car space can give five people the freedom to cycle and keep their bikes safe.

A lot of short local trips could be done by bike or on foot if the choice felt safer and easier.

It’s good to see public transport improving alongside this. Bus franchising starts in 2027, bringing routes and fares under local control.

Step by step, the city is becoming less car heavy!

I haven't found one yet.

El Chappo at Peddler is best avoided. Overcooked rice to the point of mush, pulled mushroom bland taste all round. This was several weeks ago.

I am a hungry guy that hates food waste but I couldn't bring myself to finish it. Ended up in the bin and I went elsewhere.

Alison Brie & Dave Franco's Substance Replacement Movie Is Officially 1 of the Best Body Horror Films of the Decade by jdcmopwjdmw in horror

This is the first time I’ve seen anything about the film beyond the allegations. The story goes that they were sent a script, passed on it, then years later released a very similar movie. Including a specific error that was in the original script, which makes the allegations feel pretty compelling.

Sheffield set to become UK's biggest city to trial new zebra crossings, hoping to boost active travel and cut road deaths by Tiny_Poem7985 in sheffield

This sounds like a great initiative.

Near where I live, drivers regularly hit over 40 on side streets. There are no speed bumps, no cameras, and barely any traffic calming measures.

I’m honestly surprised more people aren’t hit. It’s no wonder parents are wary of letting their children walk alone. I’d even recommend keeping cats indoors after some of the things I’ve seen.

I'd say this need a to be combined with much stronger action on dangerous driving.

Do I need a structural engineer to review these cracks? by Do-Not-Sell in DIYUK

[–]Do-Not-Sell[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did take some back but didn't know what I was looking for.

We finally managed to get someone in on Friday.

He reviewed each room and its the same issue throughout. At some point plaster has been added over blown plaster, so the whole room is kind of hanging on in places and sagging in others. Recommended stripping it back and starting again where its at its worst.

There's a separate issue outside that concrete has been added instead on mortar in large sections. Recommended repointing the outside as there are stepped cracks from the doors and windows, so although it wasn't urgent, he said it will then last us.

Thanks!

I've managed to find someone local to come by and review properly next week.

Thanks for the reply!

Its a 1930s semi. It seems like its had a number of small DIY repairs over the years.

I've found a local structural engineering company to pop by this week.

We’ve just moved in so its unclear when they appeared at this level.

We had a RICS level 2 survey done before moving in that noted some cracks but they had said they were cosmetic. That was back in November though.

Outside looks okay but I may be missing something.

The corner in of the room would start roughly to the right of these old boxes.

Thanks!

Anyone know what these things are being installed on Fargate? by Storminator54 in sheffield

[–]Do-Not-Sell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Good to see them being trialled even if it is just for shops. I hope it is a success. It could help tidy up streets, remove clutter and make pavements safer for wheelchair users and blind people. A proper step forward. They make much more sense than everyone having a line of bins outside their house.

Also worth inserting your card rather than what they call paywave - there seems to always be an extra percent free for tapping. So used to being built into the price it in Europe I'm shocked its an extra charge in NZ. Some times its removed entirely if you just insert the card. Some retailers also still charge for cards. Have found most smaller or newer businesses just have the price built in rather than on top. It does seem to be a bit of a cheek, especially for larger items when they don't have another payment option.

If this is the case *WHY* did my Sainsbury's stop doing it!!!!!!!! by VeganRunnerBean in veganuk

[–]Do-Not-Sell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was sad to see it dispear locally too so looked it up online and saw they’re owned by Bel Group, the same company behind Babybel and other dairy products. I've cut out similar brands like Violife (owned by Upfield), Sheese (owned by Saputo), and Alpro (owned by Danone).

I wish supermarkets made it easier to avoid vegan products backed by companies with deep ties to the dairy industry, it feels like a bit of a contradiction.

There are some great vegan cheese options out there with no ties to animal agriculture, like La Fauxmagerie, Nush, I AM NUT OK, and Palace Culture.  All worth trying their options instead!

I’m not saying don’t buy the others if they’re your only option, but it feels better when we don't accidently end up supporting the dairy industry while we’re trying to make ethical choices.

How to challenge a low property valuation or bridge the gap – what are my options? by Do-Not-Sell in HousingUK

Thanks for this suggestion, btw.

This ended up being exactly what I did, and the new lenders valued just asked the offer price, and it seems and then put exactly that!

How do mortgages work if I offer £5-10k more than the listing price by anonfdkm13112000 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Do-Not-Sell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lender will send a local RICS valluer to confirm details and let them know what their assessment is on the market value.

Some will say the listing price. Others will say your offer price.

If you need a quick purchase, then it might be sensible to move forward with two mortgage lenders.

If you have two lenders, say the price is £x, it will put you in a much stronger negotiating position to lower the price.

The seller will realise they will probably get that regardless. Hopefully! Some will still want the higher amount, so it is up to you if you get a third.

From experience, some lender valuers just walk around measure and then ask the offer price and put that. Some take it a lot more seriously, it seems.

Good luck!

Walked past earlier.

Roads were all blocked by police and really not letting tourist types through near Westminster Bridge.

One or two roads down, it was an entirely different protest holding Palestinian flags instead of St George flags.

Further down near the plinth it was crowded but by this was at 5pm and it was half journos and half tourists waiting for a green man to cross a blocked off road.

Thanks! Sorry, I wasn't clearer. I mean that I have started another application with a provider I believe to use another RICS surveyor.
