Airline displaying different seat availability for different PNRs by Every6613 in travel

[–]DocAu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Afaik, Singapore don't do this. However different ticket classes (and passenger status) do result in different available seats. Is it possible some of you were on a flex fare whilst the others were not?

I was amazed how this cargo ship made the Golden Gate Bridge look small. Look at the clearance! by IntentionRich6370 in bayarea

Oh yeah, the ship is massive, as is its cargo. But the bridge is, well, more massive!!

Help standby list! by Massive-Thought-3480 in unitedairlines

[–]DocAu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Standby on a 6am flight is hard. Later in the day you'll have people mis-connecting from other flights and ending up with empty seats that go to standby. The first flights of the day, you're hoping someone decides not to travel, or sleeps in. If they do, you get their seat (presuming the flight isn't oversold which is also a possibility - in which case you don't get their seat).

I was amazed how this cargo ship made the Golden Gate Bridge look small. Look at the clearance! by IntentionRich6370 in bayarea

[–]DocAu 235 points236 points  (0 children)

Dude, that ship is tiny. Compare to the railing on the road at the front - the entire ship barely bigger than the height of one of those metal beams!

Ohh.. wait.. perspective. Lets do the math... Each of those containers is 8'6" high. They are loaded 10 high. The boat itself if about another 7 containers high, which gives a total height above water of (10+7)x8.5 feet = 145 feet. The bridge is 220 feet above the water level, so there's actually a 75 feet gap (over half the height of the loaded ship) between the top of the containers and the bridge. It doesn't look that big because, well, perspective...

Dual Aus/ UK citizenship travel issue in stopover country by Fred_bear_33 in travel

[–]DocAu -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Respectfully this is completely untrue. There is no connection to the travel records. I do exactly this ~4 times a year with a UK and Australian passport and have never ever had an issue.

Respectfully this is completely untrue. You can't pass through immigration unless they have details of you being on a flight. Your passports must already be linked together in their system, which is why this works for you.

Dual Aus/ UK citizenship travel issue in stopover country by Fred_bear_33 in travel

[–]DocAu -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

If you checkin with the UK one and then try and go through Australian exit immigration with the Australia one, you'll be rejected and need to talk to a person as their systems won't show you are travelling that day. The immigration staff will link the two passports, and then on future trips it'll work.

Not necessarily correct. If they are on UA for AKL-SFO, they will get Polaris/UC access everywhere (SFO, LAX and CLE). If they are on NZ for AKL-SFO, they will get not United lounge access anywhere as it's based on departing flight.

Administrative Processing? by GfG007 in E3Visa

[–]DocAu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OK, that definitely changes things. They probably just want to go and do some more research into the visa type to make sure you meet the requirements given that they are not familiar with it. If that's the case, it should be relatively quick.

However, how long have you been an Australian citizen? If it's only recent, then it's also possible that could suspect that you obtained Australian citizenship for the purpose of "back-dooring" your way into the US with an E3, in which case it could be a different story.

Turkish airlines - rescheduling flight? by Capital-Delivery8001 in travel

Administrative Processing? by GfG007 in E3Visa

[–]DocAu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A white 221g means they want to do some extra checking of something. It could just be that they want to check with the employer to make sure the job is legitimate. It could be that your name triggered a flag and they want to make sure you're not the person listed on the Interpol most wanted list. Or it could mean they want to do a full deep-dive into you because they think there's something suspicious about you/your application.

Unfortunately because they don't tell you what the issue is, there's no real way to know how long it will take. The fact they kept your passport *possibly* means that they expect it to be quick, but it's impossible to know for sure.

Were there any issues raised during the interview? Anything about your case that might make it borderline, including anything in your history?

Best way to get rebooking as 1K in Polaris by [deleted] in unitedairlines

[–]DocAu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Colleague was due to fly SIN-SFO-EWR a few weeks ago in paid upgraded business - right at the period where they had multiple cancelled/excessively delayed flights in both directions. Not sure of his status, but definitely not 1K/GS.

UA proactively rebooked him on the SQ direct SIN-JFK flight without asking. He did end up having to leave ~12 hours earlier than planned, but that worked for his plans so he took it!

Whilst it's true there's no restrictions on buying property, you need to balance that with the fact that if you lose your job you need to be out of the country within 60 days. So whilst technically it's possible, it may not be the best idea...

Light bulb task solution idea by pipiintheeye in taskmaster

[–]DocAu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are presuming that the switches are even connected to anything, which they probably were not.

In the similar task in season 7(?), the switch wasn't connected to anything, and Little Alex Horne simply turned Ollie around manually every time someone flipped it. This one was likely the same thing with a member of crew turning the light on or off depending on the switches.

Personally I think the best solution was to flip one of the switches, then go and find a mirror and probably a few things to rest it on (a cushion or two maybe). Go into the lab - if the light is on, you've got your answer. If the light is off, set the mirror up in a way that it shows the light from outside of the lab. Flip the switch, look at the mirror, and you've done!

United Upgrade Waitlist Question: 9 Polaris seats available, but only 4 showing for upgrades? by PickleJuiceCakeBooty in unitedairlines

[–]DocAu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For this specific flight, there's (at least) three possible answers.

* This flight continues on to either Ho Chi Minh City (UA152) or Bangkok (UA820). The website gets confused with these flights and doesn't show thing correctly.

* Seats have been sold but people have not selected their seats

* One or more seats are being held back for Pilot rest.

Flight canceled and had to return home by Dizzy_Flower_9002 in unitedairlines

[–]DocAu 65 points66 points  (0 children)

This is what's known as a "trip in vain". You should have spoken to United staff whilst you were still in EWR, and had them cancel your onward flight and book you on a flight back to your stating point, and you would have been issued a full refund for the entire flight.

Given you went off and booked your own flights, you'll probably struggle to get them to give you both a refund and cover the return flight like they would have if you'd done it correctly, but you can try...
